NotesFromthePro By: Robert Loper PNCC Head Golf Professional A suspension of play for a dangerous situation will be signaled by 1 long air horn blast. All play shall cease immediately upon notification. All practice areas will be closed during suspension of play until committee has declared them open. Signaled by 2 short consecutive horn blasts. We are in the throws of the summer heat! Please be prepared for the heat and humidity Drink plenty of fluids before and during your round Please do not take chances! If you are feeling poorly, come off the course immediately and get in a cool environment It is every player’s responsibility to rake the bunker after playing out of them The excuse that the bunkers are not in good shape, or a rake is not within 10 feet of me are not valid When entering in a bunker, please enter and exit at or near the lowest point of the bunker Yes, this may not be the closest point to your ball, but you will not leave deep footprints in the faces of the bunkers and will then make it easier to properly rake In the event of hazardous weather conditions, it is the responsibility of individual golfers to decide whether or not to continue play Players should consider the predicted weather conditions and information they may get from the Pro Shop We encourage players to “Put Your Personal Safety First!” The course restroom shelters on Holes 6 and 13 are equipped with lightning rod protection and offer a safe haven for players who suspend play in their vicinity During Club sponsored events, including MGA and LGA events, the Pro Shop will suspend play if it believes players’ safety may be jeopardized by hazardous weather During Club events players will be notified as follows: Discontinuance of Play for Dangerous Situation: Resumption of Play:

This summer has continued to fly by It is hard to believe it is already August 2022 Some recap of the month of July from golf course maintenance, it was a very busy and very important month for the maintenance team We completed Aeration Week! We got asked a lot why do you have to aerify? Fairways and tees total number of holes punched in the turf 53,980,000 cores + we did not count all the holes We were able to inject over 60,000 pounds of sand into the greens and added another 40,000 after we verticut the greens. Total of 100,000 pounds of sand.

Timing Is Everything: We aerate when the grass is healthy and actively growing Doing it during this time minimizes damage and allows for a quick return to optimal playing conditions

This year we did a Dry Jet where sand was injected into the greens We were really pleased with this process We were able to inject 60,000 lbs of sand into the greens From the picture below, you can see the white sand be injected and creating channels through the green’s profile Going forward, we will try to have the jet dry process done every year

Just a few numbers: It was a long week but most all of our goals were achieved We had great weather and the only washout day was Friday the 15th It seems like after the 15th it has rained a lot For the month of August, we will mostly be doing normal course maintenance. Hopefully, everyone has had a great summer and has been able to get out and enjoy the course. See you out on the course! We Aerate to Improve: The putting greens receive more traffic than any other playing surface. the aeration process helps relieve compaction caused by traffic. It also helps create a firm, smooth playing surface by controlling thatch and healthy turfgrass roots

POST | GOLF PAGE 18

TurfNotes

By: Chris Parham, PNCC Golf Course Superintendent

Removing Thatch: Thatch is a layer of living and dead plant material that accumulates at the soil surface. If the thatch on the putting greens is not diluted by aeration and topdressing, the thatch will act like a sponge, holding water near the surface Too much thatch creates soft playing conditions, inconsistent green speeds and increases the risk for turf disease Added Sand: A heavy application of sand following aeration may appear to make putting greens less playable However, filling the holes with sand actually helps create a smoother surface. Sand also creates channels for water and air movement, dilutes thatch and helps putting greens recover from aeration quickly.

Porters Neck CC will be participating in the MCG Annual Ryder Cup at the Reserve Golf Club in Pawleys Island, SC. A team will consist of 7 members plus 1 Professional. The event will consist of 3 different formats, Texas Scramble, Fourball and Singles. Qualifying will be the week of August 8 14 Players may choose to play on any day and can only attempt once All players will play from the WHITE tees We will take the 5 lowest scores and the rest will be placed on a wait list based on score 2 players will be Captain’s picks to fill out the team Players must announce their intention to qualify before your round and turn in a signed and attested scorecard Please contact the Pro Shop with any questions

This summer marked the first Junior Golf Association in club history Just like the MGA and LGA, our kids got to experience course time with friendly competition The JGA was designed to be a little bit more laid back than Operation 36, allowing students to play from different yardages and learn to hit every club in their bag Mainly their driver The picture below illustrates two students reading a putt during a Captain Choice event. Although golf is traditionally an individual sport, JGA team events allow students to learn from one another and build communication skills in a productive manner. As we enter our final week of the JGA, nothing has pleased me more to see friendships blossom, students staying after weekly class and begging their parents to stay on the range for another thirty minutes We had a great class this summer and can not wait to see what next year brings! during their singles match. Tee times will start at 12:00pm.
