Pierre DuMont

ARRIVÉ EN 1696

This wine range pays tribute to Pierre DuMont and his fellow pioneering French Huguenots, who greatly influenced the future of winemaking in South Africa. Pierre DuMont from Calais arrived in the Cape Colony as early as 1696.

DuMont first settled at De Paarl Diamant in the Drakenstein area, from where he moved to De Zoete Inval with his wife Cecilia d’Atis who is said to be one of the first female winemakers of South Africa. It is noted in historical documents that by the year 1712, Pierre and Cecilia were the proud owners of three horses, 100 cattle, 450 sheep and 13,000 vines.

The DuMont name is traced back to Burgundian Aristocrats, once home to the Dukes of Burgundy who were among the most wealthiest and powerful princes in Europe. As records show, the first notations of the DuMont Family name appeared in the 1300/1400s. Seven centuries later, we’ve crafted a special red blend made of the three most popular French varietals in South Africa (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz) to celebrate the origin of DuMont and further more produce the 3 most popular French white varietals in South Africa (Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc and Chardonnay) under the Pierre DuMont range.
