Chlorophyta (Ulva):Green Algae
-Algae (plantlike) most diverse
-Named after spiral shaped chloroplast
-Chlorophyll (some have yellow pigments that give them a yellow-green color)
-Most live in freshwater, but some live in the oceans, in moist soil, on tree trunks, in snow, and in fur
-Unicellular, colonial or multicellular in organization
-Volvox can form a colony
-Flagellated cells arranged in a single layer forming a hollow, ball shaped structure (colony) the cells are connected by strands of cytoplasm + flagella face outwards then beat together, spinning the colony through water. Small balls of daughter colonies form, which eventually are released.
-Reproduce both asexually and sexually (e.g. Spirogyra can reproduce asexually through fragmentation- an ind. breaks up into pieces and each piece grows into a new ind.) Some produce spores
