Dr. Viviane Pierrard

Information

Prof. Dr. Viviane Pierrard is head of the solar wind division as Senior Scientist at the Royal Belgian Institute for Space Aeronomy, and invited Professor of Physics at the Université Catholique de Louvain. She also leads the team “Fundamental Science” of the Solar-Terrestrial Center of Excellence (STCE). She is a space plasma physicist specializing in the solar wind and its interactions with the Earth's magnetosphere, especially the radiation belts, the population of suprathermal particles, the plasmasphere, the ionosphere and more generally space weather. She obtained her PhD in space physics in 1997 at UCLouvain. She received several prizes for her works, including the Zeldovich Medal (COSPAR 2006), awards from the Belgian Academy of Science (2000, 2002) and an award from the Belgian Physical Society (2000). She is Editor of Journal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics, and is also active in different national committees where she was President (SRBA Royal Belgian Society of Astronomy, BPS Belgian Physical Society), Vice President (Belgian URSI International Union of Radio Science) or Secretary (BNCGG National committee of Geodesy and Geophysics).
