Excerpt from L'Interpretation Lyrique On rencontrera frequemment dans cet ouvrage le desir du Vrai. Doit - ou prendre ce terme au pied de la lettre et le comprendre comme si je voulais que ce qui est represente en Art lyrique, soit l'exactitude brutale, materielle, sans admettre la fiction ou la tra duction imaginative d'un poete ou d'un musicien? Cela serait ridicule. Le sens qu'il faut lui donner est celui-ci tout fait, tout geste, comme tout'e expres sion subsequente a. Une impression morale, ont une cause, une source materielle. Or, les personnages que nous cree le Theatre, agissent et vivent. Ils doivent donc, selon les lois de la verite que contient LE sujet traite, etre vrais, donc vivants selon les lois de la Nature. Cette verite ne doit etre conclue que d'apres les donnees memes de l'oeuvre executee. Ce qui revient a dire que plus une oeuvre a un fond positif et equilibre, plus elle sera oeuvre de Verite.
