The Markt Square in Bruges is the central heart of the city. Cobblestone streets are throughout the square and it's surrounded by stunning architecture.
Here you will see the Belfry of Bruges. A prominent bell tower that you can climb for panoramic views of the city. In the square there are Beautiful historic buildings with plenty of restaurants and outdoor cafes.
It's a lively and picturesque place to explore.Helpful 9Thanks 1Love this 13Oh no 0 - Dec 19, 2023
The entire historical city centre is a World Heritage City. Markt is the central square of Bruges. The Belfry (medieval bell tower) located here is also an UNESCO World Heritage Site. The colorful old Guild Houses are another point of interest. When we visited, the Christmas Market was being set up. It would've been a great experience if only we came a few days later.

Bruges is an impressive old town. Quite big, but very walkable at least for the historic part. There are really countless historic buildings, squares, churches and cathedrals, canals. It's just a beautiful place to visit. One of the biggest squares is this one. And one not to be missed.
The colorful buildings line up here and the Belfort Tower dominates the scene here. It's a massive construction. The Provincial Hoof is also located here and worth a look. It's a busy place. And there's quite some traffic, that's too bad. Just be careful when buses, horse carriages and taxis come and go. But it's an impressive sight.
And since there are lots of restaurants and cafés, maybe it's a good spot to sit down, take a drink and watch the world go by. It's not a place to dine, there are better options around. But perfect for having drink with a view.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Feb 14, 2018
Gorgeous, grand, majestic, breathtaking, and a must see! This space is absolutely beautiful and I recommend you to take some time to just walk around and take in your surrounding. If you come here before 2 pm, you will see fruit stands that occupy majority of the square. It empties out pretty well after 2 pm or so. There is a clean bathroom (50 cent per entry) inside the watchtower square.
To go up the watchtower, give yourself at least 30 minutes for the round trip. If there is a queue waiting outside, allow more time.
You could also grab a window seat at a restaurant in the area, just don't hold high expectation for the food quality. Enjoy the view!Helpful 6Thanks 0Love this 6Oh no 0 - Stanley S.Winter Garden, FL2539May 24, 2023Updated review
OK, so this review is only for the Markt itself and I will praise that. The Markt and its architecture is beautiful and one could sit and study it for hours. The issue I have is with the cheesy tourist driven cafes that offer poor tourist-driven food and crowds. They even go as far as putting out English menus hawking their wares and advertising for tourists. As far as the Markt itself, it is one of the most beautiful squares in Europe with its centerpiece, The Belfort. Unfortunately it is ruined by The Historium and the poor horses who endlessly carry about tourists. Listen, I get it; Bruges derives much of its income from tourism but it has gotten out of hand, There are roaming hordes of teens and pre-teens on excursions from school, only to be complicated by day bus trips. On our last visit we at least had a bit of a respite from the day trips during the week. We were surprised at how busy the weekdays were as last trip there were times we felt as if we had the city to ourselves. Forget about the weekends where the crowds are getting to Venice-size proportions. I digress. We loved this city and wanted to return so badly, hang out in The Markt, experience the farmers market and the people of Bruges, but this visit was a disappointment as to how tourism is ruining it. Unrelated to The Markt, we did make our own fun, sought out lesser crowded areas, did a lot more window shopping and try for the experiences that would not necessarily attract crowds. I suggest you do too. Stay away from the Markt as much as possible.

Itself, it has beautiful architecture, including the Belfort Tower, and you can tell it is the source from which all activity flows. The day we arrived it was later in the day and empty so we felt like we had The Markt, and Bruges itself, all to ourselves;very romantic. The next day was entirely different with its day guests and bus tours. It was so crowded, I still wonder if it was some sort of holiday. Early in the AM and towards evening you can get a horse drawn carraige ride, but why do that in this incredible walking city. The Markt, as well as the city were spotless and we saw shop owners washing the streets in front of their shops as well as local sanitation workers steam cleaning the streets. We noticed at night, all the shops had the same small garbage bags neatly tied in front of their shop for pick up (must be a local ordinance) that were gone by morning. We were there for market day when the square is filled with flowers, produce, breads, meats, cheeses. etc., all being sold from stalls or massive trucks that open up to filled Caselines. It was a nice walk-through and had we not already had breakfast, grabbed some items. The only negative about the Markt is the touristy restaurants on the square, all selling and hawking with gaudy signs, the same items, just under different cafe names. It seemed tacky and not at all in keeping with the Medieval look. Walk around, enjoy and drink in the atmosphere, just don't step in any left by the ummm... (BTW, most wore diapers or catch bags and if there was any left behind, it was quickly cleaned).

No matter if you are a tourist or local, the Markt is the heartbeat of Trier. You can get your grocery shopping done, have a snack or just enjoy the views. Since Trier is the oldest city I try to image what it might have been like over the thousands of years this square has been used.
Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - 5794391597Mar 17, 2019
You have to come to this area of Bruges if you want that picturesque view of Belgium. There are so many restaurants, shops, and activities surrounding this area and it is gorgeous in the day and night!

BEYOND, just beyond. I visited during Christmas time, and it was just so special. The gingerbread houses, the lights, and market. It was a magical experience, and will down as one of my favorite Christmases. Don't sleep on Belgium when visiting Europe, especially not Bruges.

A must see if you're a tourist in Brugge (Bruges), Belgium. It is the main square in the city and a good starting point. A 2-3 mile walk from the main Brugge train station as well, so not too far away (no need for a taxi or bus).
Walk the cobble stone streets to Grote Markt and take in the sights and sounds of the square. The buildings and churches are old school (back to the medieval and Renaissance days). There are new shops, tons of restaurants, lots of people and is very lively. Take tons of tons, I don't recommend the horse-drawn carriage (VERY EXPENSIVE and mucho euros), and look for the river cruise around square.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - 40412483756Oct 16, 2018
Just a beautiful public place, lined with restaurants and gorgeous architecture, like the rest of the town. There are a couple larger, more imposing and formal buildings on two sides of the square and then smaller, typical Flemish style buildings, mostly housing restaurants. It's one of the key people-watching places and you'll surely see horses clopping by with tourists in tow and tons of people wandering around gawking at the architecture. Definitely have a meal on this square so you can enjoy it to the fullest.
