3 Dead Vaquitas in 3 Weeks

The dwindling vaquita population has suffered a devastating blow over the last few weeks. A total of 3 dead vaquitas have been found since March 4th.

The first was discovered floating in the water by Sea Shepherd as they patrolled the Sea of Cortez for illegal totoaba gill nets.

The second was found washed up on a beach about 10 days later north of Puerto de San Felipe.

A third (pictured) was again found floating in the ocean by Sea Shepherd on March 24th.

It is suspected all 3 died as a result of entanglement in illegal totoaba gill nets.

The vaquita cannot afford to lose even one individual. At this rate, they may be extinct by the end of the year. It is estimated that fewer than ~80 or so are left.
