Phyllodia Phreshness!

Phyllodia awesomeness! Some Sarracenia produce these non carnivorous pitcher growth things called phyllodia – basically just flattened leaf-stalk-looking-thingmabobbers…  S. oreophila, S. flava, S. leucophylla to name a few species, and their hybrids will throw these things up throughout the year. Typically as they approach dormancy.  While trimming thru pitchers, I leave these things on as the plant uses them for photosynthesis during the dark winter months as well as during spring, when the plant jumps into growth.

A quick look at some phyllodia phreshness!

Sarracenia readii x moorei – Select Clone

Earlier this year I got a recent division of S. readii x moorei – select. This was created by Phil Faulisi – and I’m really happy that it threw up some recent late pitchers.  I can’t wait to see the large pitchers it will throw up next year. I’ve seen some established divisions of this plant with impressive pitchers.

S. readii is a rubra/leucophylla hybrid.  S. moorei is a flava/leucophylla hybrid.  The late pitchers on this plant are quite a treat this late in the season, thanks to the S. leucophylla influence which sends up nice pitchers in the fall.  A few other plants in the garden have already been reduced to phyllodia. (Phyllodia are those non carnivorous leaves – they catch sun rays for the photosynthesis action…)

Ahh, I’m going to enjoy this cuz dormancy is right around the corner… 🙂

Phresh Phyllodia

Sup Y’all!

Past couple of days I’ve been hackin’ away at the pitchers. So far, looks good. Most of the plants have been sliced and diced down to their rhizomes.  Dead pitchers have been removed, but some still have some leaves on. Some Sarracenia will produce non carnivorous leaves called phyllodia. Plants like Sarracenia oreophila, flava, leucophylla and their hybrids will have these non carnivorous winter leaves. Phyllodia is used for that all important winter time photosynthesis.

Just a few photos of some phresh phyllodia…
