The concept art for "Amphibiland," featuring a blue-haired Anne and "Weed."
Amphibia has a lot of storylines that were taken out.
  • Originally, the show was pitched as Amphibiland. A test pilot was made as a proof of concept, and unlike the final show, Anne would've had both her shoes with her and Sprig would've been voiced by Thurop Van Orman. Polly also doesn't appear (she was confirmed to have not made it into the test pilot), and while Grime is otherwise unaltered, his lair looks more like a castle rather than a tower. The pilot also had more Dark Fantasy aesthetics that were toned in the finished product.
  • Hop Luck was originally called "Passing the Ladle" and would have focused on Sprig, unlike the finalized version of the episode focusing on Anne.
  • According to Derek Kirk Kim's instagram , the beginning of "Best Fronds" was originally going to be ambiguous as to whether Anne was remembering the events of the previous episode, or if she was hallucinating, as the box would have seemed to look at her. The final version of the scene is unambiguously a flashback, showing Anne stealing the box and the trio getting transported.
  • Anne Vs. Wild had a flashback that was cut for time, where a young Anne was shown on a camping trip with her father.
  • One early idea for Marcy was her adopting a "witch in the woods" persona. Apparently this was one of many changes for Marcy, as Matt Braly said she went through a huge personality change before season 2.
    • Matt Braly would later elaborate on the whole "personality change" with Marcy, explaining in an interview towards the conclusion of the series that the character was originally written as much more cold and calculating. However, Haley Tju's take on Marcy gave her a much more warm and bubbly personality, inspiring him and the writers to reimagine her in the transition from season 1 to season 2.
  • One joke cut from "A Day at the Aquarium" was a scene involving King Andrias reading a story, and Anne pondering about her shoes.
  • A whole boatload of beta images for the show have come out online. They include different clothes for Sasha with one having a skull on her shoulder, different hair and clothes for Marcy (some including the "witch in the woods" persona seen above) with some of them giving her glasses, frogs and/or toads wearing armor, Grime with a cybernetic eye and arm, Anne with much longer hair, and dirtier clothing and different colors and clothing for King Andrias.
  • Anne's parents were originally supposed to appear in the opening of "Reunion", but were taken out due to time, as they wanted the flashback to focus on Anne and Sasha. The episode would've originally opened with Anne leaving home and saying goodbye to her parents before heading to school.
  • In one of Marcy's character designs, Marcy was going to carry a violin with her during her travels and was also a musical prodigy. This trait seems to have been transferred over to Sprig.
  • The three human girls were originally supposed to be 15 (turning on 16) years old before Disney demanded them to be aged down to make them more relatable to younger audiences. Some story elements weren't changed from the original idea, such as Anne mentioning she took a couple of driving lessons and playing varsity tennis, Marcy studying for the SATs, and the girls' more spindly designs.
  • The theme had a set of lyrics written called "Welcome To Amphibia", but Matt Braly disliked them for not fitting the tone of the show but kept the instrumentals. They can be heard here. The lyrical version was listened to by Ned in "Thai Feud".
  • Concept art made by Joe Sparrow reveals designs for Sasha and Marcy's basic Calamity forms that didn't appear in the finale. Said designs would've featured their signature weapons becoming powered by their respective gems.
  • Matt confirmed that the final season has the equivalent of 19 episodes of runtime (plus an additional few minutes on the final episode) rather than 20 like the first two, due to the following:
    • One of the episodes that ended up cut from Season 3 was another Halloween special that could have featured claymation. The crew ended up cutting it due to the strain from having to work through the COVID-19 Pandemic. Matt also admits he’d wanted a claymation episode since Season 1 but lacked the budget then.
    • The back half of Season 3 was originally going to have an episode where Anne and Sasha have a heart-to-heart conversation that involves Sasha flashing back to her past and how her parents' divorce affected her. But the crew was having trouble framing it in a way that didn't seem as though Sasha was blaming her parents for her bad actions which ran counter to her character arc, so the episode was scrapped.
  • One idea Matt Braly had was for a three-way battle to occur between Anne, Sasha, and Marcy at some point in the story, but he ultimately threw it aside because (a non-possessed) Marcy would never try and deliberately harm Anne and Sasha in any way, making it impossible to justify having Marcy fight the other two in any sort of battle as herself.
  • When Anne says goodbye to the Plantars for the last time in “The Hardest Thing”, Bessie was supposed to lean and whisper to Anne’s ear “I Love You Anne” in perfect English. However, Matt chickened out on adding that scene.
  • A couple more things from the Amphibiland pitch has been revealed. This includes Sasha being raised by a single dad instead of having seemingly divorced parents, Hop-Pop, and every male Plantar sharing the same name as Weed (Remember that was Sprig's name at some point in development), Anne living in the Plantar shed that only covered her upper body, and also having an imaginary living Tamagotchi friend named Eggbert.
  • In the Amphibiland concept art, Anne was supposed to have lighter skin and blue hair.
