Ward Area of research Key words : Transition Management towards sustainable development; Agroecology of food systems - Relationships between agriculture, environment, and "territorialisation" process - Relationship between animals – breeding –breeders. Sustainable development following the Bruntland report, appeared like a new collective horizon of reference. If one wants to exceed the consensual character of his quasi ritual invocation, it is necessary to give him contents, and in particular to make a scientific project of it. It is it to what I stick on a certain number of grounds. Sustainable development at first sight introduces new criteria of evaluation of the projects, policies and technologies. It is a first level, very little discriminant, taking into account the multiplicity of possible interpretations, of evaluation scales of application fields. On a second level, more relevant, sustainable development obliges to integrate various disciplines and could constitute a new discipline for this reason, - sciences of sustainable development -, it with what a double training in agronomy and social sciences prepares me. In particular, the food systems are thus emerging like new objects of research, different from the agrarian or agro-alimentary systems by the fact that they take into account social and cultural dimensions. This prospect is that of a science which is neither fundamental, nor applied, but integrative. But this scientific effort of integration still opens on a third level which is that of “how” to do research, to take into account various dimensions supposes an interaction with the recipients, in particular on the two levels which are the formulation of the questions of research and the discussion of the results. Sustainable development is thus a trajectory and an evolution more than one definition of criteria and standards. It is then a question of developing new methods of research, including the researcher and the actors in the process, reason for which I fall under a theory of the “transition” (Anglo-Saxon school of Management) and of research intervention (school of French management). This wire red of “Transition”, that one could also describe as “sciences and management of possible” which crosses my research and questions the bond between management and production of knowledge of the environment, according to very diversified methods' question. Sustainable development refers to the question of the transition of and relationships between action and knowledge. How do we characterize development pathways, their abilities to learn, or, on the contrary, their degrees of irreversibility? What new forms of organization and knowledge generation are arising with a view to action that leads to greater sustainability? Scientific activities 2.1 CURRENT RESEARCH PROJECTS AEEN (2010- 2012): : AgroEcology European Networks (coordinator). This encompass the building of a European interdisciplinary network around agroecology, annual European workshop around the potential of agroecology for the environmental transition of agriculture, organisation of an international summer school on agroecology – Participation to an international workshop on the social movement and agroecology. Partner: SAD, INRA SAD, -Ecodev S Bellon, UCLouvain Ph. Baret. O2LA (2011-2014): Organisms and Organisation Locally Adapted : how the local management of animal and vegetal genetics resources allow the development of breed that valorise the environmental, economic, social and cultural context. The research project aims to analyse and give support to agriculture dynamics that try to better articulate farmers practices with the specificities of rural territories. This international project, is an interdisciplinary research with INRA SAD Corte, Agroparitech, Toulouse University, Liège University and Louvain Catholic University. Funding: National Agency for Research (France), program « SYSTERRA Programme Ecosystèmes, territoires, ressources vivantes et agricultures » DODDE (2008-2011) : Development of tOols for Diagnostic of DurablE Stock farming. Development of sustainability of stock farming leads to extensification and systematic pasture. Systematic pasture increase the exposition of cattle to lung and stomacal parasites and the use of chemical medicine to solve this. Chemical residues of such medicine are found in the trophic chain and eventually affect protected species. The re-naturalisation of the stock farming involve the management of complex systems that rest on heterogeneous knowledge’s. Design of such research involves cooperation between practitioners and researchers and interdisciplinary research. Cooperation: Veterinary Faculty Liège University, Louvain Catholic University, Bioforum. Funding: Walloon Regio, Agriculture General Direction, Grant, AM 11 décembre 2008. BIOETHA (2008-2012) : Prospective on Territories and Biofuel in Walloon Regio. Funding: Walloon Center for Agriculture Research. 2.2 Completed research projects 2005-08, Collectifs de consommateurs, questionnement social et consommation durable (Consumers’ groups, social questioning, and sustainable development).
