Gongylus gongylodes is one of the best species to start with when getting into keeping Empusids (Species in the family Empusidae). This species, as well as B. mendica, are relatively easy to care for if you know what you are doing, and this care sheet should provide you with what you need to succeed. If your end goal is to keep Idolomantis or Idolomorpha, this is the best species to keep first. It is also very rewarding in itself. The species is very popular due to it’s size and camouflage. It is also readily available around the world and fairly middle range price wise.

This species is designed to feed on flying insects, particularly pollinators. Crickets are particularly bad for Empusids, more so than the normal problems crickets cause for other easier species. As a small nymph, they will feast on fruit flies and bluebottles and house flies when they get older. Although they will devour several flies at a time, it is not a good idea to fill the cage with flies as this stresses out the mantis. A constant supply of flies is needed so the mantis can be fed every day, if not, every other day.
