Pyrausta

A curiously small breed of dragon, the Pyrausta is found in India, and was long traded to Greece, where the creatures are prized more as pets, than as the pests they are in India. Known for their love of fruit still on the vine, they have ruined many a harvest when wild, but when tamed and kept in aviaries their bright displays and cheerful chirping makes them pleasant creatures to keep.

Pyrausta eggs are laid into a fire, and require the heat of the fire to hatch. When first hatched they have the head of a dragon, but a much more insectlike body, and if they leave the fire in this stage they will inevitably die, requiring, like Salamanders, the fire for their life. However once they have metamorphosed, through a chrysalis, into their more rotund adult form, they can and do survive away from the fire, often travelling far for food or mates.
