Rolex 1680 Vintage Ad

The Rolex Submariner ref. 1680 is a stunning classic. First introduced in 1969, the ref. 1680 includes the date, unlike previous Submariners (ie. Ref. 5512 and 5513). The infamous Red Submariner is also a ref. 1680 which has the word "Submariner" in red lettering and was produced by Rolex from 1969-1975.

The Mk. V Red Submariner dial differentiates itself with the following details of the text located above the 6 o'clock – Most importantly the red text of the Mk V is applied directly to the dial, whereas previous versions also featured white text beneath, and the red text printed on top. The "6's" of the depth rating remain open similar to the previous dial variant, however, the opening in the Mk. V is far smaller and often referred to as "almost closed".

CASE & BRACELET

The excellent case retains symmetrical and full lugs that have seen gentle polishing in the past and retain prominent chamfers while exhibiting honest signs of previous use. The original Mk. III "fat font" bezel insert features an attractive, yet subtle fade to a navy blue/dark grey color, and shows light signs of use, namely the original tritium pearl is mostly present though the top portion is missing. The original Rolex 9315 folded-link Oyster bracelet with 380 end pieces retains 11 links that show light stretch for the style and age of the bracelet and will fit up to a 7 3/4-inch wrist.

DIAL & HANDS

The original Mk. V Red Submariner dial is in truly exceptional, near-perfect condition. The only element of age present on the dial is some nominal clipping to the very edge of the white minute track which is extremely common and expected in Red Submariner dials of this era. Otherwise, the dial shows no actual damage or age. The tritium lume plots have achieved a charming creamy yellow patina with no degradation present when inspected under UV light. The original tritium hands match the dial perfectly and show no degradation when inspected under UV light. The metallic date wheel is original with "open" 6's and 9's.
