C'est ce que nous apprennent les traites de fauconnerie, manuels et receptaires rediges d'abord en latin, dont est fournie ici une mise en commun des donnees. Les traites latins, encore en grande partie inedits, sont presentes dans un premier chapitre, tandis que les trois suivants analysent de facon critique les informations qu'ils livrent concernant les oiseaux, les techniques d'apprivoisement et de chasse, la therapeutique. Elles sont confrontees a des emplois du motif de la chasse au vol dans la litterature et l'iconographie du Moyen Age tardif, et une vingtaine d'illustrations completent le propos. A travers les textes qui ont consigne leur savoir, du moins en partie, on mesure combien les fauconniers occidentaux ont ete de fins connaisseurs de la gent ailee, et des therapeutes attentifs cherchant a appliquer aux precieux oiseaux de chasse les descriptions et les methodes de la medecine humaine. Cette premiere evaluation synthetique du contenu des traites de fauconnerie latins interessera l'historien des sciences et des techniques, le philologue et le specialiste de l'iconographie, mais aussi le chasseur et l'amateur d'oiseaux.
