Fonds consists of correspondence which contains information about Nelles' business dealings in lumber and whisky, his family and his political involvements as a Member of Legislative Assembly and a Justice of the Peace.

Nelles, Robert, 1761-1842 : Robert Nelles was born in Tryon County, New York. He served as a Lieutenant, in various outposts, with the Indian Department and later settled at Grimsby, Upper Canada, where he established extensive milling, lumbering, distilling and farming enterprises.

Nelles took an active part in the political and legal developments in the area he settled. He was commissioned General Commissioner of the Peace for Home, 1796, Niagara, 1800-1833, Gore 1816-1828 and Western Districts, 1816. He was granted Dedimus Potestatem for Niagara, 1800, and Johnstown, 1817. Nelles also served Lincoln County in the Legislative Assembly from 1800 to 1808 and from 1816 to 1820.
