  • Text that has been proofread to avoid errors common in other versions.
  • A beautiful cover that replicates the first edition cover.
  • The complete text in an easy-to-read font similar to the original.
  • Properly formatted text complete with correct indenting, spacing, footnotes, italics, and tables.

First published in French as Vingt mille lieues sous les mers in periodicals in 1870 and the first English version in 1872. It is still considered one of Verne's greatest works as well as one of the earliest science fiction novels. It describes the journey around the world of Captain Nemo and his submarine, the Nautilus, which had been thought a giant monster when first spotted. The description of the Nautilus was considered ahead of its time, as it accurately describes features on submarines, which at the time were primitive vessels. The 20,000 leagues referred to in the title is the distance traveled around the world and not the depth and is equal to more than 50,000 miles. The correct title ends with 'Seas' and not the singular 'Sea'.

Brilliant story with great illustrations!

Brilliant story with great illustrations!
This is a timeless, classic novel. Although I rarely read fiction novels, I'm glad that I read this book. Most of us know the basics of the story, so I'll discuss this version of the book. The cover draws people in when they see it at work. This version has 110 illustrations reproduced from the first few editions. Jules Verne is clearly fascinated by a new (to him) invention, electricity. The author has an amazing knowledge of marine life, geography and science. He also has the ability to tell an outrageous story and make it seem real.

Jules Verne was a man beyond his time and so was Captian Nemo. Reading this book was like exploring the very depths of the ocean and his mind. This is a journey I will certain come back to again and again.

Love this version. Feels like it should cost more than it does, and of course the story itself is an absolute classic. I had forgotten how great it actually was! Recommended.

Too much technical information for me to enjoy this book. Wanted to know more about Nemo and why he was so angry.
