gebonden in hardcover, 159pp, geillustreerd. genummerd Eugeen Van Mieghem (1875-1930) wist als geen ander het harde leven aan de Antwerpse dokken in rake lijnen vast te leggen. In die zin sluit zijn werk nauw aan bij dat van Steinlen, Jean-Louis Forain of Kathe Kollwitz. In deze tentoonstelling tonen we vooral het vroege werk van Van Mieghem met figuren uit de voorstad, zwervers, havenscenes enz. Alle activiteiten werden zorgvuldig genoteerd, maar de waardevolle bron ging verloren in het bombardement van oktober 1914. ?De deelnemers hielden er stoutmoedige theorieen op na, maakten zich warm voor een nieuwe wereldorde en discussieerden over stelsels en levenshoudingen? De deuren ging wijd open voor concerten, tentoonstellingen en literair werk aangeboden aan een gevarieerd publiek van burgers tot dokwerkers. een Voordracht is gewoonlijk zoo droog als zemelen. Maar de voordrachten in de Kapel waren doorgaans geenkadreerd door muziek, zang en somwijlen schoone lichtbeelden? Kortom, de Kapel was destijds het brandpunt van alle intellektueel leven in Antwerpen ? en ik geloof ook niet dat er ooit in ?t zij gelijk welke vereniging, zooveel mannen van beteekenis zijn opgetreden.? De lijst van sprekers is indrukwekkend: August Vermeylen, Emile Verhaeren, Stijn Streuvels of Domela Nieuwenhuis? 'De Kapel' in Antwerpen was ruim een eeuw geleden een bijzondere verzamelplaats van anarchistische, Vlaamsgezinde en sociaalvoelende ideeen, waar onder meer Willem Elsschot en Eugeen Van Mieghem over de vloer kwamen 0 g.
