It was at Saint- Tropez, during the summer of 1904, that Matisse, having met Signac, learned from him how to use pure colour with juxtaposed brushstrokes, as in this study for "Le Bonheur de vivre" ( Joy of Life). It was a technique he would soon abandon: from the following year, Matisse would devote himself to the explosion of Fauvist colours.
