ROOM 217 IS CALLING

SEDUCTION—OBSESSION—MURDER

The 21-22 Season opens with Puccini’s heart-racing drama. A corrupt chief of police has a cruel ultimatum for Rome’s most celebrated prima donna, Tosca: submit to his lustful desires, or trigger the execution of her beloved.

Based on Stephen King’s spinechilling novel, The Shining brings the hopeful Torrance family to Colorado’s isolated Overlook Hotel. Little do they know that the Overlook’s spectral guests are determined to repeat the hotel’s grim history.

Filled with some of opera’s most iconic melodies, Bizet’s smoldering drama tells the tale of the brazen and seductive Carmen. What fate, or choice, waits for the woman no man can tame?

FROM THE GENERAL/ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

PELHAM G. PEARCE, JR.

Our lives were forever impacted in March of 2020. The COVID-19 virus brought our physical connection to the outside world to a screeching halt. Since then, each and every one of us has struggled to communicate and interact both personally and professionally. Ultimately, we’ve found new ways of accomplishing things — shopping, groceries, school…everything. As a consequence, what we’ve also discovered is that nothing takes the place of human interaction. We yearn for it. And, when we find ways to connect — even separated by 6 feet and covered in protective equipment — we again become joyful. For me, this has driven home not only what is so incredibly special about live musical storytelling, but, in particular, what makes the Central City Opera House such a unique and wonderful place in which to share it. In our intimate and beautiful space, we gather year after year to experience riveting, transformative, human storytelling up close and personal. It’s a place to be together. Thank you for your support over this last year. Your generosity and faith in Central City Opera brought an outpouring of donations for our COVID-19 Relief Fund. Gifts of all sizes from donors both new and long-standing helped the 200+ Festival company members who bring Central City Opera to life each summer to safely weather this storm. The financial assistance proved meaningful and life-changing. Your pledges to our Endowment Campaign secured an enduring future for that undeniable Central City Opera magic. And your kind words of encouragement were a balm for our dedicated, professional staff who worked tirelessly to pivot the organization toward this reimagined, outdoor season. We continue our work because we must: after all, music is healing. Our lives and souls are enriched by simply being together to experience art. Pandemic or not, we know that the show must go on. Looking ahead to 2022, our 90th anniversary season, what better time to reenter the Opera House and celebrate great art and the trials we’ve overcome, shoulder to shoulder? I wish you, and all whom you hold dear, much success as we rebuild our world together. Sincerely,

Pelham G. Pearce, Jr. General/Artistic Director

The March Opera Teaser was the last “normal” event held by Central City Opera before COVID-19 restrictions went into place. The Guild continued the tradition of Planting Day by hosting a socially-distanced event that allowed the Opera House gardens to bloom beautifully throughout the summer and into the fall. CCO Al Fresco allowed Central City residents and visitors to experience opera outside of the regular summer festival season. Everyone at CCO from staff, to Guild members, to the Board of Directors learned very quickly how to utilize Zoom meetings for socialization and learning!

FROM THE BOARD CO-CHAIRS

GREGG KVISTAD AND ANNE MCGONAGLE

Welcome to Central City Opera’s 2021 Festival! As many of you have witnessed over the years, Central City Opera’s mission is to “sing extraordinary stories to spark imagination, inspire creativity and open minds to the breadth of human experience.” That holds this year — a year like no other — as all of us, Central City Opera’s artists, staff members, supporters and patrons have really been put to task. How do we stage and enjoy outstanding, imaginative performances in the midst of a constantly changing world that not only informs, but actually defines and specifies how that mission will be realized? Every once in a while, going back to one’s roots is a source of inspiration. Especially this year. How do we spark imagination in a new performance environment? How do we do that in a completely different setting, in the open air, outside our beloved 1878 Opera House? In short, it is complicated. But it is also invigorating, thought-provoking and healing in ways we have never experienced before. Thankfully, Central City Opera has 89 years of rich history and experience to draw upon. Our standards have not wavered; every artistic and logistical detail has been handled with the utmost forethought and care. We invite you to take it all in as we endeavor to inspire creativity and open minds to revel in this beautiful art form. Though we’ve never done it in quite this manner, this is what Central City Opera has done for generations and will continue to do for many more. We are excited to welcome our patrons back to Central City Opera, live and in-person!

THEY CAN’T BE KEPT FROM SINGING BY MARGARET SIEGRIST The path of an opera singer is not for the faint of heart. During a regular season, close to 900 young singers compete for 20-30 slots in Central City Opera’s acclaimed Bonfils-Stanton Foundation Artists Training Program. Those who make the cut immerse themselves in a jam-packed eight-week season, devouring courses in language and diction, movement, acting and stage combat; then immediately putting those skills to use rehearsing and performing roles in Festival productions. This year’s young artists were selected through the same rigorous audition process and will hone their craft in a season chock-full of performance and professional development. But after 15+ months innovating in order

to perform in the digital world, learning skills never-before required of their profession and absolutely scrapping their way through 2020 for the love of this art form — what they bring to our Festival is unlike any group before them. Like most of the Festival company, members of the training program work primarily as freelancers. They travel the nation, sometimes the world, on a job-to-job basis — appearing in competitions, singing roles, participating in young artist programs, often a bit of everything. When COVID-19 shut down our industry, emerging artists faced an especially challenging situation as they’re at such a crucial moment in their careers. Each singer is working to bridge the gap from training into main stage contracts. Most are

Each and every young singer has shown grit and passion beyond imagination finishing the last years of their degrees as they tackle their first few seasons in the business. Building experience and professional relationships through young artist programs is a valuable step for emerging opera singers, and all the opportunity of 2020 eroded beneath their feet. As the arts industry struggled to continue creating, young opera singers acted as unexpected and fearless leaders. Many quickly developed audio/visual recording skills of their own for virtual performances and newly online audition circuits. With shows moving off the stages and into the digital world, artists bravely put their hard-earned craft on the line for personal projects, collaborations and companies endeavoring into new territory. In the midst of all this essential expansion, the singers who have weathered this storm also managed to keep their voices in shape, learn hundreds of pages of music and continue refining their artistry.

While we salute the hard work of the Bonfils-Stanton Foundation Artists Training Program members every season, this roster of resilient 2021/2020 artists deserves particularly hearty recognition. Each and every young singer performing at Hudson Gardens Amphitheater or the Opera House Gardens has shown grit and passion beyond imagination. No pandemic can keep them from singing, and whatever the state of opera house stages, they’ll be artists to watch for years to come. OPERA OUTSIDE THE BOX AND ONLINE Central City Opera's Educational Programs BY EMILY MURDOCK ON MARCH 13, 2020, everyday life in Colorado — and the world — ground to a halt. In the face of COVID-19, opera seemed…frivolous. Pointless. Nonessential. But as time went on and shutdowns continued, people came to realize two things. 1) This pandemic was not going to be over soon, and 2) The arts are powerful, necessary forces in boosting mental health and strengthening coping skills. They are a source of emotional release, inspiration, beauty and community, and Central City Opera’s education team swiftly reimagined and developed programs, intentionally centering those qualities. We released our first virtual education program, a selfguided online course called Opera Up Close in April of

2020. As teachers and students acclimated to video and online learning, we began using those same tools to partner with schools. “While we didn’t book virtual programs very often in the beginning of the pandemic, teachers have become much more comfortable and confident with this style of learning,” says Education Coordinator Meg Ozaki Graves. “We are now teaching virtual programs every week.” Since launching that first course, CCO’s education department developed a total of 14 customizable virtual programs. They range from remote masterclasses, to Yoga and the Voice workshops, recorded performances with artist talkbacks, to our newest offering, Storytelling

The arts are powerful – even necessary – forces in boosting mental health and strengthening coping skills. with Sound. Teachers seem to appreciate that we pivoted quickly to provide resources that enhance their existing curriculum. Happily, the team also discovered that remote programs are a great way to reach the farthest corners of Colorado, opening up opportunities to students and teachers in rural communities in a way that we were not able to before. While nothing can replace the magic of live performance, we’ve uncovered many educational tools that work well virtually. That growth is here to stay. The CCO staff also dove into an unprecedented time of professional development during 2020, immersing ourselves in the resources and community of OPERA America and Alliance for Music Education Equity (AMEE).

We are inspired to forge ahead with the diversity, equity, inclusion and access values that are increasingly central to our company and industry. Starting fall of 2021, Central City Opera’s education team is excited to produce in-person performances of the children’s opera, Frida Kahlo and the Bravest Girl in the World. This new 30-minute work premiered in 2019, commissioned by Fort Worth Opera and written by Joe Illick and Mark Campbell. It tells the true story of a Mexican girl named Mariana, who asks the famous painter Frida Kahlo to paint her portrait. Mariana learns about Frida’s experiences and is inspired to live bravely and boldly, just like Frida. PRESERVING THE PAST

A QUIET SUMMER OF RENEWAL BY ERIN OSOVETS

DURING A NORMAL SUMMER in Central City, Eureka Street bustles with opera company members, tourists and residents alike. Voices float through the windows of the Martin Foundry Rehearsal Hall, and the Festival Orchestra’s warm-ups spill onto the sidewalks. But 2020, for the most part, was quiet. Without the summer Festival, the town went about its daily business, waiting out the pandemic and hoping for music to fill the streets once again. However, this year-long intermission presented an opportunity for Central City Opera to tackle a long, ongoing to-do list of preservation projects on our 27 historic properties — and friends from past and present stepped in to help. Since the grand reopening of the Opera House in 1932, only World War II and the economic recession of 1982 kept the Opera from holding an annual summer Festival. Normally, the houses and administrative buildings are occupied by artists and staff from May through August, and time to work on renovations and general upkeep is

Friends from past and present stepped in to help hard to come by during the colder months. So, armed with a laundry list of ideas and several dozen gallons of paint, a group of Central City Opera staff and volunteers went to work. Central City Opera Music Director John Baril and Orchestra Personnel Co-Manager Brian Cook, together with renowned opera singers Emily Pulley and Jonathan Hays, both of whom are also past members of our Bonfils-Stanton Foundation Artists Training Program, formed a Central City “quarantine bubble” to live and work in the historic homes. Throughout the summer, they painted the interiors of six different properties, and Emily and Jonathan performed socially-distanced recitals in

“We completed projects on the properties that would normally have taken years” the Opera House Gardens for CCO Al Fresco, Central City Opera’s digital concert series. Both singers are based in New York City, but they offered up their time freely, preferring to spend the lockdown enjoying the mountain air, camaraderie and giving back to CCO. Bron Wright, carpenter and principal trombone player for the orchestra, rebuilt the crumbling porch on the front of D’Albe House, and volunteers from Mountain View Bank painted the fence in front of Parish House. Professional painters were hired to bring new life to the exteriors of Festival Hall, Bradford Press and the Parking Lot Houses. Flower Girl families restored a bench in the Opera House Gardens that was in need of some love. The Penrose Complex roof is now leak-free, thanks to new composite roof shingles and a grant provided by the Colorado State Historical Fund. A modern boiler system was installed in the famous Teller House, and students from the Colorado School of Mines partnered with our company to develop a strategy for possible engineering upgrades to the Opera

House in the future. Additional studies were conducted by Marx | Okubo, an outside consulting firm, on practical short and long-term improvements for the Opera House and Teller House. “In a few short months, we completed projects on the properties that would normally have taken years,” says Eric Chinn, Director of Historic Properties at Central City Opera. “The close friendships and beautiful music will resonate with me forever.” The cost of maintaining Central City Opera’s Victorian properties is never-ending, but dedicated donors and Guild members passionate about historic preservation have continued to steward the buildings for the next generation to enjoy. CAROUSEL | SYNOPSIS

STEP RIGHT UP! LOVE IS A WILD RIDE IN A MODEST BUT VIBRANT MAINE TOWN, spirited young millworkers Julie Jordan and Carrie Pipperidge venture to the beachfront carnival after a long day’s work. Rakish carousel barker Billy Bigelow immediately captures Julie’s attention. Also intrigued, Billy cajoles Julie to break from the crowd and walk with him. They’re drawn to one another like magnets, but neither can quite bring themself to verbalize their feelings. Starting that evening, they give everything to be together — jobs, friends, reputation — but soon their conflicting dreams build to a tragic breaking point. Meanwhile, Carrie giddily accepts a marriage proposal from ambitious fisherman Enoch Snow, so sunny and smitten that she’s hardly fazed when they can’t agree upon such crucial plans as how many children they’ll have.

Healing and redemption glimmer where they’re least expected. Years later, Julie is alone, raising a child as troubled as she is. In a turn of heavenly events, the wayward Billy gets a chance to make things right on the day of his daughter Louise’s graduation. Healing and redemption glimmer where they’re least expected.

RODGERS & HAMMERSTEIN’S

CAROUSEL

TIMELESS & TIMELY BY MARGARET SIEGRIST

Richard Rodgers once mused, Carousel “came very close to opera” PREMIERING ON BROADWAY IN 1945, Carousel was Rodgers and Hammerstein’s second collaboration. Hammerstein worried, “We’re such fools. No matter what we do, everyone is bound to say, ‘This is not another Oklahoma!,’” but Carousel proved an immediate smash hit with both critics and audiences. Time magazine even named it the best musical of the 20th century in 1999.

The show shares some interesting parallels with opera. Composers Giacomo Puccini and Kurt Weill both vied to write operas based on Liliom, the Hungarian play that inspired Carousel, but the author famously turned down both classical heavy-hitters before agreeing to let Rodgers and Hammerstein set it some years later. The duo made history exploring integration of music, dance,

Oklahoma! defined the course of American musical theater, but they aimed to improve on their vision in Carousel by focusing more on a moral than a mood. The piece is not through-sung like an opera, but it does incorporate longer sections of orchestral accompaniment. For instance, ongoing music defines the atmosphere and pace through the entire scene in which Julie and Billy fall for one another, including the duet “If I Loved You.” Rodgers once mused Carousel “came very close to opera.”

destructive, unhealthy relationship. Like many strong pieces of theater, it’s an opportunity to examine and discuss tough, prevalent issues. Rodgers said, “It may still be a tragedy, but it's a hopeful one because in the final scene it is clear that the child has at last learned how to express herself and communicate with others.”

Characterized by that chest-tingling, heart-in-throat attraction that’s almost impossible to put into words, the central love story between Julie and Billy immediately infatuates Carousel audiences. Their relatable connection makes it all the more heartbreaking when their marriage becomes physically and emotionally abusive. Carousel provides a striking look at two accessible characters in a

DIRECTOR’S NOTE: KEN CAZAN Carousel deals with subjects torn out of today’s headlines

IN A PANDEMIC, IN A WOKE WORLD, how does a production team make an older musical with controversial subject matter relevant? We struggled with this and finally decided that “less is more.” The first decision, once we found out that we were performing outside and in the light of day, was to update the piece, to set it in the here and now. There is a slight nod in the costumes to the original period, but overall, the clothing is very contemporary. As for a set, we decided to go with a more ethereal approach:

large banner-type panels with a faint skyscape and even fainter carousel horses. Heavenly stars are prominent throughout. Nothing is quite real. It is very much a story theatre perspective. Lighting is paramount to any production. In this case, because we are performing in an open-air space, in broad daylight for most of the performances, stage lighting is going to be minimal. The audience will be required to use their imagination for time of day reference.

ABOUT KEN BY MARGARET SIEGRIST This production approach, born out of necessity, puts all of the pressure on the actors and their abilities to create characters and relationships in this drastically reduced, socially distant version of Carousel. They will have to create the true magic. The show is cut down to its essence; 100 minutes of intense, focused slice-of-life instead of the original sprawling 2 hour and 45 minute epic about spousal abuse, survival, and ultimately, forgiveness. There are no actual dances, no interruptions so we are hurtled forward, wondering what will happen next and not given a reprieve to process what has happened and how we feel about the non-hero Billy, the defiant, tolerant Julie, Carrie and Mr. Snow and their larger-than-life marriage, the sociopathic Jigger and the wise businesswoman, Nettie. It is genuinely great drama with, arguably, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s best score and lyrics inspired by Ferenc Molnar’s play, Liliom, on which the musical is based.

NOW IN HIS 19TH SEASON with Central City Opera, Ken Cazan brings his trademark of intentional storytelling to Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Carousel. His modern and minimalistic approach to directing proves as practical as it is impactful. “I’ve always been a less is more person where set is concerned because I don’t want it to get in the way,” says Ken. His succinct use of scenery doesn’t diminish the drama in his productions, it distills it. “With a simpler set, it allows us to concentrate on the characters more, concentrate on the relationships.” Summer of 2019, Ken rendered the world of a 1797 British warship in a surrealistic dreamscape of rope, sails and projections for Central City Opera’s Colorado premiere of Benjamin Britten’s Billy Budd. In 2018, the mythological Acis and Galatea became a tale of love and loss within a group of hippies, as charming as it was moving. “I do like to provoke audiences to think and feel and talk about what they saw, what moved them, grabbed them.” Ken carved out a specialty in opera over the course of his career, but musicals were his first taste of the performing arts. He has directed nearly 200 productions spanning various genres and has brought together opera and musical theater many times for Central City Opera. Thanks to Ken’s vision, The Sound of Music, Oklahoma! and West Side Story, among others, thrilled audiences all over Colorado with incredible singing and spectacle. Also a passionate educator, Ken has served on the staff of Central City Opera’s Bonfils-Stanton Foundation Artists Training Program for many years and is Professor of Opera, Resident Stage Director and Chair of Vocal Arts at University of Southern California Thornton School of Music.

RIGOLETTO | SYNOPSIS

WHO WILL HAVE THE LAST LAUGH? A DEVILISH DUKE AND HIS TORTURED COURT JESTER, RIGOLETTO, CLASH in this topsy turvy suspense, teeming with twists of plot and twists of fate. The opera opens during an opulent party in the Duke of Mantua’s court. Rigoletto mocks courtiers as the Duke lavishes attention on their wives. They jeer back, swearing vengeance on the fool. Halting the festivities, the elder Count Monterone scorns the Duke for defiling his daughter. When Rigoletto taunts him as well, the Count declares a curse. Day by day, Monterone’s words eat away at the superstitious court jester. Gilda, hidden away from the world by her father Rigoletto, is only permitted to venture as far as the church. But she’s fallen in love with a man she believes to be a charming young student on the way to service. She bursts with hope for how love might expand her world. Later, a throng of courtiers steal Gilda away in retaliation for Rigoletto’s ridicule. Thinking she’s the fool’s mistress, they knavishly deliver her to the Duke’s bed. As the prank boils over, mistaken and misrepresented identities are revealed, and Rigoletto cowers under the curse. Gathering himself, the jester enlists killer-for-hire Sparafucile to avenge himself once and for all. A wild downpour wreaks confusion on Rigoletto’s plan. But this storm-stricken night will be someone’s last.

RIGOLETTO

ALL IN GOOD FUN BY MARGARET SIEGRIST

It challenges us to confront what makes us avert our eyes and what makes us stare. GIUSEPPE VERDI’S RIGOLETTO is a joke gone too far, set to some of the best-known melodies in all of classical music. One of twelve operas written together by Giuseppe Verdi and librettist Francesco Maria Piave, Rigoletto premiered in Venice in 1851 to immediate success. The plot is closely based upon Victor Hugo’s Le roi s’amuse, or “The King Amuses Himself,” a play harshly criticizing contemporary French society, thinly masked as historical fiction. Hugo’s play was swiftly banned by the government after only one performance in 1832. Though they ended up modifying some details, Verdi insisted on securing the material for an opera. He wrote in a letter to Piave, “Turn Venice upside down to make the censors permit this subject!”

RIGOLETTO

Some of Verdi’s best known works feature characters on the fringes of society brought into the spotlight. Some critics considered the storyline too dark, but the score was indisputably overflowing with musical hits. It’s said that Verdi kept the melody to the Duke’s aria “La donna è mobile” secret, even from the tenor singing the role, until just days before the performance, not wanting to unveil this inevitable public favorite until the premiere. As he’d predicted, the song was a sensation. Supposedly it could be heard hummed and whistled up and down the streets following opening night. In addition to his signature infectious tunes, Verdi also characterizes each major player in the plotline with unique music. The devil-may-care Duke’s music swaggers, carefree and upbeat. Gilda is easily identified by lovely, lilting melodies, as beautiful and innocent as she is. Accompaniment becomes dangerous, even ominous for the assassin, Sparafucile. Rigoletto’s music is tortured and restless, audibly haunted by Monterone’s curse.

Rigoletto brings a hunchbacked court jester out of the shadows. From the beginning, the Duke of Mantua is strikingly jovial in comparison with the brooding title character. Highlighting themes of class struggle and poverty, the opera shows Rigoletto’s persona, sharp-tongued and cruel in court, as an almost unrecognizable version of the devout and doting man he is at home with his daughter. The Duke takes life lightly because he has the means to do so, but Rigoletto constantly contorts in a simple attempt to get by. The opera also grapples with the factor of Rigoletto’s physical disability. People eagerly rely on him for quips and entertainment, but one minute they’re laughing with him, and the next they’re taunting him for a physical condition beyond his control. He lives a maddening paradox that challenges us to confront what makes us avert our eyes and what makes us stare.

Some of Verdi’s best known works feature characters on the fringes of society brought into the spotlight. Another famous collaboration with Piave, La traviata, stars a courtesan as its beloved heroine and namesake. In turn,

DIRECTOR’S NOTE: JOSE MARIA CONDEMI

“Contrasts and psychological paradoxes are the blood of good theater.” I CONSIDER VERDI’S RIGOLETTO a fascinating study in contrasts and contradictions. First, there is the world of the Duke of Mantua: licentious, decadent and glamorous. The Duke himself presides over feasts of pleasure in which women are treated as sexual objects while his corrupt retinue celebrates his excesses. Rigoletto's world is in sharp distinction: a sidekick who ostensibly caters to the Duke's vices but privately leads a simple, disciplined life. He also harbors a secret: Gilda, his young, chaste daughter whom he keeps sheltered from outside

influences with almost pathological zeal. At the start of the opera, these two worlds are seemingly disconnected, and Rigoletto appears to inhabit both successfully. But that stasis is in peril as, unbeknownst to Rigoletto, the Duke has already made an overture to Gilda. The delicate balance of the two worlds is thrown into chaos when we come into contact with a third environment: that of Sparafucile, the murderer for-hire with a ruthless dedication to the services he provides.

RIGOLETTO

ABOUT JOSE MARIA carmen, 2017. directed by jose maria condemi. photo by amanda tipton.

As for the contradictions, I find them particularly evident in the character of the Duke of Mantua. He is, undoubtedly, a first-rate womanizer who stops at nothing to secure his carnal pleasure. He also seems to lack a moral compass: when Count Monterone accuses him of defiling his daughter, the Duke not only laughs at the elder man but, worse, allows Rigoletto to publicly humiliate him. Yet, when it comes to expressing his newfound feelings for Gilda in his Act 2 aria, the Duke sings with unabashed tenderness and honest pathos. Verdi's music and Piave's words are unambiguous here; for a moment, we believe the Duke could be a nice guy! Still, in the last scene, he is back to his usual ways, and it appears the encounter with Gilda and the love he felt have done little to change the Duke's character. For our outdoor, abridged production with Central City Opera, I collaborated with scenic designer Steven C. Kemp and costume designer Edina Hiser to imagine an updated, contemporary setting in the form of a single playing space, containing and highlighting the three contrasting worlds at the center of the story. On the same stage we have the posh and decadent milieu of the Duke, the sheltered and idealized home of Gilda and Rigoletto and the gritty and dangerous hideout of Sparafucile and his sister Maddalena. The worlds co-exist in a delicate balance of tension, allowing the characters to move in and out of each space as the story requires, while also propelling them inexorably towards a dramatic conclusion. The contrasts and psychological paradoxes at the center of Rigoletto are the blood of good theater, and as a director, I look forward to spending time exploring Verdi’s thrilling opera this summer.

BY MARGARET SIEGRIST JOSE MARIA CONDEMI DIDN’T CHOOSE OPERA. Opera chose him. Growing up in a small town in Argentina, Jose Maria’s family was always artistically inclined. But opera didn’t come into his life until he heard the visceral, final duet from Carmen as he was walking down the streets of Buenos Aires one day. “I was familiar with classical music, and I played the piano,” says Jose Maria. “But opera was a new discovery.” He began studying theater at Teatro Colon Institute. “Just like opera came to me and took over my life, the same thing about stage directing.” Jose Maria continued his education at the prestigious Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music and was the first Adler Fellow with San Francisco Opera. Since then, he’s directed an eclectic range of repertoire across North America and abroad, consistently praised for his innovative approach. Throughout the years, he has maintained a presence as guest faculty for numerous high-profile training programs and is currently Director of Opera and Musical Theatre, as well as chair of the department, at San Francisco Conservatory of Music. Jose Maria’s work was last seen at Central City Opera for Carmen in 2017. He recalls that visiting Central City for the first time was a theatrical experience in and of itself. “I just remember feeling like I was in an opera set, La fanciulla del West maybe.” Opera is in the air here. Whether you experience performances on the main stage at Hudson Gardens in Littleton or in the Opera House Gardens in Central City, this art form might just captivate you on the spot like it did Jose Maria did back in Buenos Aires.

DIDO AND AENEAS | SYNOPSIS

Can humans’ passion weather their thirst for power?

WE ARE ALL BUT PLAYTHINGS OF THE GODS

SPRUNG FROM EPIC POETRY AND MYTH, Dido and Aeneas is a fascinating tale of power and passion between two formidable rulers and the Sorceress who toys with their fates. Love between Dido Queen of Carthage and the Trojan hero Aeneas unfolds as tempestuously as the storm that brought them together. Shipwrecked on the shores of Carthage, en route to Troy, Aeneas takes refuge in Dido’s

court. Attraction sparks quickly between the two political titans, but Dido is torn between desire and duty. At the advice of her Cupid-ish handmaid, Belinda, Dido finally, ardently agrees to Aeneas’ proposal of marriage. Just as the city and its queen settle into the bliss of the alliance, a conniving Sorceress rouses literal and political storms over Carthage, attempting to pry lover from lover and ruler from crown. DIDO AND AENEAS IN HISTORY & MYTH BY MARGARET SIEGRIST

Dido commands clear literary influence as an early female leader THOUGH ITS PLOT AND CHARACTERS are shrouded in legend, Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas cuts a clean, relatable narrative that resonates powerfully today.

DIDO ALSO KNOWN AS ELISSA, Dido’s origins trace from both history and mythology. The strongest account can be found in Virgil’s epic poem, The Aeneid. Regardless of whether she truly existed, she commands clear literary influence as an early female leader, and some sources even cite her as a goddess. Dido ruled over the North African city of Carthage, a crucial center for trade, widely regarded as one of the wealthiest cities in the ancient world. According to legend, she was not only the queen, but also the founder of this important settlement. Dido felt her responsibility to her people deeply, and they were equally dedicated to her.

DIDO AND AENEAS

AENEAS Also known primarily from Virgil’s epic poem, Aeneas was a prince and hero of Troy descended from the goddess Venus. He appears in Greek mythology, making a cameo in the Iliad, but is more prominent in Roman tradition, where he features as an important ancestor of Romulus and Remus. Aeneas’ place in the founding of Rome propels his role in lore, taking precedence over his character trajectory and relationships. His concession to abandon love for Troy at the word of the gods is one of many examples in which the canon of Rome pervades Aeneas’ story.

Composer Henry Purcell and librettist Nahum Tate apply distinct perspective to their setting of Dido and Aeneas. Introducing the Sorceress, a supernatural force neither mortal nor divine, redefines the stakes in the eyes of the audience. The narrative then explores the interplay of attraction and obligation between two political titans, rather than focusing on their resignation to fate. Purcell and Tate plant a spirit disguised as Mercury, not a real god, to command Aeneas to leave Carthage and his queen. Though the messenger is false, Aeneas’ loyalties are revealed. Heartbroken, Dido is left imploring her people to remember her for her former glory, not the tragic fallout.

A supernatural force, neither mortal nor divine, redefines the stakes in the eyes of the audience Originally, Tate based the text of the opera on his play Brutus of Alba (The Enchanted Lovers), which accounts for some divergence from myth. It’s also likely that the opera was intended more symbolically than literally. Based on the librettist’s letters, scholars speculate that the opera allegorizes the “sorcery” of the Roman Catholic Church leading James II astray from the English people, as Aeneas is pulled away from Dido. By taking liberties with the myth, Tate and Purcell created a deeply human drama that was meaningful in their time and also seamlessly adapts to our own.

DIRECTOR’S NOTE: DAN WALLACE MILLER

“An early operatic masterpiece conceived in broad primary colors” COMPOSER HENRY PURCELL’S ONLY FULL-LENGTH OPERA, DIDO AND AENEAS, is an early operatic masterpiece conceived in broad primary colors. Love strikes hard and fast, enmity flourishes at the simplest provocation, and, before you know it, tragedy erupts where tranquility was a second before. Before Dido and Aeneas, Purcell was primarily a composer of “theater music,” songs and dances that would be added as supplement to pre-existing plays. These songs were sung by ancillary characters who would channel the thoughts and emotions of the principal performers for these asides. With Dido, Purcell had the opportunity to use his music to directly inhabit and affect a story, a story where emotion is placed paramount and immediate.

Originally written to be performed at a girls’ boarding school, Dido and Aeneas is a story filled with adolescent fervor. Each emotion our lovers feel arises swiftly with the utmost sincerity, accompanied by some of the most moving and delicate music Purcell ever wrote. This angst, however, isn’t a detriment to the piece; it is essential. The tragedy of the opera is not just Dido’s fate, but rather, how rash and ill-considered it is. It’s through this lens that we’re approaching this masterwork at Central City Opera. We watch as a group of young people spontaneously put on a show to explore their own emotions by performing the emotions of others, and we see the repercussions of play and performance unexpectedly invading reality.

ABOUT DAN BY MARGARET SIEGRIST

rave reviews from The Seattle Times, “For those who think opera is an antique, elitist art form with no connection to our own time, here is a show to change your mind,” and The Stranger, “A profound experience of theater.” In 2021, he even endeavored into directing for film on Seattle Opera’s star-studded, streamable production of Tosca.

Dan Wallace Miller is making a name for himself as a sharp, young director mounting operas in diverse venues ranging from large theaters to non-traditional spaces. Known for fresh interpretations of older repertoire, Dan is a natural fit for Dido and Aeneas this Festival season. Dan is known for pushing the boundaries of standard dramatic presentation. As Founder and Artistic Director of Vespertine Opera Theater, he’s been applauded for “Making opera unfamiliar again in all the best ways” (The Stranger). With Vespertine, Dan headed the U.S. premiere of Benjamin Britten’s adaptation for two pianos of Les mamelles de Tirésias (Francis Poulenc), the English opera staple The Rape of Lucretia (Benjamin Britten) and Heart Mountain (Sarah Mattox), a special commission based on stories from a Japanese internment camp. Whether he’s championing rarely-seen works, interpreting classics with modern flair or producing new opera, Dan infuses performances with his own distinctive voice. Also at home in established theaters, Dan works with Seattle Opera regularly and has held the position of Assistant Director in Residence with the company. There, he’s helped bring to life both historical and contemporary repertoire. In 2017, he tackled The Combat, an enthusiastically-received update to Monteverdi’s 1600s opera Il combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda. Described as an “immersive baroque pastiche,” the piece nabbed

Each season Central City Opera presents at least one piece outside the Opera House, often playing within the walls of the company’s many historic properties, local churches or rehearsal rooms. As part of this year’s outdoor Festival, Dido and Aeneas comes to the Opera House Gardens, a lush and charming space tucked between the Teller House and our beloved jewel-box theater in Central City. It’s rare that the company would mount a production in the Gardens. But with the clear mountain air and intimate seating, the gods are smiling on this idyllic theater opportunity born of safety necessity. In the hands of Dan Wallace Miller, Dido and Aeneas is sure to be a close encounter with myth and drama like none other.

REMEMBERING JUDY GRANT

CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD JUDITH W. GRANT April 5, 1944 – June 15, 2020

A tireless worker and model of integrity and grace, Judy will be remembered for her effervescent optimism and laughter that affected all those who knew her. JUDY JOINED THE CENTRAL CITY OPERA BOARD of Directors in 2002 and assumed the Chairmanship from 2018–2020. She was a gracious representative of the organization in all she did. She loved to show off all that Central City Opera had to offer, and we were lucky to have her dedication and commitment guiding this organization.

66

C e n t r a l

C i t y

O p e r a

She also served on the boards for Denver Botanic Gardens, Sweet Briar College, Reach Out and Read Colorado, Mesa Verde Foundation, Denver Debutante Ball, St. Anne's Episcopal School, Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association and Coors Western Art Show. In addition to her dedicated philanthropic work, Judy was a passionate educator for many years.

Judy’s Letter from the Chairman Written for the 2020 Festival Program (abridged)

We hear it all the time, “Central City Opera is unique.” “Once you’ve seen opera here, you won’t want to see it any other way.” But what really makes our opera company different? What creates that special experience that so many people acknowledge? The jewel box Opera House. The stunning location. The thrill of the productions.

What holds the magic for you? A tireless worker and model of integrity and grace, Judy will be remembered for her effervescent optimism and laughter that affected all those who knew her. She greeted everyone with a bright smile and warm embrace. Judy was a dear friend who will be greatly missed.

The high standards that Central City Opera has always stood for have not wavered. Unique in a world where compromise and corner-cutting is seen everywhere, even encouraged. In our close-up opera experiences, every detail must be handled with care. And then, every so often... A miracle occurs. A show that many thought could never be produced on our small stage, or in the constraints of a historical theater, proves to be a triumph on every score. At intermission, you hear, “I cannot believe what I am seeing and hearing. How do they do this?” This is the kind of magic you can witness at Central City Opera. Yes, we are unique. And proud of it.

I am so pleased and grateful that you have chosen to share the magic.

IN 2020, THE ANNUAL FUNDRAISER hosted by the Central City Opera Guild was shifted from an in-person weekend of events and festive home tours to a digital experience. It included a live Zoom panel of interior designers hosted by CBS4’s Lauren Whitney and a video tour of the historic Fisher Mansion with performances from Central City Opera Touring Artists. Thanks to the sponsorship of Sanctuary Wealth Advisors and a number of other generous businesses and organizations, donations culminated in almost $60,000.

YELLOW ROSE LEGACY GIVING

LEAVING A LEGACY JANE A. HULTIN (1942-2020)

family photos courtesy of paul hultin. right: one of jane’s favorite opera experiences, 2014. featuring baritone michael mayes. photo by mark kiryluk.

...by naming us in her will, she made an enormous and lasting difference for our company. WE AT CENTRAL CITY OPERA KNEW JANE AS AN OPTIMISTIC, HARD-WORKING VOLUNTEER OF 15 YEARS. When she came into the office, it was next to impossible to stop chatting and laughing with her over the filing cabinets. Jane loved bringing new people, young and old, to the opera each summer. We’re proud that, according to her family, Jane’s love for opera began right here at Central City Opera shortly after she first moved to Colorado in the ‘70s. Those who knew Jane remember her for her five passions: traveling the world, her master gardening prowess, her sweet dogs, her friends, and of course, opera.

In addition to volunteering at Central City Opera right up until 2020, Jane gave moderately and consistently for many years. But by naming us in her will, she made an enormous and lasting difference for our company. Jane’s estate is now the second largest contribution to our endowment, which will ensure that Central City Opera is able to endure long into the future.

2020-2021 FLOWER GIRLS

A Colorado Tradition THIS CENTRAL CITY OPERA TRADITION began in 1932 at the grand re-opening of the Opera House. Anne Evans and Ida Kruse McFarlane founded Central City Opera House Association and launched a summer music festival, bringing world-class theatrical and opera artists to the stage — a tradition that continues to this day. Two young ladies, Nancy Kountze and Elaine Oakes, were presented as the first Flower Girls. They often watched the rehearsals of the inaugural production of the play Camille and were asked to pass out nosegays to members of the audience at intermission. Today, young women from

In the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, Central City Opera was forced to postpone the 2020 Festival. Before this, only World War II and the economic recession of 1982 had kept the company from stage. Following this unprecedented year, we proudly celebrate two classes of Flower Girls in 2021, a distinguished group of young women whose presentation marks yet another momentous event in our company’s history.

HEALTH AND SAFETY GUIDELINES Our top priority is the health and safety of our patrons, performers and company members. We ask for assistance in creating the safest environment possible in order to produce the 2021 Festival. • • •

Although we are performing outside, we ask that all audience members wear facemasks except while actively eating or drinking. This also includes patrons who have received the COVID-19 vaccine. If you do not have a mask with you, you will be provided with one. Masks must fit properly and cover the mouth and nose. Please follow physical distancing guidance.
