About this Item
John Wiley & Sons. New York. 1966. 532 pages with index. First edition, first printing. Book is tight. Binding and hinges are strong and sound. Book is about fine with minor shelf-rubbing along edges. Original uncommon DJ with rubs along folds and a couple of tiny chips at foot and crown. DJ rear shows a transparent brown-tinited stain. Stain is not on rear panel, just on DJ rear. Previous owners' names on FFEP; one of them notably Edwin Taylor, American physicist and recipient of the Oersted Medalan, and former editor of the American Journal of Physics. Author Gregory Wannier studied under Ernst Stueckelberg and Eugene P. Wigner, and later worked with William B. Shockley, Conyers Herring, John Bardeen, Charles Kittel, and Philip W. Anderson, at Bell Labs. Wannier developed a complete set of orthogonal functions known as the Wannier functions which became tools of the trade for solid-state theorists. He also had made contributions to ferromagnetic theory via the Ising model. The Kramers?Wannier duality yields the exact location of the critical point for the Ising model on the square lattice. This offering is his now classic, that has gone through multiple printings, even some forty plus years later. This is the uncommon first edition, first printing in its rare DJ. NF/VG+.
