Beautiful long spikes on long stalks of numerous whorls of purple-blue flowers. An excellent cut flower but a bold plant for the border as well. 3ft (90cm)

From China, Japan and, of course, Korea, where it is found on mountains in grassy places along streams, comes this erect, aromatic perennial bearing from June to September densely many-flowered spikes. The leaves with an anise-like odour and flavour, are much prized for use in flavouring, seasoning meats and sauces and for tea. A true perennial, but flowering in as little as 10 weeks or so from seed.

    Lovely

    Reviewed by Lynn on

Sewed seed in March, very slow to produce 1cm seedling but managed to get half a dozen to grow on once I took them out of the tray of water. They have just finished flowering but are lovely plants. Very happy.

Thank you for your review. We would recommend to water from the base, but only to keep the soil moist for germination to occur, water does not need to be constant. We are pleased to hear you have successfully grown these lovely plants and as they are perennials will be rewarding you with flowers again next year. All the best, The Chiltern Seeds Team.

    Germination Instructions

Sow indoors. Sow onto moist well-drained seed compost. Press seeds lightly into the soil but do not cover. Light is needed for germination. Propagate 18-20°C. Germination 14-28 days, but can be irregular and take up to 90 days. Water only from the base. Once germination begins admit air to prevent damping off. Once seedlings are large enough to handle transplant to 8cm pots. Acclimatise and plant out after danger of frost has passed with 45cm spacing. Can be sown directly in spring into well prepared soil that has had 5cm of gravel and 10cm of compost added and mixed to 30cm depth.

    Growing Instructions

Prefers full sun in any soil type that is free draining. Needs little attention. Water every week or two. May require staking in exposed conditions.

    Cultivation Instructions

Cut back spent flowers to encourage a longer flowering window. This is a short lived perennial. This will self-seed but not freely so collect some seed for future sowings.
