Joseph Pauwels was born December 16, 1903 in Sleydinge, Belgium. Like most artists of his generation, Pauwels received academic training in Paris and absorbed the theories and techniques of the French Impressionists.

His vibrant pastel color palette and loose brushwork reflect the Impressionists' interest in the study of light and color and was likely painted "en plein aire" or outdoors on location. He was a successful artist of the pre and post WWII era.

He exhibited widely in Paris, Brussels and Amsterdam. His paintings are represented at Le Musee de Gand, Belgium.

Pauwels died on March 12, 1983.
