Drumopedia has been named one of the 5 best beginner drum books by TakeLessons.com, the nation's largest online marketplace for lessons. It has been hailed "a must have for the forward-thinking drummer" by drumming innovator/great, Mike Clark (Herbie Hancock), and "one of the best, most useful and well-written drum instruction books in years" by NY veteran drum teacher, Rick Corwin. In the 23 chapter study beginner drum book by DrumTVShow Publications, Britt takes you one step at a time through basic notation, common stickings and rudiments, popular rock/pop beats and fills, double bass, fun patterns, and some funk, latin, ambidextrous and linear drumming!
Dan Britt has been hailed one of the most forward-thinking drummers and educators. After he "drew gasps of delight from the crowd" (Modern Drummer Magazine, 2009) at one of the world's top drum events, The Cape Breton Int'l Drum Fest, Britt dedicated the last year to creating the best possible drum book he can. Drumopedia
is the result.

Very comprehensive!

Very comprehensive!
As an early birthday gift, my best friend set me up with a drum pad, sticks, stand, the handbooks DrumOpedia and Rhythm 101, plus lessons with its author Dan Britt! I tried drums once, when I was 9 years old, and gave up when I found it too difficult. Now, at 51 years old (thinking I could never start learning to play drums at this age), I am amazing myself at how much I have learned in just 2 months! Drumopedia was written by Dan Britt (an experienced instructor and performer who was himself coached by legendaries Dom Famularo, Jim Chapin and Joe Morello), with Shahmir Kamalian, MD (who is also a drummer and classical pianist). Their combined knowledge of music and understanding of the mental and physical expectations by this instrument is reflected in every aspect of this handbook. It's language is easy to understand, the pace of learning steady and progressive. I think it's great and would highly recommend it to any beginner no matter what their age! Enjoy!

It may seem counterintuitive for the author of one beginning drum book (mine is called Drumcraft) to write a review about a book by a competing author. After all, we are trying to interest the same audience.

However, I don't believe that any education pursuit is or should be a competitive endeavor. It's all about giving students and teachers quality choices, and Dan Britt has done this. He deserves serious props for Drumopedia.

I have already tried out a few of his approaches with my own students and they work wonders. Here are a few of his methods that stand out.

* The text and drum notation use a large font and are therefore super easy to read.

* The book does a great job of breaking down a drumming element (such as coordination) into the smallest possible kernel.

* Drumopedia is interspersed with recommended books for further study.

* Clever graphics serve to help bring home many of the concepts.

* The book is organized and sequenced in a very smart way with just the right amount of drumming knowledge to get you off to a good start.

Dan Britt brings a great deal of enthusiasm and passion to drum education. If you have a chance to buy his books, go to his workshops or take lessons from him, or watch him on Drum TvShow, do it! You won't be disappointed.

Well-written, & easy to understand. Perfect for the beginner like me! I don't know enough about drumming to compare correct/incorrect methods, but from what I am reading, this appears to be the proper way to build speed and technique. The first few pages tell everything about how to read sheet music specifically for drums. If you already have some music/percussion experience, you can skip the first chapter and dive right into learning the rhythms and fills. This looks like it would help anyone who is just looking to improve. I think beginners and even moderately experienced drummers would benefit from this book. I like that it's not too wordy and complicated but explains everything in a simple and entertaining manner. My teenagers can read and understand it quite well also without getting bored as it's not overly "teachy" (yeah, I know that's not a word, spell check!)

I'm graduating college soon and my oldest brother wanted us to spend "quality" time together. He's been playing the drums for about 15 years and wants to teach me. He taught himself and he doesn't really know the fundamentals of drumming. So thankfully a teacher at my college plays the drums and he told me to get this book. I LOVE it! It's very easy to understand. Everything is broken down enough to the point where you can teach yourself. My brother and I are both learning!. I'm learning how to play while he's learning better warm ups. This is the perfect book if you are really just starting out. I hardly knew anything about drums before I started. I've been playing for a few months now and my brothers really happy about my progress.

With 'opedia' in the name, one would think this book would be more complete. It discusses jazz drumming only in passing and, worse, it doesn't help the student with drum rolls at all.

Other than that it is a sound introductory to set drumming. The lists of other books that it contains is also helpful.

This book is great for anyone beginning drums—and especially helpful if drums are your first instrument, as it teaches you the fundamentals of reading rhythm from sheet music.

One thing I appreciate is that Dan is very open about different grips, styles, etc. and doesn’t try to funnel the reader into one supposedly “correct” way to play. The book also calls out many other useful books by various authors, which can help you expand both your palate and your palette.

This was a gift for my brother for Christmas. He has been working towards teaching himself how to play drums by listening to music, but recently he has decided to take on learning to read the sheet music himself and this is the book he chose. Based on that, I will say that this item is very good.

The best beginner's drum book ever written and the most effective method a teacher can use as an introduction to drumset. Drumopedia is the white belt of drumming and a must have for teachers who want to retain their students!
