However, I don't believe that any education pursuit is or should be a competitive endeavor. It's all about giving students and teachers quality choices, and Dan Britt has done this. He deserves serious props for Drumopedia.
I have already tried out a few of his approaches with my own students and they work wonders. Here are a few of his methods that stand out.
* The text and drum notation use a large font and are therefore super easy to read.
* The book does a great job of breaking down a drumming element (such as coordination) into the smallest possible kernel.
* Drumopedia is interspersed with recommended books for further study.
* Clever graphics serve to help bring home many of the concepts.
* The book is organized and sequenced in a very smart way with just the right amount of drumming knowledge to get you off to a good start.
Dan Britt brings a great deal of enthusiasm and passion to drum education. If you have a chance to buy his books, go to his workshops or take lessons from him, or watch him on Drum TvShow, do it! You won't be disappointed.
Other than that it is a sound introductory to set drumming. The lists of other books that it contains is also helpful.
One thing I appreciate is that Dan is very open about different grips, styles, etc. and doesn’t try to funnel the reader into one supposedly “correct” way to play. The book also calls out many other useful books by various authors, which can help you expand both your palate and your palette.
