Description

Tillandsia brachycaulos "abdida" is apparently a form of T. brachycaulos that was once traded as Tillandsia abdita, but this name denotes another species from Costa Rica. Tillandsia brachycaulos is a wonderful species native to the humid tropics from Mexico to Panama as well as Venezuela, growing as an epiphyte on trees. It was described in 1845 by Diederich Franz Leonhard von Schlechtendal, who named it after its short inflorescence (brachycaulos: short-stemmed). It is also known under the names T. bradeana, T. cryptantha and T. flammea, the latter name because of its property of turning its leaves from a shade of green to an intense red when exposed to sufficient sunlight.

T. brachycaulos "abdida" belongs to the green or rainforest Tillandsias that prefer a more humid environment than the so-called grey Tillandsias. Nevertheless, it is an "air plant" that can absorb water and nutrients entirely via absorbent scales on the leaves. The roots serve mainly as adhesive roots. The plant can be attached to a solid base such as wood or stone. It prefers regular humidification and grows best in a bright to semi-shaded area, in daylight cultivation without direct sunlight. Watering can be done by dipping as well as by misting. After watering, the plant should be allowed to dry off. Optimally, an orchid and Tillandsia fertiliser is added every second watering during spring and summer.
After flowering, the mother plant begins to form small offspring. These can be separated carefully from a size of about one third of the mother rosette. If they are not separated, they grow together to form a larger clump.

T. brachycaulos "abdida" can be integrated wonderfully into larger rainforest terrariums. It can be cultivated especially well on branches or in rock crevices. When flowering occurs, several violet coloured flowers often appear.
