André Simon (1877-1970) was a French wine merchant and an author of numerous books about wine. Shortly after the publication of this book, Simon died, leaving only two magnums of wine in his personal cellar. It was his belief that "a man dies too young if he leaves any wine in his cellar." On what would have been Simon's 100th birthday in 1977, 400 guests assembled at the Savoy Hotel in London to drink the Château Latour 1945 that he left for the occasion.
