Francis Irenee duPont

Francis I. duPont, of Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, died peacefully in his home above his beloved Brandywine on Thursday, July 21 at the age of 95.

Francis (also known as Nick) was born in Buffalo, New York in 1926, the oldest son of Emile F. duPont and Sarah Duer Townsend. Throughout his life, he enjoyed enduring friendships with duPont and Townsend cousins almost too numerous to count.  After his early years in Buffalo and Richmond, Virginia where his father was a supervisor at DuPont Company plants, the family returned to Wilmington in the late 1930s where Francis lived for almost all of his life. He attended Friends School in Wilmington and graduated from Kent School in Kent, Connecticut in the class of 1945, though he enlisted in the U.S. Navy after his junior year and served from December 1944 to July 1946 before going on inactive reserve status. He graduated from Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut in 1950 and was called back to active duty during the Korean War, serving as cargo officer on naval vessels in the Caribbean and North Atlantic.

After his naval service, Francis began a career with the DuPont Company, moving to Kinston, North Carolina where he worked as a supervisor in a DuPont Dacron plant. He returned to Wilmington in 1957 to join fiber product sales at DuPont and worked there until 1967 when he joined the Photo Products Division in Chicago. He returned to Wilmington again in 1969 to join cousin E.I. (Brud) duPont and Richard V. King at Delfi Management, where Francis worked in marketing and sold the firm’s Sigma mutual fund investments. He retired from Delfi in 1975 and devoted himself to conservation, charitable and historical endeavors for the rest of his life.

Francis was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting, fishing, boating and camping, and pursued a lifelong passion for gardening and beekeeping. He was a member of the Philadelphia Society for the Promotion of Agriculture for many years. These interests led him to join with George A. (Frolic) Weymouth and William Prickett in the founding of the Brandywine Conservancy, which now holds more than 480 conservation easements and has protected more than 64,500 acres from development in Chester and Delaware Counties, Pennsylvania and in New Castle County, Delaware.

Francis played a major role in the development and construction of the Kalmar Nyckel, Delaware’s replica of the ship that Peter Minuit sailed across the Atlantic in 1638 bringing settlers from northern Europe to found New Sweden on the Christina River. For more than a decade the work of fundraising and organizing, and eventually launching this ship was his principal focus. He made lasting friendships with many enthusiastic partners in this ongoing project.

Francis also worked as a volunteer for years in the DuPont family residence gardens at Hagley and at Longwood Gardens, bringing together his lifelong love of the plants and soil of the Brandywine Valley and the institutions his family established and nurtured for all to enjoy.

Francis was well known for his deep and steadfast Christian faith. He taught Sunday School at Christ Church for many years, participated regularly in several bible study groups and was a longtime supporter of charitable organizations such as Urban Promise and the Ministry of Caring.

He is survived by his brother, Peter R. duPont and his wife Jeanie of New York, NY; five children from his first marriage to Rosamond L. duPont, who predeceased him in 2021: Augustus I. duPont and his wife Jill of Greenwich, CT and Chilmark, MA; Emile F. duPont and his wife Lindsay of Hastings-on-Hudson, NY; Maria S. duPont and her husband Bob Penneys of Chadds Ford, PA; Sophie G. duPont of Broomall, PA; and Louis R. duPont and his wife Ellen Spring of Starksboro, VT; three children of his second wife Elizabeth B. duPont, who predeceased him in 2009: Robert B. Swezey and his wife Kellie of Valrico, FL; Duncan F. Swezey and his wife Laura of Ambler, PA; and Dan H. Swezey of Wilmington, DE; 14 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

There will be a celebration of life in memory of Francis at Christ Church, Greenville, Delaware on Friday, September 23, 2022 at 11:00 a.m., followed by a reception in the Parish Hall. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Brandywine Conservancy, Kalmar Nyckel Foundation, Urban Promise or the Ministry of Caring.

I wanted to take this opportunity to give my condolence to the duPont family in their time of loss. I met Nick many years ago as a therapist for Delaware Curative. Nick knew I loved gardening and gave my husband Joe and I a private tour of his grandmother's house at Hagley Museum and introduced us to Peter the horticulturist for the estate at that time. Nick was a kind sole, and he will be truly missed. Rest peacefully my friend.

My sincerest condolences to family and friends at the passing of this wonderful gentleman. Nick (as I knew him) was an ardent supporter of farmland preservation in the region and would often stop by my office to discuss programs and strategies to increase the conservation of all our natural resources. He was also a faithful supporter of the Philadelphia Society for Promoting Agriculture and was often in attendance at meetings and field trips adding valuable insights and questions to the lively discussions. Finally, he was a good friend and we often shared lunch together talking about his many interests. I especially enjoyed meeting Nick at the Hotel DuPont where the staff always brought him his favorite cookies as soon as he sat down! Nick, I will miss you and may you Rest In Peace

Nick, you were a kind and caring friend, always circling back thoughtfully, sharing interests and enthusiasms for the three or four ways we got thrown together over the years. As a young man I felt your encouragement for my fledgling charitable efforts, driving around together to make arrangements for fundraisers. Many happy lunches together, sharing family time with my in-laws, your genuine concern for our well-being as a family, welcoming us into your home, passing along Jerusalem artichoke root (that eventually took us years to extirpate, but thank you anyway!), and always ready for a good laugh. It took my friend Richard to point it out, but most of all I will miss never again hearing your wonderful voice. You made much of what life gave you, and will always be on my personal Board of Directors. Our condolences to your family.

To the du Pont family from the Ministry of Caring 'family': Our sympathy and prayers are with you during this very sad time. May your wonderful memories of joyful times with Nick bring you comfort and may God's love give you peace. Thank you for remembering Nick's life of family and service to his country and his community by caring for the poorest among us as he did. We were grateful to have his support and his advocacy. We were indeed honored to share with Nick the portrait of his ancestor, Alexis I. du Pont, that we commissioned to place in the Village of St. John. May Nick now rest in God's peace. Psalm 73:26 "My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever."

I was Francis’ care giver for the past 3 years. He was such a wonderful, joyful, and kind soul. He was so proud of his family legacy and of all of his children. Francis taught me to be gracious and helpful to those around us. He once said to me “ There are two important things to me in my life ….. my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ , and my family and friends. That sums him up perfectly. I love you Francis, and thank you so much for sharing your life with me. I will see you again in heaven.

Dear Cousins Gus, Frank, Maria, Sophie, and Louis, I was so sorry to hear of Uncle Nicky's passing the other day. I am sure he is somewhere in heaven reunited with our father and many, many others. When my dad died just over 11 years ago, Nicky said to me, "The end of an era!". I thought what a nice thing to say, but after reading Nicky's obituary I think it could apply to him as well. He lived a long and very eventful life. I have many memories of him and your whole family at the house over by Tower Hill School. What a wonderful time we had with sleepovers, games of hide and seek, and I seem to remember one game where we all just piled up on top of one another in the main hallway. I remember seeing the mail addressed to F.I. duPont and thinking, who the heck is that? At such a young age I only knew him as Uncle Nicky. And we can never forget the French woman who took care of all you kids. I think her name was Mrs. Boutier, but I am sure I have spelled it wrong. Then there was the many memorable 4th of July parties out around the pond in PA. So many good times and memories. Whenever we visited Wilmington there was usually a trip out to see Uncle Nicky. The next time we are in Wilmington I plan to go and visit his grave. Please know that my husband and I are thinking of all of you at this very difficult time. Love, Bunny (Bispham) and Ben Loveless

Dear Cousins Maria, Gus, Frank, Louie, and Sophie, My siblings and I wish to offer our deepest condolences for the loss of your devoted father, Francis (Nick). I was heartened to know that dear cousin Francis died “peacefully at home, above his beloved Brandywine,” as your obituary so appropriately said. What a beautiful remembrance this obituary is! I can only imagine how my grandparents, Edmond and Averell, will greet him in his heavenly realm. And, I can’t help but remember the good family times we always had congregating at Chadds Ford. Francis always embraced all of us with open arms. Our hearts go out to you. A.C., Ed, and Melinda join me in sending lots of love, Your cousin, Diana du Pont

    Catherine Page Raphael writes,
I have just discovered that my old friend from Delfi American Corporation has gone to heaven over a year ago - and I am so sad in one way and happy in another, as anyone who knew Nick certainly knows where he is now and that he is having a wonderful time with our Lord and so many of his family and friends. What a wonderful happy spirit Nick had - and I enjoyed seeing and conversing with him at my work (where I was a secretary) and also at the Kalmar Nyckel Foundation affairs. I last spoke with him when his beloved Betsy died, and he was happy then to be with his children and other relatives - but not looking forward to their departure. He certainly personified "the joy of the Lord" - and I was always happy and proud to be counted as one of his friends.
