A beautifully remote stone circle

Ardgroom is a small village on the Beara Penisula overlooking the Kenmare River estuary. Its name means “two drumlins” in Irish which refers to two gravelly hills deposited by a glacier, Dromárd, and Drombeg. The Ardgroom Stone Circle consists of 11 stones, 9 of which are still standing upright with one alignment stone outside the circle. This circle is unusual because its stones tend to taper toward points. Also in the vicinity are the remains of at least 2 ring forts, as well as a number of standing stones and stone rows. Stone circles were constructed as ritual and ceremonial sites during the Bronze Age and are about 3000 years old.  The views from the circle are ‘pure wild’ with huge mountains, small green hills, crags, the sea, and running streams.
