Alternatively known as the Gutenberg Bible (after its attributed printer), the 42-line Bible (from its column length on the page) and the Mazarin Bible (after the seventeenth-century French cardinal in whose library a particularly fine copy was housed), the original edition of this Latin Bible is the incunabulum of incunabula -- the first known book printed with moveable type in the Western world. It was published circa 1455 in the German city of Mainz in an edition of about 180 two-volume copies, of which only a few dozen remain. This large two-volume edition from 1985 contains a transcription of the original Latin text -- which was rendered in imitation of the dense, hand-copied manuscript of the day -- paired with an English translation. The first volume also includes a history of Johannes Gutenberg and his invention, and an examination of the 42-line Bible itself, while the second includes colour reproductions of pages of the Mazarin Bible, a bibliography and a map showing the location of extant copies.
