Touch's only album briefly enjoyed legendary status during its recording and again shortly after its release, but all too rapidly entered the realm of the well-kept secret. It may or may not be the very first progressive rock album, but what is indisputable is that few bands engineered a more satisfying collision of rock, jazz, psychedelia, and classical music during the genre's heyday. Much of the album's effectiveness stems from the soaring imagination of the band's leader, keyboard player, and principal composer, Don Gallucci, incredibly just 19 years old. Throughout, he plays only piano, clavinet, and what sounds like a cheesy old theater organ -- no Mellotron, no synths -- yet he does so with a virtuosity tempered by the kind of restraint that would become all too rare among bands like ELP, Yes, and other behemoths of the prog era. Opener "We Feel Fine" demonstrates that this is a band that ca
n rock, too -- an impression confirmed by the band's single "Miss Teach." But it's "Friendly Birds" that confirms that Touch could do a lot more than kick ass. Essentially a trio for piano, guitar, and bass -- with a brief vocal introduction -- its dynamic range alone makes it remarkable. Over the course of just four minutes, it swoops and soars as piano and guitar trade phrases in a manner more typical of chamber music than rock. More remarkable yet is Gallucci's ability to weave melodies and riffs together without ever resorting to mere rhetoric. "Friendly Birds" finally soars into the distance after a series of shattering climaxes all the more impressive for the fact that no drums are involved. "Down at Circe's Place" is, in its way, equally extraordinary, effectively fusing a link between the psychedelia of the late '60s and the more expansive styles to come. Its climactic two minutes, best lik
ened to the sound of Santana on a really bad trip, has to be one of the most satisfyingly cacophonous noises in all of rock, despite the total absence of electric guitars. The album also contains two epic tracks in "The Spiritual Death of Howard Greer" and "Seventy Five," only one of which really comes off. But while the former drinks deep from the well of hippie pretension, with its tale of some straight who's, like, spiritually dead but doesn't know it (and throws in everything from Gregorian chant to good-time boogie), the latter is a genuine tour de force. Here it's not just Gallucci's organ playing that shines. Vocalist Jeff Hawks gets to demonstrate a truly formidable vocal technique -- one moment up close and breathy, the next shrieking up a storm -- while guitarist Joey Newman also turns in a genuinely thrilling solo, featuring a curiously harsh, lo-fi tone that was entirely his own to roun
d off the album. Both CD reissues feature extra tracks that never come close to matching the original album, but the Eclectic version benefits from vastly improved sound quality. �

Top Gun (1986)
Een film geregisseerd door Tony Scott en ge�nspireerd op het artikel "Top Guns", geschreven door Ehud Yonay voor California Magazine.
Op 3 maart 1969 werd een pilotentrainingsprogramma gestart, Fighter Weapon School, beter bekend als Top Gun.
Openingsshots hebben vaak invloed op het kijkgedrag en dan zal het begin van deze film zeker positief uitvallen. Prachtige plaatjes van opstijgen en landen van straaljagers op een vliegdekschip. Vrijwel de gehele film is getraceerd op vaart, snelheid en dan past dit er fraai in.
De ijzersterke combinatie van actie, muziek en romantiek maakten deze film van Tony Scott tot de blockbuster van de jaren 80. Top Gun laat heel mooi de snelheid en de dynamiek zien van de luchtgevechten en heeft prachtige beelden van de vliegdekschepen en de luchtruim.
Voor de nog jonge Tom Cruise was het de begin van een succesvolle carri�re en de film zorgde ervoor dat de Amerikaanse luchtmacht werd overspoeld met inschrijvingen voor de opleiding tot straaljagerpiloot.
Een groep uitverkoren piloten krijgt een speciale opleiding, de "Top Gun". Daarbij ook Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, die met zijn maatje Nick "Goose" Bradshaw een sterk team vormt. Hij dankt zijn uitverkiezing o.a. aan de stress, waaraan zijn grote concurrent ten onder gaat, maar komt in de elitegroep vanzelfsprekend ook toppiloten tegen. Zijn grootste tegenstrever is daarbij Tom "Iceman" Kazinsky. Er komt een competitie wie de beste wordt in de opleiding. Deze opleiding wordt verzorgd door Commander Mike "Viper" Metcalf, bijgestaan door de instructrice Charlie Blackwood.

There have been plenty of Guess Who collections on the market, from the original Best of the Guess Who to the multi-disc Track Record. Of all of these, the best is the 1999 collection Greatest Hits, which contains a generous 18 songs, including all but two of their charting American singles -- not counting 1965's "Shakin' All Over," the missing songs are "Broken" (the B-side to "Albert Flasher") and "Runnin' Back to Saskatoon" (which barely scraped the charts). Although the Guess Who's albums are distinctive (more so than their reputation would lead you to believe), there's little question that they're best heard as a singles band, and this is the best place to hear them that way. Live at the Paramount was the first live album released by Canadian rock group, The Guess Who. It was recorded live on May 22, 1972 at the Paramount Theatre in Seattle, Washington. The 2000 re-release included SIX bonus tracks from the same show which were not included on the original pressing!

The August 2000 reissue of Live at the Paramount on the Buddha label has 13 songs, the whole 75 minutes of music from the first of two shows, and provides the best explanation of how the Guess Who endured as a major concert draw years after their biggest hits were behind them; when they were spot-on, as they were that night, they gave an exciting show. Remixed and remastered properly, this is now a killer concert album, showing off the double lead guitar attack that was a hallmark of their live sound in blazing glory, energizing even familiar songs like "New Mother Nature," and Burton Cummings near the peak of his form with the band as a singer. Surprisingly, the songs that were left off of the original LP included several hits, both vintage ("These Eyes," "No Time") and relatively recent ("Rain Dance," "Share the Land"), though the highlight is "Sour Suite," which is a dazzling showcase for Cummin
gs as a singer and pianist. The remixing also helps the material that was on this album originally, pumping up the volume on the bluesy jam that opens "American Woman," which also sounds a lot better (and is worth hearing in the 15 minute jam version featured here). "Share the Land" comes off better here than its official version, set ablaze by Kurt Winter's and Don McDougal's guitars and a spirited vocal performance.?

From the opening fuzz guitar and Farfisa organ riffs of "Feeling Zero," and this is a definite step back in time to a far trippier era of rock & roll. The music contained here is largely a shamelessly derivative batch with nods to all the then-current trends; the Grace Slick-Jefferson Airplane inspired vocals on the title track and "Changes Brought to Me," the pure British pop of their hit "Please Leave Me Alone," "Happy World of Captain K" and "Hobbit's Dream," the Yardbirds-style raveup of "Chocolate Angel," and the "Paint It Black"-era Stones bounce of "Up Down Turn Around World" are all earmarks of an isolated time in rock history that, although often replicated, can never be truly duplicated. But the minor-key riffing on "Patterns," the dirgelike version of "Louie Louie," and tongue-in-cheek, over-the-top version of "Over the Rainbow" show that there was also some originality to the band's off
erings as well. This retrospective includes 24 tracks, ten unissued, featuring alternate takes of "Feeling Zero" and the title track, all from the original master tapes. In light of all the retro hoopla surrounding this kind of sound, this collection stands as a small landmark to the style. Get your lava lamp warmed up for this one.

Hollywoodland (2006)
Een film geregisseerd door Allen Coulter gebaseerd op een van de meest beruchte mysteries van Hollywood. De TV legende George Reeves, ooit beroemd geworden als kindsterretje, ge�indigd in de TV serie Superman, werd in juni 1959 doodgeschoten in zijn huis.
Hollywoodland is erg onderhoudend en het leven van George Reeves wordt in een reeks van flashbacks gepresenteerd en daarnaast komt het leven van Louis Simo aan bod.
Er zitten prachtige sc�nes in de film en op bloedstollende wijze is hiermee weergegeven hoe een personage met een acteur aan de haal kan gaan. Al deze fraaie sc�nes vormen bij elkaar een harmonieus geheel.
Op 16 juni 1959 wordt acteur George Reeves dood aangetroffen in zijn huis. Reeves is de vertolker van Superman in de televisieserie "The Adventures of Superman" die door miljoenen kinderen wordt gevolgd. Het grote publiek is geschokt door de zelfmoord van de man van staal. Priv� detective Louis Simo raakt betrokken bij het onderzoek en is er niet van overtuigd dat de grote held van zijn jonge zoon Evan vrijwillig uit het leven is gestapt.

The Snow Queen (2005)
Een film geregisseerd door Julian Gibbs, gebaseerd op het sprookje van Hans Christian Andersen uit 1845, "The Snow Queen". De componist Paul K. Joyce schreef de muziek, die wordt uitgevoerd door het Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.
In deze film (60 min), is gekozen voor een combinatie van "echte beelden" met animaties. Buiten de acteurs zelf is de rest volledig aangevuld met animaties die schilderachtig en realistisch aandoen.

Verder wordt er spaarzaam gebruik gemaakt van kleuren. Er is een duidelijk contrast tussen de warme kleuren die horen bij de lente en de huiselijke sfeer en enerzijds de kille tinten die horen bij de winterlandschappen die het meisje moet trotseren op haar tocht om Kay terug te vinden. Het versterkt het idee dat deze verfilming van het sprookje uit een andere tijd is. Van toen alles nog mooi en romantisch was.
The Snow Queen is een hartverwarmende vertelling die vooral kinderen zal aanspreken, waarbij het enigszins surrealistisch aandoende beeld de magie en fantasie van het verhaal versterkt. Een apart rol in deze film is weggelegd voor Patrick Stewart, die zijn stem leende aan de raaf die het meisje Gerda begeleid tijdens haar bijzondere reddingstocht. Wordt dit een klassieker die regelmatig rond de kerstdagen te zien zal zijn? Wie weet?
Het magische avontuur van Snow Queen begint als Gerda en haar moeder zich op een koude winteravond ontfermen over de straatarme jonge zwerver Kay. Tussen Gerda en Kay ontstaat een warme vriendschap. Alles gaat goed, tot Kay op een koude winteravond door toedoen van de Sneeuwkoningin een ijssplinter in zijn oog krijgt. Door deze "koude" betovering van de ijzige Sneeuwkoningin verandert het karakter van Kay. Kort daarna wordt hij door de Sneeuwkoningin meegenomen naar haar paleis in het ijzige noorden. Iedereen denkt dat Kay een gewone dief is die er vandoor is gegaan, maar Gerda gaat op pad om haar vriendje te redden. Vertrouwen, liefde en moed zijn haar gidsen op een gevaarlijke zoektocht door een vreemd landschap. Zal het meisje in de roodfluwelen mantel opgewassen zijn tegen de enorme koude macht van de Sneeuwkoningin?

Mijn kennismaking met Zappa was een cassettebandje met op kant A The man from Utopia en op Kant B Ship Arriving To Late Too Late To Save A Drowning Witch. Lang heb ik gedacht dat The Man From Utopia. Fantastisch. Erg leuk om dan ook een nooit verschenen album te vinden, vergelijkbaar met de eerder gespotte Crush All Boxes, andere versies bevat van de nummers die ik van deze twee albums ken. Gewoon weer een erg lekkere goedklinkende bootleg.

The Pledge (2001)
Liefhebbers van een avondje film, vergeet niet dat er nog tig andere films zijn en die om u aandacht schreeuwen. Kleine pareltjes die veel te goed zijn om in de anonimiteit te verzwelgen.
3 keer is scheepsrecht. Dat spreekwoord gaat op voor Sean Penn. The Pledge was de derde film waarbij de gevierde Hollywood-acteur plaats had genomen op de regisseursstoel. De eerste 2 films waarin de acteurs weliswaar topprestaties leverden, maar het verhaal nog wat te wensen overliet. Bij zijn derde film zijn deze zwakke punten echter tot een minimum beperkt. The Pledge is een intrigerende thriller, maar houdt na een krachtige opening bovenal een ingetogen karakter. De film is traag, maar in dit geval is het tempo een belangrijk element in de structuur van de film. Functioneel dus.
Penn laat, zoals het een regisserend acteur betaamt, zijn personages alle ruimte. Jack Nicholson is in topvorm als de melancholische detective Jerry Black en dat Penn een invloedrijk man is in Hollywood, blijkt wel uit de indrukwekkende lijst namen die hij met name voor bijrollen wist te strikken.
Sam Shepard, Benicio Del Toro, Harry Dean Stanton, Helen Mirren, Vanessa Redgrave en Mickey Rourke draven op. Vooral de onherkenbare Del Toro laat opnieuw een diepe indruk achter, ook al is hij slechts vijf minuten in beeld.
De kracht van The Pledge is dat er steeds een stukje van het mysterie wordt ontrafeld, maar nooit te veel tegelijk verklapt. Het einde is alles behalve traditioneel. En juist vergeleken met het voortkabbelende begin en middenstuk maakt dat de nasmaak nog indringender en wranger.
Jerry Black staat aan de vooravond van zijn pensioen, na een lange en succesvolle loopbaan als rechercheur van moordzaken. Tijdens zijn afscheidsfeest dient zich echter een nieuwe zaak aan: ergens in de bossen wordt het lichaam gevonden van een klein meisje dat verkracht en vermoord is. De moeder van het slachtoffer dwingt Jerry een belofte af te leggen dat hij de moordenaar zal opsporen en berechten. Terwijl zijn collega's ervan overtuigd zijn dat ze de dader al snel gevonden hebben, weigert Black te geloven in diens bekentenis. Black is de enige die vermoedt dat de werkelijke dader nog altijd rondloopt, en dat te zijner tijd een nieuw slachtoffer zal vallen. Hij zal niet rusten voor hij zijn belofte heeft ingelost.

�2007 digitally remastered and expanded edition of the British glamsters' 1974 album The soundtrack to the band's feature film, one of the greatest Rock 'N' Roll movies ever made, Slade In Flame is regarded by many as the group's best album, a record on which they displayed their versatility and introduced some of their very finest compositions.�
�Slade in Flame is a tough album to judge. It marks the end of Slade's rule over the British charts -- the album went to number six (the band's previous four LPs reached number one), but it would be nearly ten years before the band would return to the top of the pops. Made as an accompanying piece to the movie of the same name, Slade in Flame was different than the group's other records. It's an artistic tour de force for a band that was looked on as "just a good time." Although Slade was that, the band had a lot more in its bag of tricks, and this album shows it. Most folks (if not all) were expecting Slade to come out with a Monkees-type movie: lots of slapstick and a funny, lighthearted good time. Instead, the band delivered a much more reality-based film and album. Don't worry, though, because it's still pure Slade. The album stretches the band's stylistic universe to include brass and more key
boards than before. The lyrics are a little more serious than you might expect -- the album is about what a bummer it can be to be famous, as well as the all of the advantages (girls). From the opening number, "How Does It Feel," Slade sets a different tone. A piano and vocal intro greets the listener. Of course, by the end of the song the full band is rocking furiously. They don't let up on the classic "Them Kinda Monkeys Can't Swing," which features great drumming by Don Powell. "So Far So Good" is a beautiful rocker, and was covered by Alice Cooper songwriter Mike Bruce on his first solo album. On "OK Yesterday Was Yesterday," Noddy gives his lungs a big-time workout.�

�Sky was a British instrumental group that specialised in fusing a variety of musical styles including light rock, progressive rock, classical and jazz. The group's best known members were classical guitarist John Williams, bass player Herbie Flowers (a former member of Blue Mink and T.Rex), and Francis Monkman, a founder member of progressive rock band Curved Air.
In 1980, Sky recorded and released their second album, Sky 2 - a album which repeated on and built upon its predecessor's success (becoming the tenth highest selling album in Britain that year). The album included Monkman's side-long rock suite "FIFO" (a piece inspired by computer processing, on which Monkman played electric guitar in addition to keyboards) and four classical pieces including three established chamber music pieces (played entirely straight) and the band's souped-up electric treatment of Bach's "Toccata and Fugue in D Minor". The latter was released as a single (under the name of "Toccata") and reached number 5 in the national pop charts, giving the band the opportunity of performing on Top Of The Pops.�

�Widely cited as one of the most important private press releases in all 1970s psychedelia, D.R. Hooker's The Truth might actually be one of those obscure lost gems that's worth the customarily inordinate amount of interest such period pieces are afforded. D.R. Hooker was a man slightly askew with his time: from the robes he wears on the cover to the quasi mystical lyrics, he's very much connected to the hippy era, and given that this album was recorded in 1972, in a time post-Charles Manson, he was brave to associate so strongly with all the imagery pertaining to cults. Musically, Hooker looks beyond the parameters of the hippy movement, dipping into a more ambitiously studio-oriented sound than Hooker's half-troubadour, half-prophet image on the sleeve might suggest. The noisy, fuzzy elements are particularly effective, and surprisingly intricate in their arrangement and recording. 'Forge Your Ow
n Chains' takes this to an extreme, expertly deploying advanced loungey jazz figures with an onslaught of brass. This all sounds far more ambitious and accomplished than the vast majority of private press releases that tend to emerge, and there's certainly a strong case to be made for this record being one of those precious few curiosities from the private press movement to feel like more than a kitsch comic aside. Well worth your investigation.

�After ten years, the Mermen finally return with a new album, and it was worth the wait.
There are so many different elements to be found on In God We Trust that it's hard to separate them all out. The distinctively Arabic melodies on opening track "One Hundred Foot Lemon" are a pleasant surprise, woven seamlessly into the usual Mermen sound. 'More Wood Less Head" starts out sounding like electronica, then gradually develops a country flavor, and by the middle it's turned into something that sounds like an updated Ennio Morricone soundtrack. "Apo Calypso" has a similar vibe with a few more surf elements. "There Is A Door, It Opens, Then It Is Closed" is beautiful and uplifting for the first half, then turns dark and spooky in the middle, ending on a melancholic note.
As expected, the level of musicianship here is impressive � guitarist Jim Thomas has a gorgeous tone whether he's focusing on classic surf guitar or going off on one of his many odd tangents.
The Mermen have always been weird (in a good way), and In God We Trust is no exception. They've added a few new elements (as they always do), but they still sound like themselves. Even with the presence of tracks that play on darker emotions, like "Righteous Punishment," overall this is an unexpectedly soothing album. There are definite undertones of dissatisfaction (unsurprising, as the band has stated that this album's themes were informed by current events � the title is the official motto of the United States) but they're woven into such stunningly gorgeous music that it's impossible not to feel uplifted.

The Death of Mr. Lazarescu (2005)

��n van de meeste succesvolle films van regisseur Cristi Puiu over een bejaarde alcoholist Dante Remus Lazarescu die de hele nacht door dokters van het kastje naar de muur wordt gestuurd terwijl zijn toestand zienderogen verslechtert.
Regisseur Puiu filmt deze lange ambulancetrip in "real time" en dat blijkt een schot in de roos. De camera veroordeelt niet, maar geeft alleen weer wat er gebeurt. De film is lang, maar dat is de nacht voor meneer Lazarescu ook. Met zwarte humor doorspekt is The Death of Mr. Lazarescu een lust voor alle zinnen. De acteerprestaties zijn fantastisch, de acteurs weten je het overtuigende verhaal in te trekken. Het klinkt allemaal misschien erg pessimistisch en somber, maar schijnt het toch niet te zijn. Ook al maakt het medische personeel liever grappen over de grootte van meneer Lazarescu�s lever, de heldenrol van Mioara maakt veel goed.
Op het filmfestival van Cannes mocht de film de hoofdprijs in ontvangst nemen. Een aanrader.
De eenzame weduwnaar en alcoholist Dante Remus Lazarescu voelt zich al dagen ziek, hij heeft maag en hoofdpijn, is duizelig en besluit om hulp in te schakelen. Hij belt een ambulance, maar er worden hem zoveel vragen gesteld, dat meneer Lazarescu twijfelt of ze hem wel geloven. Hij vraagt zijn buren om hulp en deze zorgen er uiteindelijk voor dat de ambulance opnieuw komt. Zijn buren ergeren zich aan de stank van Lazarescu's katten en komen erachter dat hij een zus heeft in een plaats vlakbij en een kind in Canada. Hij heeft weinig contact met zijn familieleden. Uiteindelijk besluit het ambulancepersoneel, de verpleegkundige Mioara Avram en de chauffeur Leon hem naar het ziekenhuis te brengen. Eenmaal daar wordt hij naar weer een ander ziekenhuis gestuurd, en daarna nog naar een ander ziekenhuis.

Faces (sometimes known as The Faces) are an English rock band formed in 1969 by members of the Small Faces after Steve Marriott left that group to form Humble Pie. The remaining Small Faces - Ronnie Lane (bass guitar), Ian McLagan (keyboards) and Kenney Jones (drums & percussion) - were joined by Ronnie Wood (guitar) and Rod Stewart (lead vocals), both from The Jeff Beck Group, and the new line-up was renamed Faces. Faces released four studio albums and toured regularly until the autumn of 1975, although Stewart simultaneously pursued a solo recording career, and during the band's final year Wood also toured with The Rolling Stones, whom he later joined.

Although labeled a psychedelic band in their day, the Opera never sat comfortably in that strawberry field, partially because of the diversity of their sound, but also due to the simple fact they were just too far ahead of their time even for the psyched-out crowd. In fact, Elmer Gantry's Velvet Opera continued to sound thoroughly modern for decades, while their myriad musical meanderings took them down wayward byways that later became stylistic highways -- at least in their native U.K.. So it's no surprise then, that this band would have slotted perfectly into the Britpop scene, or going back further in time, into the R&B-drenched mod scene. The Opera's admiration for R&B is evident on "Intro," an homage to Archie Bell & the Drells, while their equal respect for bluesy jazz is showcased on a fabulous cover of Oscar Brown's "I Was Cool" which absolutely smokes. "Flames," in contrast, fires the band
straight into rockabilly, and boasts a thumping intro bassline that, coincidentally enough, would also storm through the Jam's "Town Called Malice." So where's the psychedelia? Well "Air" languidly drifts on sitars across India, but it's heard most magnificently on the instrumental freak-out "Walter Sly Meets Bill Bailey." The rest of the 13-song set, in contrast, slides into gentler, harmony drenched numbers reminiscent of the Kinks, early Small Faces, and of course the Beatles. [The Akarma label's reissue of the album appends the Opera's trio of singles released between 1967 and 1969. Thus we find the 45 rpm versions of "Flames" and "Mary Jane," as well as the driving non-album "Volcano," accompanied by their B-sides. It's a welcome return for a seminal album, and makes it all the harder to believe Gantry himself would later turn up in 1975 fronting one-hit U.K. wonders Stretch, while the Opera'
s rhythm section itself would resurface in the Strawbs.]
