Hosta

What is hosta?

Hostas are a popular garden plant. They thrive in shade and part-shade.Hosta is a clump-forming plant that grows from rhizomatous roots. It produces blooms on long stalks that extend well above the clumping foliage in late spring or summer. And hostas are extremely easy to care for and propagate.

About Hosta

Hosta plant grow from seed

Hosta seeds sprout nicely indoors, under normal house conditions, with temperatures running 60-70F. Use a "peaty" starter mix and just lightly cover the seed with peat moss. Keep the seed moist but not saturated until germination.

How to care hosta?

For the best care of hostas, plant them in rich organic soil with a slightly acidic pH.In spite of their almost tropical look, hostas are rugged and once established, they tolerate almost any soil and will grow for years. When discussing growing hostas, drainage is most important. When newly planted, keep the roots moist, not wet. Once established, hosta plants are very tolerant of summer drought.

Pruning

Some gardeners clip off the flower stalks when they appear, though other growers recognize the value of the white or purple flowers to bees and other pollinators. If you do allow the flowers to bloom, clip off the stalks after the flowers have faded.

Tip

  • Part shade to full shade
  • Evenly moist, organically rich, well-drained soil
  • Space 1 to 5 feet apart
  • Keep the soil moist but not wet
  • Proper feeding

Great Companions for Hosta

Coral bells

Tulips

Astilbes

Coral bells

Coral bells and hostas share similar growing condition preferences. The small flowers the coral bell produces are stunning and help make your shade garden more spectacular.

Tulips

In the spring the tulips will get lots of sun before the leaves fill in. Then the leaves fill in and it becomes a shady paradise for hostas. These colorful, low-maintenance perennial flowers make great companion plants for hostas.

Astilbes

Astilbes are another excellent addition to any shade garden. The flowers these lovely plants produce are stunning when paired with hostas, especially when interspersed with dwarf hostas in front of them and larger hostas behind them.
