Mahler, Symphony no. 7: deFilharmonie

Over het evenement

As part of the deFilharmonie concert series, the deFilharmonie presents Gustav Mahler's "Symphony no. 7" under the baton of Edo de Waart at the Centre for Fine Arts.

About the concert series
Once again the Royal Flemish Philharmonic (deFilharmonie) has chosen a Dutchman to be its Chief Conductor: Edo de Waart, a musician with an outstanding record.

"I was looking to counterbalance the music of Mozart and Mendelssohn that Philippe [Herreweghe] is performing," explains De Waart. "We are a large symphony orchestra, so we must also play the symphonic repertoire of the late 19th century and the 20th century. Mahler, Bartók, and Elgar are truly important composers." On the choice of soloists, he adds: "I have worked with Truls Mork, who will play the Shostakovich Cello Concerto, with pleasure a number of times. He is perhaps the specialist of the moment, a great master."  But the season also includes some less familiar names. "Our new leader (concertmaster) Bart Van den Bogaerde was keen to play Korngold. I love having our own people as soloists and I am really delighted he has not opted for Bruch, but is offering something different for a change." Edo de Waart and his orchestra feel welcome at the Centre for Fine Arts: "I believe anything is possible in this concert hall. I hope our close friendship continues!" A friendship that will be confirmed once more in the course of this concert season.
