A New York Times bestseller

From Vice President-Elect Kamala Harris, one of America's most inspiring political leaders, a book about the core truths that unite us, and the long struggle to discern what those truths are and how best to act upon them, in her own life and across the life of our country

Vice President-Elect Kamala Harris's commitment to speaking truth is informed by her upbringing. The daughter of immigrants, she was raised in an Oakland, California community that cared deeply about social justice; her parents--an esteemed economist from Jamaica and an admired cancer researcher from India--met as activists in the civil rights movement when they were graduate students at Berkeley. Growing up, Harris herself never hid her passion for justice, and when she became a prosecutor out of law school, a deputy district attorney, she quickly established herself as one of the most innovative change agents in American law enforcement. She progressed rapidly to become the elected District Attorney for San Francisco, and then the chief law enforcement officer of the state of California as a whole. Known for bringing a voice to the voiceless, she took on the big banks during the foreclosure crisis, winning a historic settlement for California's working families. Her hallmarks were applying a holistic, data-driven approach to many of California's thorniest issues, always eschewing stale "tough on crime" rhetoric as presenting a series of false choices. Neither "tough" nor "soft" but
smart on crime became her mantra. Being smart means learning the truths that can make us better as a community, and supporting those truths with all our might. That has been the pole star that guided Harris to a transformational career as California’s attorney general, as a United States senator, and now as vice president-elect, grappling in every role with an array of complex issues, from health care and the new economy to immigration, national security, the opioid crisis, and accelerating inequality.

By reckoning with the big challenges we face together, drawing on the hard-won wisdom and insight from her own career and the work of those who have most inspired her, Kamala Harris offers in THE TRUTHS WE HOLD a master class in problem solving, in crisis management, and leadership in challenging times. Through the arc of her own life, on into the great work of our day, she communicates a vision of shared struggle, shared purpose, and shared values. In a book rich in many home truths, not least is that a relatively small number of people work very hard to convince a great many of us that we have less in common than we actually do, but it falls to us to look past them and get on with the good work of living our common truth. When we do, our shared effort will continue to sustain us and this great nation, now and in the years to come.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“Its most memorable moments are those personal touches: Harris’s recollections of family, friendships and, above all, of her late mother, an Indian immigrant and cancer researcher who raised Harris and her younger sister. . . . instructive for anyone trying to imagine a Vice President Harris.”
—
Carlos Lozada, The Washington Post

"A life story that genuinely entrances." —
Los Angeles Times

“An engaging read that provides insights into the influences of Harris’s life.” —
San Francisco Chronicle

“In an era when many of our current political memoirs are either looking back at the Obama years or are attempting to grapple with our current state of government unrest, it is exciting to see a highly respected and powerful woman of color and daughter of immigrants tell her own story and offer some hope for the future of our country.” — Bustle

About the Author

Kamala D. Harris is the Vice President of the United States of America. She began her career in the Alameda County District Attorney's Office, then was elected district attorney of San Francisco. As California's attorney general, Harris prosecuted transnational gangs, big banks, Big Oil, and for-profit colleges, and fought against attacks on the Affordable Care Act. She also fought to reduce elementary school truancy, pioneered the nation's first open data initiative to expose racial disparities in the criminal justice system, and implemented implicit bias training for police officers. The second Black woman ever elected to the U.S. Senate and the first female, first Black, and first Indian-American Vice President, Harris has worked to reform our criminal justice system, raise the minimum wage, make higher education tuition-free for the majority of Americans, and protect the legal rights of refugees and immigrants.

After reading this book, I have even more respect for Kamala Harris!! I knew a little about her before I read this book. In particular, I enjoyed reading about her relationship with her mother. Kamala Harris is a very smart & passionate person. Throughout her career, she has worked tremendously for those without a voice.

For our October pick in Between These Sheets book club, we decided to read Senator Kamala Harris’s book The Truths We Hold: An American Journey. We also used our book club meeting as an opportunity to rally the vote for the Biden/Harris campaign. The discussion we had in mid October, just a few weeks before the 2020 election, was engaging and exciting.

“When I was a little girl, my father wanted me to run free… I would take off, the wind in my face, with the feeling that I could do anything.”
Kamala Harris’s book offered great insights into her background and experiences that shape her views on America. She goes into great detail about her experiences serving as DA in San Francisco, as DA of California and during her first term as a United States Senator representing the state of California.

“I knew I was there for the victims. Both the victims of crimes committed and the victims of a broken criminal justice system. For me, to be a progressive prosecutor is to understand- and act on- this dichotomy… to look out for the overlooked, to speak up for those whose voices aren’t being heard, to see and address the causes of crime, not just their consequences, and to shine a light on the inequality and unfairness that lead to injustice.”
I really appreciated learning more about her personal journey. Ms. Harris used anecdotal stories from her lived experiences to better illustrate her points. This book was a relatable and easy read although it dealt with complex and important topics.

“I looked at him there, on one knee, and burst into tears. Mind you, these were not graceful Hollywood tears streaming down a glistening cheek. No, I’m talking about snorting and grunting, with mascara smudging my face.“
There were times that I felt Ms. Harris was not comfortable opening up about herself so personally. I was OK with this since I appreciated her serious tone and occasional personal story. I thought the book came together very nicely and is more important than ever.

“I talked about women’s issues, at least what I see as women’s issues: the economy, national security, health care, education, criminal justice reform, climate change.”
I eagerly await Kamala Harris being sworn into the office of Vice President in a few weeks.

“The American people have not given up on the American Dream. I know this to be true. But when you can’t sleep at night, how can you dream?”

I have just finished reading this wonderful memoir written by then Senator Kamala Harris. It begins with memories of her childhood, and takes the reader through the years she spent as an aspiring prosecuting attorney, district attorney, and the attorney general of California. There needs to be a sequel to enlighten us further about her days as a senator, presidential candidate, and finally as Joe Biden's running mate and vice-president-to-be. I especially appreciated her memories of the life-altering and mind-shaping events of her early career, the heartbreaking experiences she had trying to help sexually exploited teens, Californians faced with losing their homes and being cheated by big banks, and young people trying to overcome drug addiction and to start a new and much happier life. Kamala Harris talks at length about her convictions, which have evolved partially because of her Christian faith, and the truths she has learned from others and her experiences in life. Hence, the title of the book. She speaks of her travels to Israel, and her admiration for Israeli innovation and technological advances, especially in the field of water desalination. I recommend this book highly. Something so helpful, straightforward, and completely open deserves more than five stars.

Kamala Harris has pulled together a very readable and valuable book about her growing up and professional lives. We get a good insight into her personal world as she shares stories about her parents and other family members, with many enjoyable photos. Lots about her years in multiple offices leading up to her current one as a member of the U. S. Senate, and candidate for U.S. VP in the upcoming election. She describes important issues she's faced with her teams, with many successes (and some frustrations), again with many interesting photos. I took many notes and plan to visit her book again -- it's that valuable.

This book arrived on my porch this morning. I haven’t stopped reading it. The book reads like Kamala talks, except it has a tender underbelly that I haven’t heard from her before.
It tells her life story. She comes from parents who protested civil rights. She is herself a civil rights leader. She comes from a working class family. Excellent story telling. One thing I know for sure is she knows what truth and justice for all means.
I hope she runs for President. She would be the breath of fresh air we all need.
Excellent read. Read it. Believe it. There is hope in every page. I’m a believer now.

If you only consume typical American media, you probably don’t know much about Vice President Kamala Harris aside from her supposedly low approval ratings. My advice: read this book, which the LA Times calls “a life story that genuinely entrances.” Don’t let the resentful sourpusses on Fox News poison your outlook about this great American woman, a compassionate trailblazer who throughout her life has put people first. And while you’re at it, don’t let the left wingers try to tell you she’s a “cop” or a overzealous former prosecutor. This is seriously the best three dollars and ninety-eight cents I ever spent — on Amazon or anywhere else.
