Sysmex Corporate Lunch Symposium - Innovative diagnostic solutions for cancer patient management during therapy

The workshop will cover a wide range of clinical challenges around cancer patient management that arise during therapy and will showcase how innovative diagnostic solutions can better support both the laboratory and the clinicians. In the first part, Dr. Karine Marchand (CHRU Nancy, France) will introduce CAR-T cell therapy and demonstrate how - with the aid of advance lymphocyte parameters that have been derived from a haematology analyser - the engraftment and expansion of these cells can be monitored and supplement the established flow cytometry procedures. In the second part, Prof. Corinne Frere (Sorbonne university, France) will follow up with the bleeding and thrombotic risk factors associated with CAR-T cell therapy and elaborate on the elevated risk for venous thromboembolism in cancer patients, in order to explain how this risk can be managed to prevent potentially life-threatening thrombotic complications.

Monitoring of circulating CAR-T cells using Sysmex XN-10 research parameters

12:15 - 1:15 PMRoom 150
Scopio Labs Corporate Lunch Symposium - FROM MORPHOLOGY TO MORPHOMETRY: THE POTENTIAL OF QUANTIFYING MORPHOLOGICAL PARAMETERS AT SCALE

Traditionally, hematologists have relied on their keen eye and expertise to assess blood smears under a microscope, a skill honed through years of practice. With advancements in technology, digitized full-field images of blood smears are now being used for more objective analysis, data sharing, remote workflow, and decision support using artificial intelligence.

Full-Field Matters: Dr. Ben Zion Katz will showcase the evolution from a digital solution based on individual cell images to Full-Field digital cell morphology at the Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center (TASMC) Hematology Lab. He will outline the clinical implications and share compelling results of the impact on the lab's workflow from the multi-institutional TAT study. He will also share recent developments in AI-DSS for red blood cell morphology, highlighting the clinical significance of analyzing more than 10,000 RBCs per sample, as well as the impact of automated platelet clump detection on faster, more accurate decision-making in cases where accurate platelet information is vital.

From morphology to morphometry: What's next? Dr. Katz will present the novel concept of "morphometry", the groundbreaking ability to quantify morphological parameters at scale using Full-Field technology and AI. He will share the results from recent MDS and CAR-T cell therapy morphology research performed at TASMC, illustrating how accurate measurement of the morphological parameters could enhance diagnostic precision and yield new, morphology-based biomarkers.

Mindray Corporate Lunch Symposium - Advancing PLT Solutions with AI and Morphology: Bridging Innovation, Accuracy, Efficiency, and Accessibility

This workshop will showcase the latest advancements in PLT counting solutions, emphasizing the role of innovative technologies in enhancing accuracy, efficiency, and accessibility. Dr. Marie Bene will compare the performance of various PLT counting technologies to highlight their roles for different clinical settings. She will also delve into the clinical efficacy of a PLT counting workflow that utilizes artificial intelligence (AI) and advanced morphology analysis, detailing how this integration enables automated, precise, and efficient PLT counting. Additionally, Dr. Olga Ciepiela will present an innovative technology designed to make PLT counting more affordable and effective at reducing the influence of PLT interferences. She will discuss the clinical value of this technology in patients with conditions that influence the accuracy of PLT counting. This workshop aims to provide insights into how these technological advancements can enhance patient care by making accurate and efficient diagnostics more accessible.

Cellavision Corporate Lunch Symposium

Platelet clump assessment using the CellaVision Peripheral Blood Application - Do we need manual microscopy?
Janel Alexandre, Laboratoire INOVIE GEN-BIO, Clermont-Ferrand
Skill management in reading blood smears is a major challenge in hematology laboratories. Digital imaging solutions allow digitalization of blood films at smaller clinics while enabling analysis by highly qualified professionals remotely, ensuring quick and expert handling of most situations. However, detecting platelet clumps in blood smears remains a problem, as the images are often deemed insufficient for identifying these conditions. Pseudothrombocytopenia is an in vitro phenomenon caused by several factors such as EDTA-induced platelet agglutination or sampling errors. Detection of it is important as it can lead to falsely reduced platelet counts on automated cell analyzers and non-detection can lead to false diagnosis, unnecessary examinations and treatment of patients. In such cases, the presence of platelet clumps should be confirmed by reviewing peripheral blood smears. This presentation is going to assess the relative frequency of platelet flags on the Sysmex XN analyzer in samples with various platelet counts and the location of platelet clumps on the peripheral blood film using manual microscopy. The talk is also going to highlight the usability of the CellaVision Peripheral Blood Application for the detection of platelet clumps and identify cases where observation of the feathered edge of the smear can be necessary.

Going digital - Implementation of the CellaVision Proficiency Software for a peripheral blood morphology assessment program for geographically distributed hospital sites
David M Conrad, Department of Pathology, Division of Hematopathology, QEII Health Sciences Centre, Halifax Nova Scotia, Canada
Improving and evaluating diagnostic performance is a key requirement for hospital laboratories to improve patient care. This becomes all the more important for complex, centralized care centers with multiple sites at considerable geographic distances. The presentation is going to highlight the challenges associated with implementing and running a competency assessment program at the QEII Health Sciences Centre (QEII-HSC) in Nova Scotia's capital city of Halifax and the benefits of implementing a digital tool for the same purpose. The presentation is going to describe how the CellaVision Proficiency Software increased the quality of peripheral blood morphology assessments in Nova Scotia by simplifying the evaluation of and education on peripheral blood morphology skills. The Lorna Pearce Proficiency Program was implemented at QEII-HSC in 2017 and included 14 hospital sites and 213 medical laboratory technologists. The results of the program achieved during a five-year period and the value of assessing and improving competency will be discussed. The talk will also highlight the benefits of the CellaVision Proficiency Software for educating medical laboratory technologists in uncommon findings in both RBCs and WBCs such as parasites or Auer rods.

Siemens-Healthineers Corporate Lunch Workshop - The perfect match: integrating artificial intelligence to accelerate diagnostic pathways for red blood cell and platelet disorders

Results from hematology analyzers often provoke more questions than answers, relying on the combination of clinical expertise and confirmatory testing to reach a definitive diagnosis. However, as new innovations across digital cell morphology (DCM) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) emerge, the opportunity exists to accelerate diagnostic pathways through greater access to data and insights. Dr. Viviana Di Fabio will present case studies on critical blood disorders to demonstrate how novel integration of hematology results, DCM, and AI into workflows can increase clarity, elevate efficiency, and help streamline clinical decision-making. Is AI the perfect match for hematology? Come see for yourself.
