Although, the history of City Hall Park’s design throughout the time involved many other people.

In Lower Manhattan, City Hall Park occupies a triangular space of 8.8 acres. John McComb and Frances Magnin selected the spot for New City Hall in 1802. 

In 1820, McComb designed an iron fence and lamps for the park’s perimeter and turned it into a formal park. 

In 1842, the southern end of the park was accessorized by the Croton Fountain. But later, the southern side of the park got sold to be used as a post office. Then the fountain was replaced with a design of Jacob Wrey Mould in 1871 and was installed in front of the City Hall. 

In 1939, under Robert Moses, a long-standing preservation battle resulted in the demolition of the Post Office. After that, Gilmore Clarke redesigned the park with a long axial path oriented along this main sightline. 

In 1984, a Croton Fountain’s modern version was added to the southern tip by M. Paul Friedberg. In 1999 the park’s renovation was done following a historicist style. That’s the period when Friedberg’s fountain was removed and a copy of Mould’s fountain was reinstated. 

Also, McComb’s boundary fence was reproduced. After taking all these steps City Hall Park’s new version kind of became the model for other city parks.

But, unfortunately, some unfavorable issues lay there in the park. Protestors seem to be very interested in this park. 

As a result, sometimes this park is not a good place to visit due to the presence of protestors and chaos. 

Bugs and rats and the fact that they do not turn on the lights at dusk are concerns that need to be considered before going there. And lastly, the noticeable presence of homeless people might annoy you at some level.

Brief History 

Located in downtown Manhattan, City Hall park plays a vital role in the civic life of New Yorkers. 

Throughout the years this park has been used as a pasture, a prison, a parade ground, a public execution site, an almshouse, an art museum, and a post office. 

This healthy, green and certainly beautiful park has some enriched history, indeed. The development of its history year by year is surely intriguing. 

17th Century

David Provoost, an officer in the Dutch West India Company, was the first sheriff of Breucklyn (which is now known as Brooklyn). Including parts of New Amsterdam, 35 acres of land was owned by him, where City Hall Park stands today.

18th Century

Having seen many protests, rallies and movements, City Hall Park remains one of the places that attract protestors. In 1765 New Yorkers protested for the Stamp Act 1765 at this park. Later on March 18, 1766, the act was annulled. 

In 1766, the first liberty pole was removed by the sons of liberty. After getting replaced five times a replica now stands near City Hall Park.

In 1776, George Washington read the Declaration of Independence at the commons on 9th July. On 9th November 1783, he further raised the flag in the park. 

19th Century

As the original City Hall was aging and could not meet the requirements well, New York city’s administration decided to give it a new design by finding the best designer to design the new one. After quite a long journey John McComb was given the responsibility of overseeing the construction of City Hall. 

But decades later, In 2003, Joseph-François Mangin got official recognition as the principal designer of the City Hall. The building was completed in 1812. 

Designed in a Federal style, influenced by the French some critics criticized based on its location. While others agreed to like its remote locale and beautiful topography. 

As New York’s cultural distinctiveness was getting enriched by the late 1810s, the first art museum of New York City was built in 1812. Which was the Rotunda. On July 4, 1827, after slavery got abolished in New York City, the celebration for two long days in the park and also a parade.

In 1842, the center of City Hall Park was adorned with the Croton Fountain as a sign of the celebration of the Croton Aqueduct. 

The Tweed Courthouse was built in the northern portion of the City Hall Park. Starting from 1861, its construction ended in 1881. 

Centered around a wonderful fountain, this park is a gold mine of pretty views. Situated in the middle of the city, New York City people dig this huge and nice park.
