Liatris spicata is a NYS native plant species. Blazing Star is a staple native plant species for American meadows and grasslands. The plant is a bulb with a sturdy and dependable habit. The plants have tall spikes of purple flowers resembling bottle brushes or feathers that grow 1–5 ft (0.30–1.52 m) tall. The species grows in hardiness zones 3 – 8, stretching from the Midwest to the East Coast, eastern and western Canada. The plant leaves are grass shaped. Purchase an ounce of our Gayfeather seed and you can grow thousands of plants.

Liatris spicata is also called Blazing Star, or Gayfeather. Surely Liatris is a butterfly magnet, and well beloved by our pollinator species. Additionally, this species is easy to grow from seed and can spread well throughout meadows and gardens. Overall, Blazing Star is a classic part of the American meadow or native grassland. Surprisingly, the plant has good drought tolerance and gorgeous winter presence. The fluffy seedheads feed songbirds in December and January. Baby seedlings of Liatris are easily confused with young grass seedlings, so slow down when you’re weeding a garden with this plant.
