- Broadleaf evergreen shrub, 5 ft (1.5 m), compact branching, spreading, wider than tall. Leaves oblanceolate-elliptic, 19 x 6 cm, dark green, often not flat but V-shaped. Flowers are bright scarlet, with some black speckling, funnel-campanulate, wavy-edge, 7 cm wide, about 10 per dome shaped cluster.
- - 5°F, mid, 4/4/4 [flower/ plant & foliage/ performance; scale 1 (poor) 5 (best)]. Sun tolerant, part shade.
- Developed by C.B. van Nes & Sons nursery, Boskoop, Holland, before 1940, registered in 1958. All new red rhododendrons are judged against this old, well-known, popular standard.
- Registered as ‘The Honourable Jean Marie de Montague’ but usually referred to as ‘Jean Marie de Montague’ or simply ‘Jean Marie’.
- Received the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit in 1993.
- Oregon State Univ. campus: east side of Gilmore Hall.
