About this Item
"It is a proven fact that the ores of the district go down at least 1,200 feet, and it is more than probable that they go down to unknown depths." [Text, verso] This uncommon promotional pamphlet was issued around 1920 to encourage investment in the Eureka Mining District of Nevada. Silver was first discovered at the site in 1864 and by the late 1870s, the boomtown of Eureka was the second-largest city in the state. Technology advancements in the early 20th century allowed for previously exhausted or flooded shafts to be re-opened and lead, zinc, silver, and gold were all extracted in modest quantities until the late 1950s. The primary map shows various mining claims across the Eureka District, with two properties - the Hamburg Mine and Uncle Sam's Consolidated Mining Company, outlined in bright red. Transportation routes and geographic features are also labeled and an inset of the town can be seen in the lower right. The verso presents a synopsis of the aforementioned mines, "two of the most active mines in the district", and flowery text describing the incredible growth and vast wealth of Eureka. Rare, with only one example located on microfiche at the UC Berkeley Libraries and one 2020 auction record." Sheet Width (in) 18.25 Sheet Height (in) 11.75 Condition Description Lightly toned along originally issued fold lines and along the outer edges of the sheet, but otherwise in near fine condition.
