SUGGESTIONS FOR REDUCING THE PERCEPTION OF TINNITUS

  • Monitor Caffeine, Salt, Alcohol and Aspirin intake. Offset these with increased hydration if you have a particularly high intake due to holidays, travel, eating out etc. Consider making a journal to compare your intake and the resultant level of your Tinnitus.
  • Manage stress. Do active techniques to reduce your stress including exercise, massage, relaxation techniques, music listening, walking, visiting a friend, or whatever activity works best for you. High stress levels are known triggers of increased Tinnitus.
  • Protect your ears from noise. Use earplugs at concerts, while vacuuming or using a blow dryer, and use sound protecting earmuffs for loud yard work such as a leaf blower, snow blower or gas mower. Loud noise will worsen how much you notice the Tinnitus both temporarily AND permanently if you do further hearing damage.
  • Monitor your sleep habits. Try to implement good sleep hygiene to get a good night sleep. Your sleep will impact how much you notice the Tinnitus. Custom sleep or over the counter sleep earplugs are available through us if you have difficulty sleeping duento noise distractions such as your partner’s snoring. *Caution-some people find the intense ‘quiet’ from the earplugs enhances how much they notice their Tinnitus.
  • Consider using a sound soother at night to distract your brain from your Tinnitus. Visit www.deafandhearalberta.ca to see equipment options that you can purchase to help with this. Pillow speakers allow you to listen to music or soothing sounds without distracting your spouse. Apps are also available for your smartphone that can produce soft level relaxing sounds for a specified amount of time before you go to sleep.
  • Improve your hearing with hearing aids if recommended. Consistent use of hearing aids can help your brain focus in on external and environmental sounds vs. the internal ones produced by your Tinnitus.
