Montreal’s industrial parks by Lewis Baltz
Architecture, landscape and photography are the three keys to the work of Californian artist Lewis Baltz. A prominent figure in the “New Topographics” art movement, Baltz is interested in architecture, the changing American landscape, and the contrast between nature and culture. On show at the Canadian Centre for Architecture in Montreal are 51 images from the monographic series developed by him in the 1970s and titled “The New Industrial Parks near Irvine, California”.
By lining up the rows of closed doors and enigmatic facades that abound in today’s industrial landscapes, Baltz creates opaque and transparent surfaces and textures of delicate beauty.
On Thursday 16 May at 7 pm, the artist will be present at the Centre to talk about his work with the curator of the CCA photographic collection, Hubertus von Amelunxen.
