First edition, first impression, of Golding's first and best known novel, handsomely bound. Golding had great difficulties in finding a publisher, and even when he succeeded, the initial print run of 3,040 copies sold slowly. However, based on enthusiastic reviews and word of mouth, sales picked up, and the work is now regarded as one of the outstanding achievements of 20th-century British literature, a perennial choice in critics' lists of the greatest novels of all time. In 1955 The New Times recognized the book as "superbly written", and described it as "an allegory on human society today. with undertones of 1984 and High Wind in Jamaica, this brilliant work is a frightening parody of man's return to that state of darkness from which it took him thousands of years to emerge" (Stern). Gekoski & Grogan A2(a). James Stern, "English Schoolboys in the Jungle", The New York Times Book Review, 1955. Octavo (181 x 116 mm). Recent red morocco by Bayntun-Riviere, spine lettered in gilt, compartments and covers ruled in gilt, marbled endpapers, gilt edges. A fine copy. Seller Inventory # 164618
