Noah, a farmer and family man, is instructed by an angel to build an ark in the middle of a desert in order to save both his family and the faithful from a devastating flood. A seemingly impossible task, especially when his sons refuse to believe him and help, Noah risks ridicule and humiliation from the degenerate townsfolk as well as his loving but exasperated family, in his quest to carry out his God-given task.

I'm not religious and so epic retellings of stories from the Bible have never really done much for me, but I tuned in for the actors involved; David Threlfall and Joanne Whalley, Ashley Walters, The Village and My Mad Fat Diary star Nico Mirallegro, One Day's Georgina Campbell, In The Flesh's Emily Bevan - this was a good line up, all tempted into sandals and shawls by veteran scriptwriter Tony Jordan (creator of Hustle, co-creator of Life on Mars and writer of over 200 episodes of EastEnders) who brought a distinctively contemporary flavour to the Old Testament tale.

For a moment, as more and more people (not animals) we’re re crowding onto Ark, that this movie would try to reconcile the impossibility of a worldwide flood. For a moment we’d get a slight reimagining of a more humane Yahweh.
But alas, that moment was fleeting. First, we see a long pan to distant elephant and giraffe silhouettes, and then a farther pan to see the globe wide water eruptions.
I’ll admit, I don’t know how BBC produces films and if they are fine with religious films that outright condemn atheists, but there’s a lot in this film. The Bible doesn’t exactly give a lot of details about why the world deserved an extinction level event - it could’ve…

Hannah John-Kamen is the reason why, let's not kid ourselves.
An interesting new take on the story, very family-lead, concentrating far more on the family and local town reaction to Noah's task.
