I actually have 3 paperback books on him (one an autobiography - one with some of his routines and another mirroring the film about him that starred Dustin Hoffman) - none ever read.
I've even got 2 old LPs of him in action - never got round to hearing them ('aint got the audio set up to do that now) -
and yet I'm fascinated with him, his 'ahead of his time' humour, and anti-authoritianism and his 'no sacret cows' attitude.
Hope to find some more audio of his routines.

a mind blowing selection of albums, love the secret agent/thriller vibe and also the library albums, this must be one of my favourites posts so far.

I know very little about Lenny Bruce the person other than the well known showbiz facts that he was controversial, ahead of his time, etc. I must try and find out more, l have already just ordered the biopic as you mentioned it, l've always wanted to see it but never have. You sound very much like me Guideff in terms of buying books and not reading them. l have scores of them. Sometimes it takes years to eventually read them. My thoughts are well it's there, there's no rush, l'll do it when l'm in the mood for it, it's not going anywhere, lol

Jazz Excursion Into Hair -
more than a 'fun jazzy version' - a damn fine 'seriously fun jazzy version' - brilliantly put together - superb.

Ahead Of Hair -
I can understand it being 'THE holy grail of Hair' - on the odd one or two tracks the beginning could be classed as 'weird' but then the rest generates into something really beautiful - great listening experience - Sangster, truely A head (or a hair'd) of his time with this one.

Boston Light Operatic Society -
OK! it may be just 'a same version - different cast' - but still a pleasure to hear, almost sounds like 'how Hair would sound if done in the 50's'.

Frank Valdor Und Sein Orchester Musik Heute -
Actually a little understated masterpiece. So gentle and still so different.

Disco Spectacular -
Funky and cool - now this is a fun funky one. Quality disco (with element even of quality 'gospel disco' if there ever was such a thing). Even got passion and emotion in this one. All that in a disco setting must have been hard work to pull it off so well.

Hair Today - Galt MacDermot -
What fun Galt must have had doing these different versions of his original. Not a jumping on the bandwagon version at all - I loved it.

Hair: Surf Tribal Love-Rock Musical -
A fine tribute - an extensive mixed range bag - something for everyone.


Like I said in post #1105 - still holds true
"It's a weird sensation. In the back of your mind, when you're listening to the 'Hair' posts - you assume you should be hearing the same thing over again, but you're proving yourself wrong each time. It's as though you're always listening to something quite new and different than before - always. Like I say 'it's a weird sensation."
You just can't see (or rather hear)the join. And I still keep saying to myself 'no, this can't last - treehorns' not gonna' be able to top the previous one'. But you prove me wrong each time.
Can't wait for the next (vol 5) hair raising experience to come along.

Dawn of the Dead: The Unreleased Incidental Music

Much of the music used in the film was licensed from the De Wolfe Music Library, a much utilized source of stock music for film and TV projects. Although the Goblin score has been variously available since the film's release, it was not until 2004 that any of the highly sought-after 60-plus cues of library music used in the film were released on a compilation album from Trunk Records. All these cues (actually 74 library music pieces) have been researched & found by Allen Lighthiser & Darren Stuart in 2008/2009 and published on the Dawn Of The Dead Ultimate Soundtrack website.[1] The album included 'Cause I'm a Man' written by Cliff Twemlow and Peter Taylor under the pen name Peter Reno and recorded by the Pretty Things, and Herbert Chappell's 1965 composition "The Gonk" which plays over the final credits.[2] The track is used in many references to the film including Shaun of the Dead and a variation (performed in chicken clucks) is used as the end theme to Robot Chicken. The early part of the tune to "The Gonk" was used in "The Ladies' Bras", a track by Jonny Trunk and Wisbey which, at only 36 seconds long, became the shortest ever UK top 40 single when it made number 27 on 30 September 2007. Shaun of the Dead opens with the track "Figment" which also features on the compilation. The album's cover is taken from a Belgian promotional poster for the film.

As far as I can see 'The Classical Jazz Quartet' have only done those 3 - Bach, Rachmaninov and Tchaikovsky.
In truth it was a bit of a cheat thing to actually put them in the Attic thread, as they 're really a modern enough 'supergroup' each member actually a realised artist in his own right.

Apparently they do a lot of concert work, so whether they play any 'Prokoviev' at those I wouldn't know, but as I said, from what I've gathered they only did those 3 CDs (excluding a Christmas one).

Guideff, thanks for the link to Smackwater. That is a great version of the Ironside theme. Great to hear it again.
And whoever posted it - I don't seem to be able to locate it again - thanks for posting the Checkmate album. It's startlingly good - early Johnny Williams already at the peak of his creativity. The theme song is one of my very earliest kidhood memories, it and the image of water or something that I could never make out on our tiny b&w tv swirling around as the background image.

Lots of wonderful memories in these posts. How many different versions of the UNCLE theme alone?? Who knew that literally everyone who could play an instrument in the '60s released an album of theme music covers? What fun!

Time to bring into the mix one of my all time favorite singers, Blossom Dearie. Americans of a certain age may know her as the voice of "Adjectives" and "Figure 8" on Schoolhouse Rock. She of the baby doll voice was an original in the world of jazz vocals/piano stylings with a career that dated from the 50s (she got her start in Paris forming a vocal group, Blue Stars, which included Michel Legrand's sister, Christiane, and Bob Dorough...who would later join her on Schoolhouse Rock. The group evolved into The Swingle Singers, btw...)
