WELCOME TO JOIN IN TROMP 2016 Our winners have become true ambassadors for percussion, all performing in the highest league of the international percussion playing field, and this is what makes me proud to be the manager of the TROMP International Percussion Competition.
Their careers have benefitted from our efforts in creating exposure and arranging concert engagements and other activities. However, winning is not and should not be the most important reason to join the competition. To meet colleagues, see and hear them perform and make new friends should be important in every level of professional musicianship. The TROMP competition has been at the start of many new percussion groups and sparkling projects. In the nice atmosphere that reflects the friendly and hospitable character of the people of Eindhoven, participants can really focus on their performances in the competition and, at the same time, have great fun. TROMP Percussion Eindhoven Founded in Eindhoven in 1971 by dr Theo TROMP, former Vice President of Philips, the biennial TROMP competition creates opportunities and an international stage for talented musicians. COMMISSIONED COMPOSITIONS TROMP Percussion Eindhoven creates opportunities and a stage for young talented percussionists, but also for percussion in general. With commissioned compositions by leading composers TROMP continues to innovate and refresh the repertoire for solo percussion.

Over the past fifteen years composers including Louis Andriessen, Bryce Dessner, Nico Muhly, Joey Roukens, Michael Torke, Steve Martland and Jacob ter Veldhuis have written new pieces for percussion commissioned by TROMP. Some of these works have been included in the selection list of compulsory repertoire for the competition. Glenn Kotche composes the new mandatory final work for the TROMP competition in 2016, which will be premiered by the three finalists with Asko|Schönberg and Slagwerk Den Haag. As a composer and percussionist, Glenn Kotche is active in both the composed music scene as in indie pop and the broad range in between. Kotche is a creative omnivore seeking the best of various artistic worlds, which he not only manages to connect but also enrich. From installations constructed from ‘found sound’ to compositions for ensembles such as the Kronos Quartet and Eighth Blackbird. And from collaborations with composers like John Luther Adams to his work as a drummer with Wilco, one of the world’s most influential indie rock bands.
Robin de Raaff writes Contradictie V, Semi-Finals’ compulsory work for multiple percussion solo set-up. De Raaff’s Percussion Concerto for percussion soloist and ensemble earned him international praise in The New York Times in 2013. De Raaff wrote compositions commissioned by the Netherlands Opera and the Holland Festival among others. His new work commissioned by TROMP, which according to the composer will be a playful piece, is the fifth in a series of solo pieces for various instruments. New repertoire in the Second Round Newly added to the repertoire for the second round of the TROMP competition in 2016, are two compositions which were both written for TROMP laureate Ramon Lormans (2006): Solo for marimba by the young composer Aart Strootman, one of the leading composers of a new Dutch generation, and Totem I and Totem II by internationally renowned percussionist Arnold Marinissen.
TROMP REPERTOIRE DAYS TROMP offers the possibility to attend master classes by jury members and laureates in various locations throughout the world in the Repertoire Days. Participants in the Repertoire Days get a chance to study the competition’s repertoire together, as well as other solo repertoire. Masters in previous editions: James Wood, Emmanuel Séjourné, Arnold Marinissen, Peter Prommel, Tatiana Koleva, Alexandre Esperet and Yi-Ping Yang among many others.

TROMP FESTIVAL The TROMP festival shows percussion in all its facets with upcoming talent next to world renown artists.

Currently, TROMP is preparing special productions for the 2016 edition featuring leading international artists such as Glenn Kotche. TROMP laureates will give exciting solo performances, or with other leading musicians and ensembles in ‘Meet the TROMP Winners’ at various locations in Eindhoven. The last Sunday of the festival is reserved for the Finale of the competition. International percussion seminar
TROMP feels the responsibility to play a leading role when it comes to reflection and development of professional percussion practice. In 2016, TROMP presents the first edition of a two-day seminar. Several internationally acclaimed keynote speakers will discuss the development of percussion after a century of explosive history from different perspectives: How will percussion evolve as a solo instrument in ensembles, orchestras and within various genres?
Muziekgebouw Eindhoven Eindhoven is the proud home of one of the finest concert halls in Europe. Today, Muziekgebouw Eindhoven is justifiably regarded as one of the premier European concert halls, attracting leading international musicians. The ambience and excellent acoustics have made Muziekgebouw Eindhoven an absolute favourite for audiences and performers alike. Located in Eindhoven city centre, it offers all the benefits of a modern, state-of-the-art concert hall. The two auditoriums in the Muziekgebouw were constructed according to scientifically derived acoustic engineering techniques provided by the Eindhoven University of Technology. RULES & REGULATIONS 1. General Conditions 1.1. The 2016 edition of the TROMP International Percussion Competition Eindhoven (“the Competition”) will take place at Muziekgebouw Frits Philips Eindhoven, the Netherlands, from November 17th to 27th, 2016 under the aegis of Stichting Tromp Muziek Biënnale and the Board of the Tromp Biennial Music Festival Foundation (‘the TROMP Board’). 1.2. The official language of the Competition is English. 1.3. The Competition is open to professional percussionists of all nationalities who: a) are maximum 30 years of age at the start of the Competition; and, b) have completed their professional education or are currently in their final year. Not eligible to participate are percussionists meeting the above requirements who have been admitted and have actually performed in both of the last two consecutive editions of the TROMP International Percussion Competition Eindhoven (in 2012 and 2014). Those who performed in one or none of the last two editions are eligible to participate. 1.4. All decisions by the international competition jury (“the Competition Jury”) - composed of an odd number of voting members and a non-voting chairman - will be final, and no correspondence will be entered into regarding its decisions.
2. Applications 2.1. Applications will be accepted until May 1st 2016. 2.2. Applications can only be submitted digitally through the special application website at trompentries.nl, and must include the following: a) A completely filled-in digital application form b) A copy of the applicant’s passport c) A brief resume in English describing training, experience and achievements together with an ultra-short 100-word summary
d) A recent, high-quality portrait photograph with a minimum size of 1MB, free of copyright and suitable for publicity purposes g) Two letters of recommendation h) A recent sound recording of a live performance containing: • one work for mallets • one work for percussion set-up NB The sound recording clearly labelling its contents should be of professional quality. The recording must be recorded in real time and should not have been edited or altered in any way. The TROMP Board reserves the right to disqualify candidates who have submitted studio enhanced or modified recordings. The recording can be uploaded at the special website for entries. (i) A complete listing of the works intended to be performed during each Round of the Competition following the Programme requirements set out in Article 4. The list should specify composer, title, music edition and performance time of each chosen work. TROMP does not charge an application fee. The obligatory € 200 entry fee as set out in Article 2.6 is only charged to applicants who have accepted the invitation to participate in the Competition and become Participants. 2.3. Applications can only be entered after registration at the website www.trompentries.nl 2.4. The Competition Jury members will individually review the programme proposals of the applicants and audition the candidates in a preliminary round on the basis of anonymous copies of their recordings. Joint conclusions will be announced before July 15th 2016. 2.5. Up to 30 percussionists will be invited to participate in the Competition in Eindhoven with another 5 percussionists granted a back-up position, i.e. they will be admitted in case a previously selected participant does not or not timely before August 1st 2016 accept the invitation to participate, does not timely pay the entry fee referred to in Article 2.6 or withdraws before October 1st 2016. 2.6. Applicants who accept the invitation to participate in the Competition, are required to pay the Competition’s obligatory € 200 entry fee by August 1st 2016 at the
Ú latest. Payment should be made net of bank charges or transfer costs to the account of Stichting Tromp Muziek Concours IBAN NL12 RABO 0133731078, SWIFT or BIC identification RABONL2U. The entry fee is not refundable. The TROMP Board reserves the right to withdraw its invitation to participate and invite a candidate from the back-up list in case of late or incomplete payment. 2.7. Applicants invited to participate who have duly paid their entry fee, shall qualify and shall generally be referred to as Participants. 2.8. All Participants shall provide the TROMP Project Office with clear and detailed instrument & set-up descriptions before September 15th 2016.
3. The Competition 3.1. Venue of the Competition will be Muziekgebouw Frits Philips Eindhoven, The Netherlands. All rounds of the Competition will be open to the general public and may be broadcasted live or recorded for future purposes. The performing schedule has been set as follows: a) First Round, Friday the 18th and Saturday the 19th of November 2016 b) Second Round, Monday the 21st of November 2016 c) Semi-Finals, Wednesday the 23rd and Thursday the 24th of November 2016 d) Finale, Sunday the 27th of November 2016. The First and Second Round are to be considered as further qualifying rounds. Results scored for performances during these rounds will not be taken into account by the Competition Jury in judging performances in the Semi-Finals and Finale. 3.2. The order of performance for the first two Rounds and subsequently also for both the Semi-Finals and the Finale will be decided by a draw of lots. Participants who will have to start in the first half of the First Round, will be scheduled to perform in reverse order in the second half of the Second Round.

RULES & REGULATIONS 3.3. Participants shall not communicate with Competition Jury members during the Competition, nor shall any other person communicate with these jury members on behalf of any Participant. The TROMP Board reserves the right to disqualify Participants who breach this rule or on whose behalf this rule has been violated. 3.4. Participants who are not admitted to the next round of the Competition will be provided the opportunity to discuss their performance with members of the Competition Jury, time permitting. 3.5. Should a Participant be or have been a regular student of one of the members of the Competition Jury, the latter will abstain from the jury deliberations in his or her respect.

3.6. Participants must ensure that the maximum performing time duration for each Round (see art. 4.3 through 4.6) is not exceeded. The Competition Jury may, in its absolute discretion, stop Participants that run overtime. 3.7. No more than nine Participants will proceed to the Semi-Finals, and no more than three Participants will be admitted to the Finale. 3.8. The Competition Jury has the right not to grant a prize or have two Participants share a prize (with exception of the First Prize), as have the Press Jury and the Youth Jury.
4. Programme & Repertoire 4.1. As noted in Article 2.2, applicants must clearly state their complete programme for each round in their entry forms, specifying composer, title, music edition and performance time of each chosen work. Among the works listed should be compositions selected in accordance with the provisions of Article 4.3 through 4.6, which are illustrative of the level expected from Competition applicants. 4.2. In principle the works listed will be considered a final choice. No other work can be substituted without
prior approval of the Competition Jury represented by its Chairman, which shall not unreasonably be withheld. Changes in the proposed programme per round should be filed before September 15th 2016. 4.3. First Round • Performing time: maximum 20 minutes (including intervals). • Repertoire: - A choice from: • Iannis Xenakis - Rebonds A • Iannis Xenakis - Rebonds B • Kevin Volans - Asanga - A work for vibraphone of one’s own choice. 4.4. During the Competition Participants may perform each work only once (excluding the preliminary round)
5. Prizes 5.1. There are seven prizes and one honours award that can be won in the Competition. For all prizes except the Press Prize it is stipulated that part of the Prize should be spent on additional study, participation in other competitions and/or the purchase of instruments or scores. Only the Competition Finalists qualify for the three ranking prizes (art. 5.2), the Press Prize (art. 5.5) and the Friends of TROMP Audience Award (art. 5.6). Subject to Article 3.8 the ‘The Annelie’, prize of the youth jury (art. 5.6), may be granted to any of the Competition’s Semi-Finalists, including the maximum three Participants proceeding to the Finale, whilst the Willem Vos Award (art. 5.3) can be won by any of the Participants who have performed in both the First and Second Round. 5.2. The three ranking prizes will be awarded by decision of the Competition Jury subject to Article 3.8 and will be publicly announced immediately after the Competition Finale on Sunday November 27th 2016. a) First Prize • A sum of 15,000 Euro, of which 7,000 Euro is reserved for additional study, participation in other competitions and/or the purchase of instruments or scores within two years after the Competition • Concerts in the Season 2016-2017 (dates to be specified by the TROMP Project Office). • Further options for recitals within two years after the Competition.
b) Second Prize • A sum of 10,000 Euro, of which 5,000 Euro is reserved for additional study, participation in other competitions and/or the purchase of instruments or scores within two years after the Competition • Options for recitals within two years after the Competition. c) Third Prize • A sum of 7,000 Euro of which 3,000 Euro is reserved for further study, participation in other competitions and/or the purchase of instruments or scores within two years after the Competition • Options for recitals within two years after the Competition. 5.3. The Willem Vos Award for the best performance of a work by a Dutch composer prior to the Semi-Finals will be awarded by decision of the Competition Jury. The winner or winners will be publicly announced after the last of the Semi-Finals recitals on Thursday the 24th of November 2016. The prize consists of a sum of 500 Euro. 5.4. The Press Prize will be awarded by decision of a special jury composed of critics active for newspapers, trade journals or other public media on the basis of the performances of the Competition Finalists during the Finale only. The winner or winners, if any, will be publicly announced immediately after the Competition Finale on Sunday November 27th 2016. The prize consists of a sum of 2,000 Euro. 5.5. The Friends of TROMP Audience Award will be decided upon by ballot by the audience attending the Finale on the basis of the performances of the Competition Finalists during the Finale. The winner will be publicly announced immediately after the Competition Finale on Sunday November 27th 2016. The prize consists of a sum of 3.000 Euro reserved for additional study, participation in other competitions or the purchase of instruments or scores within two years after the Competition. 5.6. ‘The Annelie’, prize of the youth jury will be decided upon by decision by a special jury composed of 5 senior high school students who are expected to attend all performances of Participants in the course of the Competition. The winner will be publicly announced immediately after the Competition Finale on Sunday November 27th 2016. The prize consists of a sum of 1,000 Euro.
6. Communication and Facilitation 6.1. The TROMP Board has established a TROMP Project Office for operational matters. In addition to the travel, board and lodging arrangements set out in Article 7, the TROMP Board will endeavour to arrange the availability of all percussion instruments required and timely advised by the Participants. No guarantees are given as to the availability of instruments of a specific make. 6.3. In order to allow sufficient time for the selection of instruments and consultation as to set-up requirements Participants are expected to arrive in Eindhoven three days in advance of the Competition on Tuesday the 15th of November 2016. Practicing rooms and instruments will have to be shared and stage rehearsal time will be limited. Two weeks in advance of the Competition at the latest, the TROMP Project Office will forward a practicing, consultation and stage rehearsal-time schedule that aims to divide facilities equally among Participants.
7. Travel, Board and Lodging
c) accommodation in private family homes, max. two participants per room, in the Eindhoven area from Monday the 14th of November till Monday the 28th of November 2016. Participants who prefer a hotel accommodation should make the arrangements and cover the costs themselves. A list of hotels can be mailed upon request. d) a combination of some meals and a per diem from Monday the 14th of November till Monday the 28th of November 2016. 7.2. Obtaining appropriate travel documents and insurance is the sole responsibility of each Participant for him- or herself. The Tromp Biennial Music Festival Foundation and the TROMP Board accept no liability of any kind whatsoever for any personal illness or injury sustained by Participants, nor for loss or damage to a Participant’s belongings, including instruments, during transit or while at the Competition.
8.Legal 8.1. By submitting the digital application form, applicants state their agreement: a) with all articles in these Rules and Regulations; b) with all ensuing engagements as part of any prize. This includes the winners concert engagements in the concert season of 2016-2017; c) that all concert and recording engagements obtained by the Competition or its designates as part of the first, second and third prize will not be subject to any fee payable to the prize-winner’s current or future artist management; d) that the Competition is authorized to record, videotape, film, broadcast, or photograph any competition concerts or events for any purpose, without payment of any fee. All rights, including copyright in such media shall vest in and be owned by the competition in perpetuity.
7.1. All Participants will be entitled to the following travel, board and lodging arrangements: a) reimbursement of pre-agreed reasonable travel expenses to and from the Netherlands up to a maximum of 800 Euro (proposed travel arrangements should be informed to and discussed with the TROMP Project Office timely in advance); b) local transportation to Muziekgebouw Frits Philips Eindhoven from Schiphol Airport, Eindhoven Airport or Eindhoven Central Station;
