It's not redundancy, it's not a backup. It's multiple drives reading and writing and acting as a single drive, the difference is the RAID controller splits the data/threads to make the transfer more performant by "spreading" the load, effectively removing the bottleneck of RPM limitations or SATA bandwidth.
