Now in its 14th season, the US Open Series links seven hard-court WTA and ATP World Tour tournaments to the US Open. Since its inception in 2004, the US Open Series has centralized the way tennis is viewed in the U.S. and has been responsible for the introduction of cutting-edge innovations in the sport, from blue tennis courts and instant replay technology to a cohesive schedule that allows for “appointment television.” The US Open Series also provides tennis with an unprecedented platform for growing the game at the community and the professional levels.

For five consecutive weeks in mid-summer, the US Open Series enables tennis fans to watch the game’s top players and rising talents compete in tournaments from coast to coast before arriving in New York for the showcase championship of the season, the US Open. As such, the Series helps develop the next generation of stars by making it possible for them to go head to head with the tours’ highest-ranked players and by often serving as a springboard to elevate their games to the next level.

If You Can’t Say Something Nice… Tennis legend Margaret Court, 74, came under fire in May for saying that tennis is “full of lesbians.” Players and fans across the sport have called for Margaret Court Arena, home to the Australian Open, to be renamed by next year’s event.

For a Good Cause In a Zurich charity match in April, Britain’s Andy Murray let his ball boy serve the match point against Roger Federer. The boy gave it two failed attempts before handing the racquet back to Murray.
Canadian player Genie Bouchard, 22, made good on a bet with a fan who asked her for a date via Twitter during the Super Bowl. The terms? If the New England Patriots came back to defeat the Atlanta Falcons after being down 21–3. The Patriots rallied and 10 days later, 20-year-old student John Goehrke was sitting courtside with the Sports Illustrated swimsuit model at a Brooklyn Nets NBA game.

Used Car for Sale Looking to sell his blue 2015 BMW F80 M3, Aussie player Nick Kyrgios posted a pic of the luxury-loaded vehicle with an invitation to “anyone that is seriously interested” to message him for more information. Not surprisingly, the post garnered more sarcastic quips than “serious” interest.
Things got a little hot and heavy during Maxime Hamou’s firstround exit interview at the French Open in May. The 21-year-old Frenchman leaned in to smooch female journalist Maly Thomas not once, not twice, but three times on her head while she interviewed him on live TV. Thomas was visibly uncomfortable with the amorous attention, and Hamou is now banished from the French Open.

OH BABY! Serena Williams let the news slip about her bun in the oven via Snapchat with a sideways selfie in April. Williams had been tracking her growing belly with personal pics and accidentally made the photo public. The post was removed quickly, but not before the internet went abuzz. Williams says she found out about the pregnancy with fiancé and Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian two days before the Australian Open in January—which she won. Yes, while pregnant.

Can Tennis Embrace Change? WE’LL FIND OUT AFTER THIS YEAR’S US OPEN, WHERE SEVERAL INNOVATIONS WILL TEST OUT NEW RULES WITH THE HOPE OF SPEEDING UP THE GAME. BY MEGAN FERNANDEZ
CLOTHING CHANGE (US Open only) Organizers—and broadcasters—hate it when players disappear for 10 or 15 minutes to change out of sweaty clothes, leaving fans hanging. Millennials, in particular, won’t tolerate this period of boredom, says Stacey Allaster, USTA chief executive of professional tennis. Clothing changes will be limited to five minutes, or more if the changing facility isn’t located close to the court.
FREE-MOVEMENT POLICY (Next Gen only) Fans will be allowed to come and go from the stadium during play, anywhere except behind the baseline, encouraging a more relaxed atmosphere.
KEY US OPEN This year’s tournament will test these changes during qualifying rounds of all events to assess whether to implement any of them in 2018.

PLAYING LETS (Next Gen only) Serves that touch the net cord and land in will be live balls. This rule is already in play in WorldTeam Tennis.
ATP NEXT GEN FINALS The inaugural tournament in November, for elite players 21 or younger, will feature unconventional rules.

1912 & 1922: The U.S. National Championships (now the US Open) and Wimbledon eliminate the Challenge Round.
NO-AD SCORING (Next Gen only) After deuce, the next point—played on the side of the court the receiver chooses—wins the game.
1925: The French Championships (now the French Open) allows players from outside of French tennis clubs to compete.
1958: The Foot Fault rule now allows one or both feet off the ground during a serve, as long as the feet do not go over the baseline.
1968: At the dawn of the Open Era, prize money is awarded for the first time.

OFF THE COURT SERVE CLOCK (both events) Grand Slam tournaments allow 20 seconds between points. Most players take between 22 and 28, according to Allaster. This isn’t a guess—the USTA and ESPN have measured it. The USTA and Next Gen Finals will bump it up to 25 and enforce the rule with a clock that fans can see. It will be controlled by the chair umpire, who will have complete discretion to pause or restart the clock for a reasonable interruption or after a long rally.
FOUR-GAME SETS (Next Gen only) This is designed to increase the number of pivotal moments in a match. A best-of-five format will ensure that the number of games required to win a match (12) stays the same as it is in a traditional best-of-three match.
COACHING (both events) Coaching is forbidden at Grand Slams and men’s ATP matches. (The women’s WTA tournaments, including the Western & Southern Open, allow on-court coaching.) “The reality is, [illegal] coaching is happening,” Allaster says. “We take the position that coaches are an instrumental part of the show.” To bring that element into the entertainment of a match, coaches will be permitted to advise players from their seats at certain times in the match. The results—did the player follow instructions?— would give commentators talking points. Expect this to be controversial.
WARM-UP CLOCK (both events) Another time-suck? Players dawdling at their benches before warm up, wrapping a grip, or taking extra serves after time is called. “We’ve seen a creepage in the amount of time this takes,” Allaster says. Miami Open winning streak One of the most curious footnotes in the Venus and Serena story took place right in their backyard, at the Miami Open. They dominated the event from 1998 through 2004, with each of the sisters winning three titles. Venus (who skipped the 2000 tournament) won a record 22 consecutive matches in Key Biscayne until Serena beat her in 2002. Serena won 21 consecutive matches until Venus beat her in 2005—preventing her younger sister from tying her record.
Venus has climbed back to the top three times over the last 10 years. Serena nearly fell out of the top 200 twice. Both overcame serious medical conditions to continue competing. Slow clap.

Serve speed I n 2007, Venus set the record for the fastest serve in women’s tennis, at 129 mph. Sabine Lisicki broke it in 2014, hitting 131.
Venus’s rankings dropped to 137 in February 2012 after she was diagnosed with Sjogren’s Syndrome. Her comeback included five quarterfinals in 10 events, her 44th WTA title, and Olympic gold in doubles with Serena.
Education Serena has studied for a cosmetology certification, and both of the sisters have taken design classes. Only Venus has a bachelor’s degree.
In 2013, Venus slid to No. 60 after a back injury caused her to miss Wimbledon for the first time. Despite continuing to struggle with Sjogren’s, her ranking climbed.

» My brothers and I grew up playing tennis together and against each other. Ethan went to a rival college and our teams played each other. I also played for the undergrad team during my fi rst year of law school.
» [The tournament] grows every year—between the grounds, the number of volunteers, and the number of patrons. It’s totally different from when I was little. » I remember ball boying for some Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi matches in the ’90s and they were some of the most amazing matches and I got to be on the court. Best seat in the house. » I like teaching the new kids how to be a ball boy. We have two tryouts every summer and I run it every year.

» I used to play a lot [of tennis]. I haven’t picked up a racquet in a few years. » Years ago, there was a challenger tournament to get into the qualifier tournament. And we used to have a couple nights of Senior Tennis with tennis “oldies” like Nastase, Laver, and Rosewall.
» Once, Andy Roddick asked for Ethan’s car keys to play a joke on him. He wanted to put a fish in his car. I nixed that. It was a new car. Jason got to play a tie-breaker with Richard Krajicek as his partner against the Bryan Brothers on Center Court in between night matches. » I love working with kids. Many of the ballkids are siblings of kids from past years. And many of our adult volunteers had their own kids with us. Some of the kids started when they were 12 and they’re still volunteering into their late ’20s and ’30s.
» I grew up playing tennis, traveling every weekend. But good is relative. Was I good compared to other college players? No. Compared to the kids I taught tennis to? Yes, very good. » The tournament has changed, the size and the amount of people. It has become a travel destination for people around the world. » Roger Federer and Andy Roddick were always so good to us and that’s an understatement. But overall the best experience was when Devin McCarthy, a locker room attendant since the beginning of time, played in the qualifiers. » I get to interact with players like no one else does. I’ve been fortunate to form legitimate relationships with some of them.

ONE OF CINCINNATI’S FAVORITE LOCAL BANDS, THE SUNBURNERS, REENTERS THE SPOTLIGHT AT THIS YEAR’S OPEN. TELL US ABOUT THE FORMATION OF YOUR BAND. The core of The SunBurners
is made up of classically trained percussionists (yes, no joke!) who met while studying together at NKU a while back. We are all drummers at heart, which actually makes the group a lot tighter musically. When we started out in 2012, we took a look at the Cincinnati music scene and saw a void in the “island party music” area and decided to step up. IN YOUR OWN WORDS, DESCRIBE THE BAND. “Island Party Entertainment on
demand” is the band's motto, and we are dedicated to delivering top-notch music wherever we go. The SunBurners is one of the hardest working bands in Cincinnati (at least during the warmer months). When the colder weather blows in, we jump on our luxury Party Yacht and head down to Florida and the Caribbean for a few months each year. Our playlist represents an eclectic blend of genres, with island twists on all the party band favorites. It’s best to check us out live to see what we’re all about. DO YOU DO ANYTHING SPECIAL FOR THE OPEN? Before taking the stage, we check out all of the latest trends in tennis fashion so we know exactly what to wear. We also brush up on our tennis skills prior to The Open. Mike (drum set) and Scotty (steel drums) have an annual high-speed serve competition each year, which always reminds the band to stick to music and leave the tennis to the pros. WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT THE WESTERN & SOUTHERN OPEN EXPERIENCE? We love the community atmosphere that the Western & Southern
Open generates. The tournament brings people from all over the world, including a number of SunBurners fans who we only get to see us once a year at The Open. It’s a great place to hang all week! BESIDES PERFORMING AT THE OPEN, WHERE ELSE CAN WE SEE YOU?
The SunBurners perform for a lot of community concert series and festivals. We are also the house band at Coney Island’s Sunlite Pool—playing poolside every Sunday throughout the summer. Aside from public shows, we work a lot as private entertainment for weddings, corporate retreats, and other private parties, bringing island party entertainment wherever we go!

ODAY MADDIE IS A BRIGHT-EYED 4-YEAR-OLD
who loves swim lessons and karate. Just a few short years ago, however, this vivacious little girl faced the biggest challenge of her life. Ashley and David knew something was wrong when Maddie couldn’t seem to stay healthy. They began to worry as the symptoms kept piling up—fevers, bruising, fatigue. Then, one Friday afternoon in the fall of 2015, Maddie was diagnosed with strep. By Monday morning she showed little sign of improvement, so Ashley took her back to see the doctor. Ashley worried that she was overreacting to a minor illness, but a follow-up blood test revealed the unthinkable: Maddie had leukemia. “It was the worst day of our lives,” Ashley says. That was the beginning of four intense rounds of chemotherapy, which required Maddie to stay at Cincinnati Children’s for five long months. Ashley and

David will never forget the care their daughter received. “Bringing Maddie to Cincinnati Children’s was a no brainer for us,” Ashley says. “We’re blessed to have one of the best oncology programs in the country right here in Cincinnati.” Maddie’s cancer has been in remission for more than a year. Soon—when it’s been five years from her original diagnosis, and she’s been cancer-free for at least two years—her follow-up care will be managed through the Cancer Survivorship Center at Cincinnati Children’s. Kids treated for cancer face elevated risks for certain complications as they grow up, things like infertility and secondary cancers. The experts in the Survivorship Center help them stay healthy by managing those risks. When it was established 25 years ago, the center was one of the first of its kind in the United States. Today, Cincinnati Children’s cares for more than 1,800 survivors of all ages, empowering them to lead long, healthy lives.
