The family Dolichopodidae is one of five major lineages within the superfamily Empidoidea of the infraorder Muscomorpha. The other four empidoid families that are currently recognized are the Empididae, Atelestidae, Hybotidae and Brachy stomatidae. The Dolichopodidae are generally divided into 17 subfamilies (see classification below), including the recently added basal subfamilies Microphorinae and Parathalassiinae. This expanded concept of the family is referred to as Dolichopodidae s.lat. The other 15 subfamilies exclusive of Microphorinae and Parathalassiinae are referred to as Dolichopodidae s.str., which is equivalent to the traditional concept of the family.
