Basics of Soldering & THT Training

AVLE Soldering License Module 1

The first and most important module of the training for soldering technology specialists in accordance with guideline AVLE1510 teaches all the essential basics of soldering technology in electronics and consolidates this knowledge by soldering wired components on printed circuit boards. The participant learns the relationships between the printed circuit board, components and soldering process and thus acquires a sound knowledge of the process and the process windows for manual soldering with a soldering iron.

Knowledge covered in Module 1:

  • All the important basics about soldering in electronics
  • Workplace and environmental conditions
  • Occupational safety, hazardous substances, RoHS, handling of assemblies and ESD safety
  • Solders, fluxes, cleaning media
  • Overview of hand soldering tools and aids
  • Process parameters of hand soldering stations (temperatures, contact times, soldering tips)
  • Basic rules for contact soldering using soldering irons
  • Correct handling of hand soldering irons, soldering tip care, tip service life
  • Basic material properties, process window of printed circuit boards and components
  • Top list of hand soldering problems, risk of damage to assemblies
  • Basic acceptance criteria for THT solder joints in accordance with IPC-A-610
  • Component knowledge THT components, printed circuit boards
  • Soldering and desoldering THT components on training circuit boards
  • Tinning (solder bath) and soldering of stranded wires
  • Independent visual inspection of solder joints

Training duration:

  • Three days (27 teaching units, including exam)

Included:

  • Printed personal training documents
  • Training material for practical soldering exercises
  • Examination materials
  • AVLE qualification certificate module 1 after passing the final exam in theory and practice.
  • AVLE soldering license or entry of the completed module

Module 1 provides the basic knowledge required for participation in modules 2–4.

Entry requirements:

  • Participants should be able to understand the language of instruction in order to follow the lessons and take the examination.
  • Participants should be used to working independently and on their own responsibility.
  • In your own interest, we recommend that you have your eyesight checked by means of an eye test before starting the course. Please bring any necessary visual aids with you.

Note for participants with existing soldering experience:

Despite existing knowledge, participation in Module 1 is recommended, as it fills any gaps in theoretical and practical knowledge. Experience has shown that most soldering specialists make unconscious mistakes over time, which can be corrected in the course of the training.

The basics are deliberately linked to the more difficult soldering of plated through-hole assemblies, as this is the best way to illustrate manual soldering. It is therefore advisable to take part in Module 1 even if the participant will later be working mainly in the SMT area.

In the following modules, the very important basic topics are no longer covered.

Recertification

  • The validity of the AVLE qualification certificates in modules 1–4 is three years from the date of the examination.
  • Modules 1–3 are considered together; the expiration date of the last module completed counts.
  • An extension of a further three years can be achieved by joint recertification or by completing a further module of modules 1–3 for the first time, if not already available.
  • The recertification examination must be completed no later than 90 days after the expiration date, otherwise the qualification certificates expire and must be reacquired.
