The Lindisfarne Gospels are a magnificent example of medieval craftsmanship. This beautifully illustrated manuscript was produced in around 700 AD on the island monastery at Lindisfarne (Holy Island) and over 1000 years later will return to the region, forming the centrepiece of an exhibition on Durham’s UNESCO World Heritage Site from 1 July to 30th September 2013. Northumberland will be celebrating the Gospel’s return with a calendar of events throughout 2013. Dedicated to the North East’s most famous saint, Cuthbert, Eadfrith the artist scribe created a beautiful book representing the golden age of design and craftsmanship in Northumbria. Written in latin, with a word-by-word translation into the Old English added in the 10th century – the Lindisfarne Gospels are the oldest surviving translation of the gospels into the English language. After Cuthbert died the Lindisfarne Gospels and his remains were kept safe by travelling across the North East and parts of Cumbria and Yorkshire before being laid to rest on Dun Holm, now the site of Durham Cathedral. Northumberland wasn’t
remote enough
Many people now come to Northumberland to get away from it all, but in the 600s even Holy Island, a 5 mile walk across dangerous tidal sands wasn’t remote enough for St Cuthbert. He lived with only the puffins for company on the treacherous Farne Islands and was even known to spend nights praying in the freezing cold North Sea! You’ll be glad to know our accommodation is cosier these days, but you can see where St Cuthbert lived and the places his followers visited as they fled bloody Viking raids with the priceless Lindisfarne Gospels and Cuthbert’s still ‘incorrupt’ body over 100 years after his death. If you still want more of St Cuthbert after that, you could take a walk to St Cuthbert’s Cave, then travel on to visit the rather grand St Cuthbert’s Church, Norham, our very own ‘Durham Cathedral’. Pick up (or download) a copy of the ‘Footsteps of the Saints’ trail for more ideas in this area. Further west in beautiful Redesdale there are more mediaeval St Cuthbert’s Churches (he was a popular chap) in Bellingham, Corsenside and Elsdon - each with its own special charm.

Cuthbert probably went to school at the monastery St Aidan had already established on Lindisfarne, and when he was 15 fought with King Oswald’s army to protect Bamburgh Castle. He would have visited St Aidan’s Church, Bamburgh which has an atmospheric interior, dramatic windows and memorials to Victorian heroine Grace Darling. Archaeologists are still working around Bamburgh Castle to uncover secrets of this ‘golden age’. It was probably the Romans who first brought Christianity into the region, evidence of this has been found at the ongoing excavations at Roman Vindolanda. Roman stones were re-used in the building of many churches in this area – you can see a complete Roman arch inside St Andrew's Church, Corbridge and more Roman evidence at Hexham Abbey. Later in 627, Bishop Paulinus spent 36 days baptizing the local community in the River Glen, near the Anglo-Saxon site of Ad Gefrin, the palace of Northumbrian Warrior King Edwin and within the shadow of the once-sacred hilltop of Yeavering Bell. Nearby in the Church of St Gregory the Great, Kirknewton you can see an ancient stone carving of the Adoration of the Magi, apparently wearing kilts! When Oswald, saint and king, fought to regain his father’s kingdom at the Battle of Heavenfield (near Chollerford), he set up a cross to show he fought as a Christian. Here the tiny St Oswald’s Church, high on the ridge followed by Hadrian’s Wall, is the starting point for the 97 mile St Oswald’s Way. This leads back to Holy Island via Warkworth on the coast.

St Lawrence’s Church, Warkworth is a splendid mediaeval church solidly built as a place of refuge during those turbulent times. There’s a pleasant riverside walk from here towards the unusual Warkworth Hermitage nearby. Inland, St Michael’s Church, Alnwick is one of the architectural gems of Northumberland, and Alnwick’s Inspired Heritage is an absorbing town trail covering Catholic, Methodist and other churches in the town. Visit Northumberland today and you’ll find beauty, peace and tranquillity - but don’t be fooled. Since before the coming of the Romans almost 2,000 years ago this land has been violently fought over. The greatest evidence of this is, of course, the magnificent remains of Hadrian’s Wall and the many majestic stone castles and forts dotting the landscape. Look closer and you’ll see the Pele Towers and Bastle Houses of the Border Reivers, a ruthless breed of fighters and marauders whose clans ruled Northumberland and whose names are still proudly born by many of our local families. Battlefields also abound, including Otterburn where Shakespeare’s Hotspur was captured, and the most famous of all - Flodden, marking its 500th anniversary in 2013. In 1513 the blood of 14,000 men stained the moors and King James IV of Scotland was killed - an event still well remembered in poetry and ballads. The Vikings also raided our coasts, attacking the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, slaughtering the monks who fled with the bones of St Cuthbert and the celebrated Lindisfarne Gospels. Even in relatively modern times monuments such as Berwick-upon-Tweed’s ramparts - the only intact Elizabethan town walls remaining in England - and the houses and inventions of local Victorian industrialists demonstrate the endurance of Northumberland’s historic spirit. The year 2013 marks the 500th anniversary of the Battle of Flodden, fought between the crowns of England and Scotland on a hillside in north Northumberland.

It was a battle of national significance. By the evening of 9th September 1513 the Scottish King, James IV, lay dead, along with 100 of his nobles and 15,000 Scottish and English men, women and children. It was the last time a British monarch died on the battlefield at the head of his army. The outcome influenced the course of history, both in Europe and within these islands; the Union of the Crowns of Scotland and England taking place exactly 90 years later. In the Scottish Borders and north Northumberland, the battle is keenly remembered and today forms the basis of traditions that still drive aspects of life, such as the Common Riding festivals in the border towns. It spawned legend and literature, remembered not least through Sir Walter Scott’s epic poem ‘Marmion’. A few years ago, thoughts turned to the approaching 500th anniversary of Flodden, sparking discussions about its importance in our history and the wish to commemorate the occasion in a fitting way. Communities from both sides of the border have come together to inspire the creation of the Flodden 1513 Ecomuseum and a programme of projects and events to mark the passing of 500 years. Flodden 1513 Ecomuseum links together 12 sites in north Northumberland, the Scottish Borders and Edinburgh which have an intimate connection to the story of Flodden. Chef Rhian Cradock has an impressive foodie background since doing work experience at the then Michelinstarred 21 Queen St. He then worked at numerous awardwinning restaurants and with some of the best Michelin starred chefs in the country. His collection of recipe books lines the pub walls and you can often find the chefs consulting these during their breaks. The food is founded on classical French cooking, but with an unmistakeable regional style that comes from caring deeply about where food comes from. Menus provide lots of
information about the source of the food, down to the farm on which their meat is raised, and pictures of the suppliers adorn the walls of the pub. There is also an impressive wine list and as a free house, The Feathers has the flexibility to serve interesting local beers and soft drinks, and to change their offer frequently using the wide range of micro breweries from across the whole North East region. Rhian says: “It is my belief that the best quality ingredients have always been available in the North of England. I use these to create a menu where seasonal, locally produced fresh food and drink are key. That’s why the menu changes every day and I try to provide choices to suit every taste. The people of the North East are passionate about their region and that includes the food but we need to let people know about this outside the region. My aim is to create great dishes which are presented simply with high quality yet relaxed service. I always try to showcase the great producers in the region. It is my belief that we should be as proud of our food as we are of our heritage and our football teams.”

Salad of wood pigeon, Feathers Inn black pudding, Northumbrian bacon and beetroot Serves 4 Ingredients
- 4 pigeon breasts, skinned and boned - 100 grams Feathers Inn black pudding (or other good quality black pudding), diced into 1cm cubes - 4 rashers of dry cured Northumbrian bacon, grilled till crisp - 300 grams of watercress, washed and dried - 1 small shallot, finely diced - 1 tablespoon finely chopped soft herbs (parsley, chives, tarragon) - 2 large beetroot wrapped in tin foil and baked, peeled then diced - Salad dressing (rapeseed oil, Dijon mustard, cider vinegar, thyme)
Method Pan fry the breasts in a little rapeseed oil till brown on the outside and pink in the middle, about 3 mins. Allow to rest in a warm place for about 2 mins. Mix together the herbs, watercress, shallot and beetroot with a little dressing. Warm the black pudding under the grill. Thinly slice the pigeon breasts and spread over the salad leaves. Crumble the black pudding and the bacon over the top. Deglaze the pigeon breast pan with a little salad dressing and pour over the watercress and herb leaves.

Of all Northumberland’s attractions, the most exciting and diverse is our wonderful countryside. Much of Northumberland is protected landscape, we have the least-visited National Park in the country and not one but two Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Northumberland is a large county and visitors are amazed by how the countryside changes, from the rugged, often deserted beaches of the Northumberland Coast, across wildlife filled moorland, along the rolling hills of the Tyne Valley and Hadrian’s Wall Country, to the uplands of the Cheviots and the deer-filled forests of Kielder Water & Forest Park.
Northumberland Coast AONB Covering 39 miles of coastline from Berwick to the Coquet Estuary, the Northumberland Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty contains some of the most dramatic coastal scenery in the country. As well as sweeping sandy beaches, dunes full of wildlife and rugged, rocky cliffs, visitors can also uncover evidence of over 7,000 years of human habitation and activity. This is one of the best parts of Northumberland to explore car-free, with a regular Coast and Castles bus service, a great network of footpaths and bridleways and the long-distance Northumberland Coast Path stretching its length and beyond. Well known for its diverse wildlife, The Northumberland Coast AONB attracts spectacular flocks of wading birds and wildfowl and large numbers of grey seals. The Farne Islands, managed by the National Trust are famous for their breeding seabirds and are one of the few places that visitors can get up close to thousands of puffins, terns and guillemots. Northumberland National Park England’s most tranquil and least visited National Park encompasses some of the most dramatic landscape in the North of England. Kielder Water & Forest Park Kielder Water & Forest Park may be remote and tranquil, but it’s also an area packed full of things to do. Kielder Water is northern Europe’s largest man-made lake and is surrounded by Kielder Forest, England’s largest forest, making for a unique outdoor experience. The 27 mile Lakeside Way is a stunning trail encircling the shoreline of the lake and is great for walkers and cyclists alike. Explorers of all abilities can get close to nature and also discover over 20 pieces of fascinating outdoor public art. Like much of Northumberland, Kielder Water & Forest Park provides homes for a wide range of often unique wildlife. Stunning views (Northumberland National Park)
Walking Northumberland has one of the finest selections of walking in the country with an extensive network of footpaths through a range of countryside from rolling farmland to forests, heather covered moorland and rugged hilltops. Experienced walkers enjoy the challenge of long distance trails such as the 64 mile Coast Path, part of the North Sea Trail; the Pennine Way and, of course, Hadrian’s Wall Path National Trail which, at 84 miles takes around 7 days to complete. Particularly apt for 2013, when the Lindisfarne Gospels return our region, is St Cuthbert’s Way which takes in towns and villages of significance in the life of England’s most revered Anglo-Saxon Saint. In a similar vein is the 97 mile St Oswald’s Way which passes through some of Northumberland’s most spectacular landscapes on its way from Heavenfield to Holy Island. Less well known is the Isaac’s Tea Trail which follows the footsteps of one of Northumberland’s most loved philanthropists and provides a challenging introduction to the beautiful North Pennines. If you prefer something a little less strenuous you’ll be spoilt for choice with shorter walks or circular routes taking in quaint villages and often offering options for local refreshment enroute. Why not try one of our Northumberland National Park Rangers’ favourite walks, or engage a guide to show you the best routes and reveal little known local secrets? Cycling Being criss-crossed with cycleways suitable for all abilities means cycling is one of the best ways to see Northumberland. Long distance routes running through the county include the Hadrian’s Cycleway, the Reiver’s Cycle Route, the Pennine Cycle Way and the Coast to Coast. Haltwhistle and Wooler are our official cycle hubs, but great routes are located right across the county catering for every interest. Mountain Bikers are also spoilt for choice with an extensive network of off-road tracks including the famous Deadwater Fell black-graded trail in Kielder Water & Forest Park, although there are also many more trails suitable for learners or a family holiday.

Wildlife Watching Northumberland is home to some of Britain’s best loved species, some of which are now sadly very rare. Explorers of Northumberland National Park may encounter lapwings, mountain pansies and buzzards, while in Kielder Water & Forest Park the huge variety of habitats provide homes for animals such as badgers, roe deer, otters and red squirrels, seven species of bat and birds including the spectacular ospreys who breed in the park every spring. The North Pennines are home to almost all the England’s population of black grouse, short-eared owls and rare arctic alpine plants, whilst our coasts team with large numbers of grey seals, puffins, guillemots and arctic terns and are also home to the largest UK colony of rare roseate terns.

WHAT more can a boy wish for? A 21ft tipi complete with a firebowl and the ultimate - a bag of marshmallows! Twenty minutes after “checking’’ into his Indian home for the weekend, five-year-old Ruaridh had helped his dad build a fire, worked out how the toasting fork needed to be handled and cooked a pink and white fluffy kebab! And all that while his two-year-old sister Flora whizzed around the spacious tipi kissing the beautifully painted animals on the inside perimeters. Outside the rain thundered down, but the Hay family managed to keep dry and cook a three-course meal on the fire bowl, before turning in for the night, parents on a comfy double bed, while the children slept soundly on futons, all of us kept warm by duck down duvets and Fair Trade and reindeer rugs. We were nestled in the heart of the Northumbrian National Park in Tarset, around 20 miles from Hexham, staying in the tipi owned by Wild Northumbrian Tipis and Yurt hosts Robert and Victoria Hersey.
Northumberland College, the zoo is home to a host of animals from emus to meerkats! It has been well thought out and the animals are kept in spacious and green settings, with the staff really enthusiastic about their “inmates’’. Students are taught in the zoo and at weekends and in school holidays, it is open to the public. There is so much more to see in Northumberland, it’s a county full of beautiful countryside, deserted beaches and picture postcard homes. Cooking and washing facilities (complete with underfloor heating!) are close by and the Hersey’s have made a good job of creating an environmentally friendly atmosphere in beautiful surroundings rich in wildlife (red squirrels!) and flowers. The couple run special workshops to teach outdoor skills such as bushcraft and wildness therapy. One of the attractions of the area is its darkness at night. A few miles away from Tarset is Kielder Water & Forest Park. There lies an observatory where you watch the stars by night and during the day, enjoy Northern Europe’s largest man-made lake and England’s largest forest.

There are lots of bike and walking trails and a birds of prey centre. An hour’s drive takes you into the market town of Hexham. Centrepiece in the town is the abbey which dates back to around 675 AD. The town itself is compact and neat and has a certain charm about it as you wander around. It is also home to a small, but beautiful racecourse. We had a flutter on Ladies’ Day and enjoyed the old-fashioned facilities and well-kept course, which as with most small courses, offers race-goers a good view without the need for big television screens. From Hexham, we headed towards Newcastle and the newlyopened Kirkley Hall Zoological Gardens. Set in the grounds of

carat home? Northumberland is a large county with lots of things to see and do, and a great many of them can be reached by public transport. So have some time off from driving, relax and watch the scenery drift by your bus or train window! Getting to Northumberland by rail is easy with the East Coast line providing direct links from London and the South East in under 3 ½ hours and from Edinburgh in 45 minutes. Direct links are also available from the Midlands and Yorkshire. You might also like to consider flying into Newcastle Airport and picking up public transport from there. Grace darling experience itinerary Grace Darling was 22 years old when she risked her life in an open boat to help the survivors of the wrecked SS Forfarshire. The courage that Grace and her family showed that day 175 years ago is now legendary. This itinerary includes a visit to Longstone Lighthouse where the family lived and the fabulous RNLI Museum and St Aidan’s Church in Bamburgh where she is buried. Arriving in Seahouses, get off the bus in the village. There are toilets opposite the Tourist Information Centre in the car park. At the harbour, head for the kiosks to get your boat tickets, the trip takes two hours and includes a tour of the lighthouse. Once you are back on land, return to the village centre to catch the X18 Arriva or 418 Travelsure service to Bamburgh. Disembark the bus in Bamburgh Village and head west, the Grace Darling Museum is on Radcliffe Road. The Museum has recently been rebuilt, it tells the tale of Grace Darling and the famous rescue. It also includes the famous rescue coble, Grace's dresses, letters and family belongings and a cornucopia of commemorative ware. After visiting the Museum, cross over the road to St Aidan’s Church. A place of worship was founded on the site of the present church in 635 by St Aidan who was called to Bamburgh from Iona by King Oswald to establish Christianity in his newly united Kingdom of Northumbria. Isaac’s tea trail Isaac’s Tea Trail is a 36-mile circular trail that starts in Allendale at Isaac's Well and goes over to Nenthead and Alston and returns by Ninebanks (YHA Ninebanks). The route is way marked and has distinctive Isaac signs.
He was also a Methodist like many others and distinctively dressed in black. Over the years Isaac became a familiar figure on his round of deliveries to the isolated farmhouses and remaining households still connected with the mines. He also helped raise money for local charities. As well as Isaac’s Tea Trail, Northumberland is home to other long-distance walks, including St. Oswald’s Way and St. Cuthbert’s Way. The walk follows the footsteps of the legendary tea seller and fund raiser Isaac Holden. On the trail you will discover glorious dales and cross wild moors with stunning views across the North Pennines. The walk is special because it gently carries you back in time to the 19th century – to the demise of the lead mining industry and the life of a local tea seller. When the lead mining industry collapsed Isaac was forced to find a new way of making a living and so he became a travelling tea seller.

SILVER
Typically suitable for a person with restricted walking ability and for those that may need to use a wheelchair some of the time and can negotiate a maximum of three steps. Independent – Typically suitable for a person who depends on the use of a wheelchair and transfers unaided to and from the wheelchair in a seated position. This person may be an independent traveller.

The Green Tourism Business Scheme is the leading sustainable tourism certification scheme in the UK. Look out for the Welcome logos where accommodation provides extra facilities for walkers and cyclists. The scheme also covers providers of special facilities for pets and families.
For serviced accommodation, there are two separate schemes – one for hotels and one for guest accommodation. Guest accommodation owners have to provide certain additional facilities and services at the higher star levels.
Access Exceptional attained by providing for all levels of mobility impairment listed above with reference to the British Standards BS 8300:2001. This is awarded to establishments that fulfill all the requirements of M1, M2, M3 (A or I) and some additional Best Practice criteria.
