I saw this tour. And it was more than a touch sad as by the time she finally did the show (and a role she should have been perfect for), she was...a decade or so past the point where she could perform the part in terms of memory (she started the second act the night I saw it literally in a different scene...with completely different characters) and in terms of being engrained to just 'stand and deliver' all lines and songs. A new song for the show was written by it's creator, Carol Hall, and she performs a demo of it on the CD as well

Julie Andrews was only 22 when she released this, her debut solo album. But she already had an extensive r�sum� as an entertainer that included recordings dating back ten years; numerous appearances on the London stage; two Broadway musicals, The Boy Friend and My Fair Lady; and two American TV movie musicals, High Tor and Cinderella. She might have been expected to sing show tunes on her own LP, but instead she harked back to her British music hall days as a child and assembled a collection of English folk songs and art songs.

Julie Andrews avoided the expected with her debut solo album, The Lass with the Delicate Air, recording a set of English folk songs rather than a collection of show tunes. For her second album, which followed shortly, she bowed to the inevitable, as the album cover pointedly followed the title, Julie Andrews Sings, with a list of the musical theater composers whose songs she was singing. Backed for the second time by the arrangements and conducting of Irwin Kostal, she applied her precisely pronounced English accent to the lyrics of Oscar Hammerstein II, Lorenz Hart, Ivor Novello, Ira Gershwin, Johnny Mercer, E.Y. Harburg, Stanley Adams, Irving Berlin, Alan Jay Lerner, Cole Porter, and No�l Coward, and the melodies of Novello, Berlin, Porter, Coward, Richard Rodgers, George Gershwin, Jerome Kern, Harold Arlen, Hoagy Carmichael, Kurt Weill, and Frederick Loewe. Still only 22, she wasn't able (or wasn't coached) to apply much in the way of believable feeling to the songs, such that her best efforts were reserved for the British writers with whom she had the greatest familiarity, Novello ("We'll Gather Lilacs") and Coward ("Matelot"). Of course she also did respectable jobs with the American songwriting teams she had represented on Broadway and on television, Lerner & Loewe (a role-reversal take on "Come to Me, Bend to Me") and Rodgers & Hammerstein ("It Might as Well Be Spring"). But the collection could have used some livelier fare to set off the proper string-filled ballads, something of the flavor of Andrews' "Just You Wait" in My Fair Lady that would give her a chance to chew the scenery, and not just decorate it. Julie Andrews Sings demonstrated, if there had been any doubt, that Julie Andrews certainly could sing, but it didn't display all the ways she could sing.

Well, treehorn and ZEMOG123 - you continue to surpass yourselves. What a brilliant show.

First, treehorn, I'rd never heard of Ute Lemper (by the way, having just listened to Crimes of the Heart - loved it, really jazzy.) What an artist, and then you give us Ann Margret, (another one Ive never heard of). And then you've got Marvin Gaye's Broadway take, Now that was pure novalty, and then some more Julie Andrews (singing Country and Western - no less). Only just finished downloading most of those, not even had chance to listen to all of them.

And ZEMOG123, not content with giving us access to a good collection of Julie Andrews, we get the cream with another set showing her young early years , and then with both guns blazing you give us the two Frank Sinatra Box Sets. I've actually had these, myself, for some time now (a few years back contained in a torrent downloaded discography of his) so I won't need the links myself - but what a post - Brilliant, just brilliant.

You two guys need to slow down and stop spoiling us - It's a case of too good, too much, too soon - please have a heart and consider the strain you're putting the rest of us through, too much excitement isn't good for us 'oldies' you know.

The music of Ennio Morricone is, of course, cinematic in sweep and its gradations of nuance and emotion. The Vienna-based string trio Triology does an excellent job here massaging these 12 Morricone film pieces for all their cinematic dynamism, but they go further. They transform "Gabriel's Oboe" (from The Mission) into a brief, mournful Baroque-ish piece and elevate "The Man with the Harmonica" (from Once upon a Time in the West) into a howling, bent-note, shuffling delight. Pitching the violins of Daisy Jopling and Aleksey Igudesman together with the cello of Tristan Schulze, Triology utilize their lower-key ranges for deft rhythmic effect, giving Morricone's music a strong swing. Some jazz purists are still whining about records made during the 1970s by Canadian trumpeter Maynard Ferguson, damning him with faint praise and acting righteously indignant as if jazz and pop haven't fed off of each other since before the First World War. Recorded in 1973 both in London and New York while Ferguson was wrapping up his five-year residency in England and preparing to reestablish himself in the U.S., the music on this album is an exciting reminder of just how diverse the music scene really was during the early to mid-'70s, even if pigeonholers didn't yet have a controllable category for some of the sounds that were in the air at that time. Bear in mind what Donald Byrd, Brother Jack McDuff, Miles Davis, Yusef Lateef, Freddie Hubbard, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, and dozens of other major modern musicians were up to during that same time period. The fact that Ferguson and his keyboardist, Pete Jackson, were actively combining jazz with elements of pop, rock, and funk hardly seems objectionable from a 21st century standpoint. If during the late '70s and early '80s Ferguson attempted to ensure his own financial stability by making records that would appeal to an even wider audience -- that was his choice. As for the music on this album, it's much better than most jazz critics have ever admitted in writing. "Nice 'n Juicy," "Pocahontas," and Jackson's "Mother Fingers," "S.M.O.F.," and "Awright, Awright" are superbly funky big-band jams that work uncommonly well as soundtracks for cruise-control freeway driving, thanks in large part to electric bassist Dave Markee, drummer Randy Jones, New Zealand baritone saxophonist Bruce Johnstone, and Ferguson's wild brass section. (Listen also for Vemu Mukunda strumming the veena, or South Indian lute, during "S.M.O.F.")

When the Shrine suffered from a spate of Mega Takedown Notices last year - My thread entitled 'Another Side of Alan Tew' was also hit,
And I have only just now got around to re-uping the lost links.
I thought it only best that I post them with the new links, here, now, as really they are certainly applicable as 'Attic Stuff'
So for the next 3 days I will post these Alan Tew re-ups. After that normal service will be resummed.


This is what 'wikipedia' had to say about Alan Tew -

"Alan Tew was a British composer and arranger. He got his start as the pianist/arranger for the Len Turner Band based in London, in the 1950s.
Tew is known as a composer of library music, including the theme tunes for British television programmes, Doctor in the House called "Bond Street Parade", and ...And Mother Makes Three. He also composed all the music for the 1975 series, The Hanged Man, some of which was used as incidental music for The Two Ronnies, The Sweeney, the 2009 Blaxploitation spoof Black Dynamite, and would eventually become the introductory music for the American television series, The People's Court. That same track, entitled "The Big One", was used in an episode of the British detective show Van der Valk.
Tew also led his own orchestra, The Alan Tew Orchestra, and collaborated with Cat Stevens.
During his career, Tew made a number of orchestral albums with highly imaginative arrangements for the CBS label, though none of them has been reissued on CD. In particular, Tew's album The Magnificent Westerns (1969) is very highly regarded."


It is this other side of Alan Tew that I would like to present here.
I cannot deny that these are 'not my rips' - as I, like many others, have taken in the past, from others, what has been made freely available from easy listening lounge web sites elsewhere. It's no excuse, I know, but in my book, it's the sharing and spreading of good music that really counts.

Now this next one is down to pumma4, who sourced this 'rare find' and sent it to me.
Most of us are probably aware of Jim Steinman's influence with regards to Meat Loaf (Bat Out of Hell and so on)
Well this is what Artie Schroeck's influence did for 'The Loving Spoonful' - and this is the start of it all (1967 with this one and I think 'The Lovin' Spoonful''s albums only started after this, from 1968 onwards).
All except two (the Bonus tracks) are instrumentals - I loved this as soon as I heard it.
So from me a massive thankyou Pumma4 - I Just love it (or should that be luv it).

I'rd never actually ever heard of the '101 Strings' myself until I started this thread - never ever saw one of their albums in our house when I was lad, and that was probably at the time when they were releasing most of what they did - looks like I was more interested in the likes of Slade and such, where the nearest I ever got to what I thought was quality was Neil Diamond - Well there you are - seems I missed out a lot, and been playing catch-up ever since.

I had a hard look on the net, and buggered if I could find any reference to albums for these 2 OST's.

Is it me, or am I missing something.

If anyone can give us any info as to if these music albums even exist or better still, if they do, where can we get 'em from - would be greatfully appreciated, (got not cash to pay for the info - so it is a freebee we're asking for). Thanks.

"Dean Martin made four films as Donald Hamilton's Matt Helm. The first was "The Silencers" (1966) with a score by Elmer Bernstein. It's on LP and a Vocation CD. There are a couple of good vocals by Vicci Carr (who did the singing for Cyd Charisse in the film). Two versions of the vocal theme were released. A slower version can be found on "Spy Magazine Presents Spy Music" on the Rhino label.

"There is a second LP for the Silencers, but it's mostly Dean Martin singing. There are a couple of instrumentals (allegedly from the film) and a nice version of the theme.

"The second in the series was "Murderers' Row" (1966). This time Lalo Schifrin provided a knockout spy score that's just begging for a CD release. The next two flicks, "The Ambushers" (1967) and "The Wrecking Crew" (1969) were scored by Hugo Montenegro, but only a 45 of The Ambushers theme by Boyce and Hart as far as I know. It can be found on Boyce and Hart compilation CDs."

Before I get to 101 Strings Territory, I have to delve into Jack Jones Land. He is widely known for his recordings of "Wives and Lovers" (1964 Grammy Award, Best Pop Male Performance), "The Race Is On", "Lollipops and Roses" (1962, Grammy Award, Best Pop Male Performance), "The Impossible Dream", "Call Me Irresponsible", "Lady", but is best known for his iconic recording of the theme from The Love Boat (you know that song...you can guess his style choices for all the songs below...). Born in 1938 and still performing. All but "On Broadway" are Apple lossless

I'll ditto that.
I'rd always thought of Jack Jones, as 'Real Class' just like Tony Bennett and in their hay day I probably tended to shy away from them - (it was let's stick to the 'pop' stuff - what all your mates' was all listening too. In with the crowd - a form of reversed snobbery.)
Thanks treehorn for drawing my attention to him - I can now get to appreciate him - something I missed out on when I was young.

In 1979, New York City's Public Theater did an English Language production of "Umbrellas of Cherbourg." It was never legitimately recorded, but an in-house recording somehow leaked out (and sounds pretty darn good). The one notable cast member is Dean Pitchford, better known for his contributions to the film "Fame" and the musical bomb "Carrie"

Bought the Bluray of Th��tre du Ch�telet's symphonic production of Les Parapluies de Cherbourg as I noticed it had subtitles...a 5.1 surround sound audio...AND a lossless stereo audio track. It arrived yesterday and I of course immediately ripped the audio, tracked it, and uploaded it in Apple Lossless for y'all because I'm a giver. It features Natalie Dessay, Louise Leterme, Laurent Naouri, Vincent Niclo, Marie Oppert, Jasmine Roy, Franck Vincent and is conducted by Michel Legrand.The concert is really beautiful (huge orchestra, fully staged with 'paper cut out' scenery) and worth getting on DVD or Bluray) But sadly a CD was not released, so this is the next best thing

'treehorn quality' strikes again'

Michel Legrand's Les Parapluies de Cherbourg's - Ahead of it's time even back then, and there's nothing to match this masterpiece even now. You've just got to marvel at the film - everything about it says originality - I've actually had the DVD film for about a year and a half now - when 'treehorn recently mentioned that he'd just ripped 'Les Parapluies de Cherbourg, Version symphonique (BLURAY RIP)', I was of the impression that the film OST was already on the Shrine somewhere - it must be, I thought - and when I saw it wasn't - I even said to myself I must have it on my hardrive at least (I looked, I've got a Michel Legrand Anthology (15CD) and a 4 DC 'Le Cinema de Michel Legrand' and some other stuff, but no Film OST).
When treehorn posted it (along with the others)it sparked me off to watch the film again (for the umpteenth time) - 'Don't matter how often you watch it - you still find yourself emersed in it as though for the first time.

treehorn - that post was brill enough on it's own and then you top it with 'Les Parapluies de Cherbourg, Version symphonique (BLURAY RIP)', London Symphony Orchestra – Suites From "Umbrellas Of Cherbourg" And "Go-Between"' and 'Don Costa Plays The Umbrellas Of Cherbourg' (now thats a unique find).

And then there's 'New York City's Public Theater's English Language production of "Umbrellas of Cherbourg' - probably the rarest and most unique post of the whole thread (so far). Even in French there's no rhyming to the vocals - and you've got to think 'how and why on earth there hasn't been at least a Studio CD been done with the English vocals - in all these years no-one ever thought of doing one - beggers belief, it really does.

And you don't stop there - we then get 'Buddy Greco – Big Band & Ballads' and 'Petula Clark: Showstoppers' -
when 'Lyrically, Alan Bergman' came up I automaticaly (without reading the rest) asked myself 'who's 'Alan Bergman'
I know I'm repeating most of what you've already told us, but

Somebody just recently remarked that the forum search engine is really 'not up to it'.
I absolutely agree - mind you, it's our own fault really - what started out to be 'a dip in and see what's there' thread has fast become a haven for stuff that others probably know may well be here but very difficult to find if it is here, and even if they do find it's here it's difficult to find out exactly where.
Not only that, for us poor mortal contributors it's a job to remember sometimes not only if somethings already been put up by someone else but even if we've actually already posted it ourselves (well, really it's me I'm on about mostly). I now know for a fact that I've ended up duplicating a couple of contributors posts, and also maanged to even re-up a couple of my own.

I got on a "Fifty Percent" kick recently and a friend admonished me for not having heard Sylvia Sym's recording of it. Thanks to Amazon, was able to get a copy of her out of print tribute to the songs for Alan and Marilyn Bergman (so this is for you, Guideff :). For those unfamiliar with Sylvia Syms, she certainly had a life worth living. She was singing in nightclubs in NYC as a teenager and got (per wikipedia) 'informal training from Billie Holiday' (and I REALLY want to know what that means). Frank Sinatra called her the "Worlds Greatest Saloon Singer" and she her recording of "I Could Have Danced All Night" went Gold. And she died on stage at the Oak Room at the Algonquin.

And she sings the emotional crap out of "Fifty Percent"

And as you really owe it to yourself to hear Dorothy Loudon sing "Fifty Percent"...here's the Original Broadway Cast Recording of Ballroom, one of those 'beautiful flops' that has become legendary. Directed by Michael Bennett (first show he did after A Chorus Line - and cast members thought he spent more time directing touring productions of the latter than he did on the former...). Based on the tv movie "Queen of the Stardust Ballroom" (starring Maureen Stapleton), written by Jerome Kass, with music by Billy Goldenberg and lyrics by Alan and Marilyn Bergman. The musical starred Dorothy Loudon as a widow finding new life in the Stardust Ballroom with a married man, played by Vincent Gardenia (that will make "Fifty Percent" make sense :).

I don't have it - but I'm sure I've seen it on some other blog travels before now - and then decided not to download it for the forum , because at the time it didn't seem to have a TV, Film or classiical connection in it.

The Hawaiians, released in the UK as Master of the Islands, is a 1970 American historical film based on the novel Hawaii by James A. Michener. It was directed by Tom Gries with a screenplay by James R. Webb. The cast included Charlton Heston as Whipple Hoxworth and Geraldine Chaplin. The performance by Tina Chen led to a Golden Globe nomination as best supporting actress.
The film was based on the book's later chapters, which covered the arrival of the Chinese and Japanese and the growth of the plantations. The third chapter of the book had been made into a film, Hawaii, in 1966.

Here's a jazz cover album of the Broadway flop Rex by jazz icon, Shelly Manne, (because....I seriously have no idea why on earth he would choose this one). Rex had music by Richard Rodgers, lyrics by Sheldon Harnick and libretto by Sherman Yellen, based on the life of King Henry VIII. The original production starred Nicol Williamson and was one of Glenn Close's first shows (and her first musical), in which she played Princess Mary. It has one very lovely song though, "Away From You"

Only just solved the problem I've just recently had with difficulty in downloading Mediafire files, (the host is contrary sometimes - tends to play silly buggers for no apparent reason).Just about solved that and then get 'trouble at mill' (pressing issues at home) - so haven't even got round to downloading anything much yet - like treehorn - your "Forgotten Broadway", Syliva Syms or Ballroom or ZEMOG123 your Sinatra box set - so looking forward to those.
Did however manage to download and listen to, ZEMOG123 your 'Julie and Carol at Carnegie Hall' - You just can't get away from it that Julie is a one off - unique and immediately identifable class - and the first song hit the nail on the head - thanks ZEMOG123.
And thanks treehorn for Shelly Manne Plays Richard Rodgers' Rex, really loved it - actually an understated album.

Where else can you get the likes of John Barry, The Divine Comedy, Laurie Johnson and Dusty Springfield all in one mix.
This next offering must have originaly been meant as a one track mix (all the seperated tracks show all the telltale signs - the abrupt endings and the abrupt starts of the next one that jars your hearing). With the aid of my trusty Adobe Audition 3 I've done a one track file that brings it back to what I think should have been presented as in the first place. So you've got the choice of what I originaly got and (so as you can't say I didn't warn you) i've also put a link for the mix as well (I'm pretty sure you can't see/hear the join).

For me, it was the first time to get to know of and hear 'The Divine Comedy's - National Express' - a brill fun song to die for.

Volume one of this Krzysztof Komeda series on vinyl looks at Komeda's classic work for Polanski's Knife in the Water (N�z w wodzie) (1962) along with rare earlier recordings that have never been on vinyl before. These were recorded by Komeda's progressive trio at the legendary Jazz Jamboree Festivals in Warsaw. Together these recording signify a sea change in the sound of modern jazz -- especially in Poland where it had been banned until Stalin's death in 1953. By the early 1960s, Komeda had found his modern sound, one which he would build on and develop through various film scores and free-jazz sessions. His untimely death in 1969 left the jazz world with a small but significant hole, one that seems to grow bigger as more people realize just how unique and versatile his music was.

Knife in the Water (Polish: ''N�z w wodzie'') is a 1962 Polish drama film co-written and directed by Roman Polanski, which was nominated for Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. Polanski's first feature film, it features three characters in a story of rivalry and sexual tension.
Knife in the Water has garnered acclaim from film critics since its release, and is one of Polanski's best-reviewed works.
