First edition, first impression, presentation copy, doubly inscribed on the half-title by the author and illustrator to natural historian Robert Lami, surrounded by two highly finished hand-coloured ink sketches by Bory depicting young explorers climbing trees and making studies of fish on the ocean floor. Heim, a mycologist and early proponent of biodiversity, was director of the French National Museum of Natural History from 1951 to 1965. His inscription to Lami reads: "à Robert Lami en souvenir du Cap Fréhel et autres lieux affectueusement R Heim". Bory's reads: "à M. R. Lami Hommages respectueux de la Dessinatrice M Bory". Small octavo (160 x 107 mm). Bound preserving the original pictorial front wrapper in dark green quarter morocco, spine lettered in gilt, raised bands, green marbled boards, green endpapers. With 23 illustrations by Michelle Bory. With 12-page publisher's catalogue at rear. Bookplate of Robert Lami to front pastedown. A fine copy, contents evenly browned. Seller Inventory # 141879
